BMW: 'The Combustion Engine Is Our Foundation'
Many carmakers rushed to set cutoff dates for combustion engines, only to backtrack on their lofty electric goals just a few years later. But BMW didn't break any promises for the simple reason that it never announced an end to gas-powered cars. On several occasions, CEO Oliver Zipse emphasized that the switch to electric shouldn't be forced and that consumers should have the freedom to choose, citing high EV prices and an underdeveloped charging infrastructure. In a new interview with the German business newspaper Automobilwoche (subscription required) , a senior BMW official stated, 'The combustion engine is our foundation and will also finance our future business.' Klaus von Moltke is the plant manager at BMW's Steyr factory in Austria, where 1.2 million engines were built last year. He added that the development of conventional powertrains will continue. Von Moltke stated that the company is testing various fuels compatible with internal combustion engines, including HVO100, for diesel-powered cars. The abbreviation stands for 'hydrotreated vegetable oil,' and '100' indicates it's a pure, unblended fuel. BMW is already filling up diesel cars made in Germany with HVO100 before shipping them to dealers. The company claims CO₂ emissions are reduced by as much as 90% compared to conventional diesel. In addition to environmental benefits, diesel engines running on HVO100 are said to perform better during cold starts and are less prone to microbial contamination due to the fuel's purity. Beyond combustion engines, BMW's Steyr factory in Upper Austria is also producing 'electric engines' for future Neue Klasse EVs. Reaching 50% in just five years is ambitious, given that EVs accounted for only 17.4% of total BMW Group sales (including Mini and Rolls-Royce) last year. In the first quarter of 2025, EVs made up nearly 19% of shipments, so the company must feel pretty confident it can reach parity by 2030. Asked whether the European Union will follow through on its plan to ban sales of new combustion-engine cars by 2035 , Klaus von Moltke replied: 'It's not our job to make such assumptions; that's pointless. Our job is to consider all possible scenarios, prepare for each one, and ensure our delivery capability.' BMW is keeping all options open and has not yet fully committed its resources to EVs. It remains invested in combustion engines and has already confirmed a new gasoline-powered M3 with an inline-six is in development, likely with some form of electrification. The larger M5 hasn't lost any cylinders either, as its V-8 is now part of a plug-in hybrid setup to meet increasingly strict emissions standards. Next BMW X7 spotted with Neue Klasse styling
BMW's largest SUV, the X7, is set to make a return in 2026, the second-generation model spotted testing on European roads. Prior to that the Neue Klasse line-up will launch, kicking off with the new iX3 due out later this year. As with the new X5, due out in 2026, the X7 also borrows styling from the Neue Klasse line-up. From the look of the camouflaged test vehicle, BMW's biggest SUV will have seven-seat capacity again. This ensures it rivals the upcoming GLS and full-sized Range Rover. Read our review of BMW's 2023 X7. Up front is a split headlight design, as on the current vehicle, and a vertical kidney grille arrangement. Whether it merges into the headlights, like other Neue Klasse models, is unclear. At the rear is a quad-tip exhaust system, indicating it is an M50 or M60 variant, and a roof-end spoiler. It is thought that the new X7 will use an overhauled version of the firm's existing Cluster Architecture (CLAR). This can incorporate both ICE and electric powertrains. Whether the latter comes to pass is unclear, but the iX7 name is a BMW trademark. And the company is currently creating EV variants of its core models. The Neue Klasse programme includes an iX3, an 'i3' (3 Series) and an electric 'i1' 1 Series at some point. Electric components for the iX7 could be borrowed from the i7. That has a 106kWh battery with three different motor outputs, ranging from 335kW (single motor) to 485kW (dual motor). Given the X7 is an SUV, expect only the dual-motor all-wheel drive variants.

Moreover, the SUV will get the 'intelligent charging flap' that will automatically open when the vehicle senses the owner is intending to charge. The SUV will also shut off by itself when the charger is removed. Moreover, the car gets AI integration, which enables it to learn when to open the port based on the location and the owner's preference. The new-gen BMW iX3 will also support bi-directional charging, including Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) up to 3.7 kW, and Vehicle-to-Grid via a new bi-directional 19.2 kW DC wallbox charger. New-gen BMW iX3: New Tech The new iX3 will get a host of tech upgrades and will be one of the most advanced SUVs to come from BMW. The model is confirmed to arrive with a panoramic display at the base of the windshield, a 3D head-up display (HUD), a new generation central display with Matrix lighting technology, and an all-new steering wheel with illuminated, touch-sensitive buttons. The new panoramic iDrive will run the latest BMW Operating System X. On the safety front, the SUV will come with the ADAS stack of electronic aids, including lane change warning, road priority warning and safe exit, which will warn drivers of vehicles approaching alongside the car. The new BMW iX3 will come with a host of advanced driver assistance systems, and sport a completely new design for the exterior and interior BMW has also revealed the next-gen iX3 will get the 'Dynamic Performance Control' software stack, which will be able to process information ten times faster than the previous systems and promises to respond more directly to the driver's command. The automaker says this will be crucial to powertrain, brakes, recuperation and sub-functions of the steering system. The model will also feature the new 'Symbiotic driver assistance' system, which will be able to retain the self-driving systems, despite manual user inputs like acceleration or braking.
