Racer who struck pregnant woman, killing baby, sent to jail
File image. Photo: 123RF A man whose vehicle struck a pregnant woman at an illegal street racing event, killing her unborn child, has been jailed. The tragic incident took place at the intersection of Bruce Roderick and Offenhauser Drives in East Tamaki, Auckland, on 19 May 2023. Police said the 24-year-old man could not be named for legal reasons. He was sentenced on Wednesday to two years and four months' imprisonment for manslaughter, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified. He was also disqualified from driving for another 12 months. "The events of that night were a tragedy for everyone concerned," Detective Senior Sergeant Dean Batey said. The woman was a spectator, and was seriously injured and had to undergo emergency surgery. "Her young baby sustained such catastrophic injuries that she barely even stood a chance at life and did not survive the day," Batey said. The driver was 22 at the time. Police said they would "continue to carry out disruptive and enforcement activities in response to anti-social behaviour on our roads". "A lot of this behaviour ends up as merely a momentary rush of glory on social media or amongst peers," Batey said. "The reality is that the driving taking place on public roads is putting participants, spectators and innocent members of the public at real risk. "I put this question to those taking part: Is a life really worth it?" Sign up for Ngā Pitopito Kōrero, a daily newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.

Fresh warnings over car meets blighting Alderley Edge as police urge 'think again'
Fresh warnings have been issued over car meets blighting Alderley Edge with police urging those participating to 'think again'. It was earlier this year that launched a crackdown on illegal car meets following a number of unauthorised events in Wilmslow, Macclesfield and Alderley Edge, where high-powered vehicles had been 'drag' racing. Hundreds of people are known to usually attend the events in some of Cheshire most affluent areas - but they have previously sparked concern from residents because of the noise of revving engines and parking, with cars mounted pavements, roundabouts and grass verges. It has not been approved by the local authority or Cheshire Police. A dispersal order was put in place across Alderley Edge in March this year, to crack down on the drivers causing a nuisance in the area and potential anti-social behaviour. And senior officers previously told the M.E.N that some motorists involved in car meets across Cheshire and Greater Manchester were 'playing up' and performing dangerous stunts 'for likes on social media'. "Previous events have attracted hundreds of people, many in high powered motor vehicles driving dangerously causing excessive noise and anti-social behaviour, all of which have caused alarm and distress to local residents," a Cheshire Police spokesperson said. Issuing a warning, Chief Inspector Zoe Bowden, head of Macclesfield Local Policing Unit, said: 'We are aware of reports circulating on social media regarding a potential car meet in Alderley Edge this weekend and I would urge anyone planning to attend to think again. 'The event has not been authorised by ourselves, or Cheshire East Council, and therefore it will be classed as an illegal car meet. 'Patrols will be stepped up across the area and robust action against anyone who is found to break the law. 'Our message is clear – anti-social behaviour and anti-social use of vehicles will not be tolerated.' --- Day in day out, our reporters in the Manchester Evening News newsroom bring you remarkable stories from all aspects of Mancunian life.
