Baltimore Orioles reinstate Adley Rutschman and Keegan Akin, but Félix Bautista won't return soon

The Baltimore Orioles reinstated catcher Adley Rutschman from the 10-day injured list Monday and fortified their depleted bullpen by bringing back lefty Keegan Akin from the IL. The return of Akin coincided with the news that closer Félix Bautista will endure an extended stay on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder injury that has kept him sidelined since July 24. "An MRI (determined) there was a lot of swelling in the shoulder," interim manger Tony Mansolino said. "We can't quite make a determination yet, or diagnose it until the swelling goes down. That's going to be probably more weeks than days." Bautista underwent Tommy John surgery in October of 2023 before returning this season to reclaim his role as the team's closer. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 2.60 ERA and 17 saves for the last-place club. "It's incredibly disappointing," Mansolino said of Bautista's latest injury. "He's an important part of the Baltimore Orioles. A very unfortunate set of circumstances." The return of Rutschman should improve the team's offense and lift the mood in the clubhouse. Rutschman — the top overall pick in the 2019 draft — was batting .227 with eight homers and 20 RBIs before going on the IL on June 20 with a left oblique strain. "It's a big piece. He walked into the room and brought a lot of energy, right away," Mansolino said. "Lot of smiles, lot of hugs." Akin missed 21 games with left shoulder inflammation. He's 3-0 with a 3.32 ERA. Baltimore cleared roster space for Rutschman and Akin by optioning pitcher Yaramil Hiraldo to Triple-A Norfolk and designating catcher Jacob Stallings for assignment.

Detroit Tigers to place Kerry Carpenter on injured list with hamstring tightness

The Detroit Tigers will place Kerry Carpenter on the injured list for an aggravated hamstring, manager A.J. Hinch told MLB Network Radio on Tuesday morning. Hinch said Carpenter had an MRI on his right hamstring Monday, June 30, after he injured his hamstring against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday, June 29. With Carpenter, a left-handed hitter, out of the lineup, the Tigers will recall infielder Trey Sweeney, also a lefty, after he was just sent to Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, June 28. If it's the 10-day injured list for Carpenter, he could theoretically return July 11, but with All-Star break beginning Monday, July 14, it's possible the Tigers could keep Carpenter out of the lineup until Friday, July 18, when games resume. Hinch suggested the Tigers were being cautious even though the MRI didn't reveal significant damage. Carpenter has dealt with hamstring issues since early June and also was limited by it during the 2024 postseason. The Tigers slugger felt tightness in his hamstring in the fifth inning during the team's win against the Twins on Sunday. He was pulled from the game. He went 2-for-3, including a home run in the first inning, before he exited. MORE TIGERS NEWS: Detroit Tigers' Spencer Torkelson could come up short in MLB All-Star picks "It's really annoying," Carpenter told reporters Sunday. "But, man, everyone has been working hard on it. It's hard to put a finger on it, but we'll see how it goes from tonight on." Despite the hamstring issues, Carpenter is putting up another fine season toggling between the corner outfield spots and designated hitter. Despite a dip in batting average, slugging percentage and OPS, his power numbers are similar to last season. He has hit 16 home runs through 78 games; last season he hit 18 home runs in 87 total games. He'd been on an uptick the last five games, hitting three homers with six hits in 13 at-bats. Astros' Lance McCullers Jr. lands on IL with blister concern

The post Astros' Lance McCullers Jr. lands on IL with blister concern appeared first on ClutchPoints. Not again. Houston Astros starting pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. is heading to the 15-day injured list with a blister on his right finger, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic. He allowed four runs on five hits versus the Seattle Mariners on Saturday, failing to make it through the third inning. Reliever Nick Fernandez, who has a 9.00 ERA in two MLB appearances, will take McCullers' place on the roster. This news is as painful as it is inevitable. After missing two and a half years with various ailments, including most notably a flexor tendon injury, the two-time World Series champion and 2017 All-Star finally returned to the mound in May. Considering his struggles, there is a chance this recent setback will jeopardize the 31-year-old's future status in the starting rotation. McCullers, a 2012 compensatory first-round draft pick who has spent his entire professional career with the Astros organization, is 2-4 with a 6.90 ERA, 50 strikeouts and 1.737 WHIP in 44 1/3 innings of work this season. He has had some positive moments, but they have been far and few between. Despite a terrific start against the Los Angeles Dodgers on the Fourth of July — gave up just one run on four hits — the veteran right-hander has surrendered nine runs and five walks across his last two times out. He did not advance past the third on both occasions. The Astros have pushed through an avalanche of injuries all yearlong While McCullers tries to get healthy once again, several hurlers are working their way back to Houston. Cristian Javier is scheduled to take the hill in Triple-A Sugar Land at some point, and Luis Garcia and J.P. France will join Spencer Arrighetti in Double-A Corpus Christi. There are obviously multiple barriers to clear, but reinforcements could arrive reasonably soon. The Astros (58-42) hold a five-game lead in the American League West and boast the fifth-best ERA in MLB, so the prospect of them becoming healthier should delight Space City and scare everyone else. The rotation and lineup is bereft of considerable talent, including Yordan Alvarez, Jeremy Pena, Javier Pena and Isaac Paredes. Hunter Brown, Framber Valdez, Jose Altuve, the awakening Christian Walker and a Josh Hader-led bullpen can keep this club afloat for now, but even the seemingly impervious Houston has its breaking point. Ideally, though, fans will not have to witness it. They will trust in the process that has produced stellar results so far and hope for some good fortune imminently. But when looking at just the most recent injury news, one has to feel for Lance McCullers Jr. His path back to MLB success continues to be impeded. Yankees place Aaron Judge on 10-day IL as slugger avoids worst

The New York Yankees placed Aaron Judge on the 10-day injured list on Sunday with a right flexor strain as fears were calmed over speculation that the injury could have been more serious. An MRI showed that Judge did not have any acute damage to his ulnar collateral ligament, which would have likely required Tommy John surgery and an extended stay on the IL. He missed just his second game of the season as the team lost to the Philadelphia Phillies. He had a platelet-rich plasma injection, and he could return to action anywhere from 10 to 14 days. "You never want to go in the tube. It's never fun. You don't know what's going to show up," Judge said. "That's why I kind of pushed off a lot of that imaging and stuff like that, because if I don't know what's going on, it can't hurt you, I guess." Yankees manager Aaron Boone breathed a sigh of relief. "All in all, we got good news today," he said. "I think all of us kind of feared the worst." Judge admitted to Boone on Friday that he had been having trouble throwing past 60 feet. "We're going up against a Phillies team, they can hit the ball over the park. I just didn't want to put our pitchers in jeopardy, just not be able to come up and make a play for them," he said. The roster decision was retroactive to Saturday, and the Yankees traded for Amed Rosario, who the team acquired in a deal with the Washington Nationals, to take his spot. Judge was putting together another MVP-like season. He won the American League MVP last season and in 2022. This year, Judge is leading the majors in batting average (.342), on-base percentage (.449), slugging percentage (.711), OPS (1.160) and hits (129). He has 37 home runs and 85 RBI. The Yankees could use him back soon. The team is 56-48 and in second place in the American League East.

Royals place All-Star P Kris Bubic (rotator cuff) on IL

July 27 - The Kansas City Royals placed All-Star left-hander Kris Bubic on the 15-day injured list Sunday due a left rotator cuff strain. The Royals also sent rookie outfielder Jac Caglianone to the 10-day IL with a strained left hamstring. Bubic, 27, complained of shoulder stiffness following Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Cleveland Guardians. He lasted only 2 2/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and four walks. The first-time All-Star is 8-7 with a 2.55 ERA through 20 starts this season. He has struck out 116 batters and walked 39 in 116 1/3 innings. Bubic is 19-36 with a 4.14 ERA in 117 games (80 starts) since making his major league debut in 2020 for the Royals, who drafted him in the first round in 2018. Caglianone felt tightness in his hamstring while running down a ball in the gap in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. The 22-year-old is batting .147 with five homers and 10 RBIs in 22 games this season. The Royals recalled right-hander Jonathan Bowlan from Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move. Bowlan, 28, is 1-2 with a 4.94 ERA in 17 relief appearances this season for Kansas City. --Field Level Media
