International Yoga Day 2025: Indians at bigger risk of osteoporosis? Know how yoga can help strengthen bones

International Yoga Day 2025: Bone health is often not at the forefront of focus, like gut health (your daily probiotic check) or muscle strength may be (counting every gram of protein). Not until you break a bone and the heavy cast jolts you awake, bringing this often-overlooked aspect to attention. This is where yoga steps in, and on International Yoga Day, celebrated every year on June 21, let's take a moment to understand how yoga helps strengthen bones, improve balance, and prevent injuries, particularly when Indians are more vulnerable to the risks of osteoporotic fractures. Yoga helps to keep your bones healthy.(Shutterstock) Dr Abhijit Sawant, director and senior Musculoskeletal Radiologist, Vcare Imaging & Diagnostic Centre, Mumbai, shared with HT Lifestyle how yoga may help strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis. He said, 'Osteoporosis and low bone mass (osteopenia) affect over 200 million people worldwide. As the ageing population grows, and people live longer, both domestic and global numbers are rising. The estimated number of people in India with osteoporosis is 61 million, and 80 percent estimated proportion of osteoporosis cases in India are women. Approximately 4.5 million women over 60 in India with fractured spines due to osteoporosis. Over 0.25 million approximate number of hip fractures occur annually in India due to osteoporosis.' Indians at bigger risk? Alarmingly, Indians are at a greater risk of fragile bones much earlier than expected. Osteoporosis is a condition that is associated with old age, traditionally. But indians in younger age groups are seeing fractures and bone degeneration. Addressing this concern, Dr Abhijit Sawant explained the reasons. He said, "Osteoporotic fractures occur 10-12 years earlier in the Indian population compared to Western countries due to Vitamin D Deficiency, sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary habits, and lack of sun exposure. These fractures can lead to pain, disability, and reduced quality of life. They can also place a significant burden on healthcare resources. Early diagnosis and management are crucial for preventing fractures and improving bone health. Given the expansion and ageing of the population, this is a public health crisis." Taking care of bone health is becoming even more important for Indians and yoga is one of the holistic ways to do so. Dr Sawant further shared a detailed guide with us, covering the 3 benefits of yoga for bones and recommended 11 asanas that may improve bone health: Benefits of yoga for bones Bone joints stay healthy as yoga includes stretching of important joints.(Shutterstock) 1. More pressure on bones, the stronger they become Wolff's Law refers to the principle that bones adapt to the stresses placed upon them. Bones become stronger and denser when subjected to regular physical activity and weight-bearing exercises. This means that exercises like walking, running, or weightlifting can stimulate bone growth and increase bone density, but yoga is most applicable to this principle. 2. Increases bone density Exercise in general and yoga in particular offer a proven means of raising bone mineral density (BMD) and improving bone quality, a measure that accounts for the protective effect of bone's trabeculae and correlates with fracture risk. The trabecular component is noted to contribute 30%–70% of bone strength, that is, its resistance to fracture and in fact may be the part that weakens the most in the ageing spine. 3. Good musculoskeletal health Yoga is safe, nearly without cost, self-practised outside of medical facilities, and may result in musculoskeletal health with improved balance, better posture, wider range of motion, greater strength, and refined coordination. Since yoga helps in better balance and coordination, it may protect against falling, a major cause of osteoporotic fractures. Tree Pose (Vrksasana): This pose improves balance and strengthens leg and hip bones. 2. Triangle Pose (Trikonasana): Stretches the sides of the body and strengthens the legs and core. 3. Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II): Strengthens legs and core, improving stability. 4. Side-angle (Parsvakonasana): Strengthens the legs and ankles while stretching the sides of the body and opening the hips and chest. 5. Twisted triangle (Parivrtta Trikonasana): Improve balance, strengthen the legs, and increase spinal flexibility. 6. Locust (Salabhasana): Strengthens the posterior chain, including the back muscles, legs, and arms. 7. Bridge (Setu Bandhasana): Strengthening the back, buttocks, and thighs, as well as improving posture and flexibility. 8. Supine hand to big-toe (Supta Padangusthasana): Improve flexibility in the hamstrings and hips, relieve lower back pain, and calm the mind. 9. Straight leg seated twist (Marichyasana III): Improves spinal flexibility, improves digestion and stretches and opens the shoulders and upper back. 10. Bent knee seated twist (Ardha Matsyendrasana): Spinal flexibility. 11. Corpse (Savasana): Promotes relaxation, reduces stress and anxiety, lowers blood pressure, improves sleep, and enhances mental clarity and focus. ‘So cringe': Indians in Toronto criticised for loud street celebration, video goes viral

Indians often move abroad in search of better education, career prospects, healthcare, and quality of life. While they adapt to new surroundings, many also recreate familiar cultural moments from back home. However, a recent attempt at such a cultural recreation in Toronto has sparked criticism online, for all the wrong reasons. A video that's now going viral shows a group of Indian men playing loud music and dancing on the streets of Toronto, causing what many called a public disturbance. The clip was shared on X by Indian National Congress spokesperson Lavanya Ballal Jain (@LavanyaBallal), who commented, 'We Indians love our country so much that we run away from here at the first opportunity. And we take no time in converting foreign countries into our noisy street corners. This is Toronto.' The post has garnered over 478.2K views and 3K likes. We indians love our country so much that we run away from here at the first opportunity. And we take no time in converting foreign countries into our noisy street corners. This is Toronto. — Lavanya Ballal Jain official (@LavanyaBallal) June 16, 2025 The comment section reflected a divided public opinion. One user from Australia said, 'I live in Australia. I love Australia for its culture and infrastructure. I don't like when people from other countries behave in a way that might be okay in that country but it is ruining the culture of the country they are living in. Sad to see this kind of behaviour.' Another user linked the incident to global perceptions of India, commenting, 'No wonder why Indian passport ranking dropped to 85 from 50s.' A third user commented, 'A majority of Indians lack civic sense, whether they live in India or travel abroad or stay abroad. Civic sense needs to be inculcated right from childhood by the family & strict rules to be implemented by civic authorities. Unfortunately none of this happens & most grow up uncouth.' However, not everyone agreed with the criticism. A fourth user came to the defense of the group and said, 'It's pretty common of young age people dancing and enjoying and they are not disturbing anyone, I have even seen locals dancing on weekends. But blaming only Indians shows inferiority complex.' This isn't the first time such cultural expressions by Indians abroad have stirred debate. In another recent incident, a group of Indian tourists sang the iconic Hindi song Aaja Sanam Madhur Chandni Mein at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Though the impromptu Bollywood-style jam session delighted some, others called it inappropriate. Similarly, in Austria's old town of Innsbruck, a group of 43 Gujarati and Marwadi tourists were criticised for insisting on playing their own music and performing Garba despite local street performers initially refusing. The artists warned that such actions might attract trouble from the police, but eventually gave in. What followed was a five-minute Garba celebration that, while joyful, raised eyebrows over cultural sensitivity and respect for local rules.

‘Zero class or civic sense': Reddit user details nightmare on Patalkot Express

A Reddit user's recent post detailing a 'horrible' trip on the Patalkot Express has gone viral, sparking a wave of discussion about public etiquette and civic sense in India. The user, travelling with his mother in an AC coach with confirmed reservations, recounted how their journey was disrupted by a large family who allegedly transformed the space into an impromptu wedding celebration. The user described how a group of 25-30 people, including eight-nine children, were already occupying their seats when they boarded. While the family initially moved, what followed was a series of escalating disturbances. The user noted the family appeared 'legit rich,' adorned with 'gold chains flashing, branded everything,' but seemingly lacked basic civic sense. The initial hour was bearable, but chaos soon erupted. The family began applying mehendi, while children ran around 'screaming like banshees.' The situation escalated further with an elaborate food spread, including cold drinks, various fruits, dhokla, cake, theplas, and ice cream, accompanied by loud calls and conversations. Post-lunch, the disruptions intensified. The family reportedly pulled out a speaker and began a full-fledged game of tombola, with numbers being called out as if it were a 'wedding sangeet.' This prompted the user to lodge a complaint on Rail Madad. Although officials intervened at the next station and asked the group to quiet down, the family allegedly retaliated by becoming even louder, singing bhajans, playing cards, and taunting the user for complaining. A frustrated user concluded, 'Educated, well-dressed, rich — but absolutely zero class or civic sense. Padhe likhe gawar in the truest sense.' Earlier I used to defend Indians… but today I've lost all hope. byu/godsfavourite17 inindianrailways The post, which garnered 1.9 thousand upvotes on Reddit, has resonated with many users, prompting a flurry of reactions. One user commented, unfortunately, there are people who would still defend this behaviour. about a few months back there was a post in which indians were playing punjabi songs on a German bus, dancing and singing along while it was moving on the road. there were locals in the video who were quiet and didn't complain about it. people in the comment section couldn't realise how messed up and annoying that is , having to shove your culture down someone's else throat just because they aren't revolting against you. indians do have a civic sense and discipline problem.' Another user sympathised with the user who posted, and said, 'Man I feel for you… But you are missing one crucial thing in this incident. This was one large family that didn't have manners and (since you mentioned the gold chains and them being rich) the fact that they still were travelling through an AC coach rather than taking a flight shows that money doesn't buy class. There sure are a lot of such people in our country, but compared to other normal passengers, their number is yourself being an Indian shouldn't stop because of such a bad experience. Never ever let anyone disrespect your ethnicity just cuz there are a few bad elements associated with it.' A third user noted, 'You can sadly see a lot such padhe likhe gawaar abroad as well. I live in New York, and I am appalled by some desis' behaviour at times. Taking calls on loudspeaker, being loud in groups in public places (even when I went to Sky Lagoon in Iceland, a bunch of Indians were screaming and ruined everyone's day). Zero civic sense or empathy for anyone around them.'
