More firms to unlock potential of privacy-enhancing technology: IMDA
More companies will get the help they need to protect sensitive data. The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) is committing to cover up to 50 per cent of the cost for adopting new privacy-enhancing technologies. The tech allows businesses - big and small - to work together and share information securely without exposing private details. Nine firms have used IMDA's sandbox to innovate securely so far. ‘Scripting error' in Hong Kong's HK Express led to access to private information
HK Express, the budget carrier of Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways, mistakenly directed a member to log into another customer's account due to a 'scripting error', enabling him to access the other's personal information including their birth date, according to the privacy watchdog's latest investigations. Advertisement The other seven data leak cases revealed on Monday by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data included one involving CJ Plus Insurance, which sent documents printed on recycled paper that contained resumes and copies of Hong Kong IDs. 'In the digital age, organisations have generally strengthened their awareness and capability in protecting personal data,' Privacy Commissioner Ada Chung Lai-ling said. 'While most [of the eight] cases affected relatively few individuals, these incidents serve as a reminder to the public that information security risks can arise from any work process.' According to Chung, all eight incidents – including one concerning the government's Transport Department – involved negligence in following established procedures to prevent data leaks. Advertisement They were found to have contravened the requirements under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, such as by using personal data for a new purpose and not taking sufficient practical steps to prevent a data leak, according to the office.

India's Max Financial says hacker accessed customer data from its insurance unit
Max Financial Services on Wednesday said its insurance subsidiary Axis Max Life Insurance received communication from an anonymous sender about unauthorized access to its customer data. Without disclosing specifics, the Noida-based financial services company said in its stock exchange filing that Axis Max Life Insurance subsequently initiated an information security assessment and data log analysis. 'A detailed investigation is also underway in consultation with information security experts to assess the root cause of the incident and take remedial action, as necessary,' the company said. Axis Max Life Insurance is the fifth-largest insurer in India, with a sum assured of ₹21.9 trillion (approximately $256 billion) and assets under management of ₹1.75 trillion ($20 billion), as per the data disclosed in its latest annual report.
