Biggest takeaways from Lions' first training camp practice: Who played guard, center?
Detroit Lions training camp is officially underway, as the team took to the practice field for the first session on Sunday. Before hitting the field, head coach Dan Campbell gave some injury updates, with the most notable being that Levi Onwuzurike has been ruled out for the 2025 season because of an ACL injury, according to Tim Twentyman of "Levi's surgery was significant, and it needed to be done," Campbell said. "Out of his control and needed to be done. So he will miss the season." Also of note, Campbell revealed that left tackle Taylor Decker had a clean-up procedure on his shoulder but could be back after the Hall of Fame Game. Those weren't the only injury notes from Sunday. Here's a look at another and some other takeaways from Detroit's first practice of training camp. Who didn't practice? Aside from the guys on injury lists, edge rusher Al-Quadin Muhammad, linebacker Alex Anzalone and linebacker Anthony Pittman didn't practice, per Pride of Detroit's Jeremy Reisman. More on Anzalone shortly. Ennis Rakestraw injured According to Nolan Bianchi of The Detroit News, cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. left the session early and is being evaluated for a chest injury. "Rakestraw collided with a receiver during a pass play in 11-on-11 and was escorted to the locker room after being checked on the sideline," he revealed. There is no further update on the severity as of this writing. Lions show their "Plan A" on offensive line? Also per Bianchi, the Lions had rookie Tate Ratledge take all of the first-team reps at center on Sunday, with Graham Glasgow and Christian Mahogany playing at right and left guard, respectively. "A lot can change between now and Week 1, but Ratledge's placement on the first day of camp suggests that putting him at center is their Plan A," Bianchi wrote. That trio was expected to take the guard and center spots in some combination. Now we have an early idea about where they're going to end up. Alex Anzalone arrives but doesn't practice Campbell told reporters that Anzalone has arrived at training camp and passed his conditioning test with flying colors. The fact that Anzalone has shown up indicates he isn't going to hold out amid his perceived dissatisfaction with his contract as he enters the final year of his deal. However, a hold-in remains possible after Anzalone did not practice for the Lions' first day of camp, although Campbell doesn't see that happening. 'No way, right?' Campbell said of a possible hold-in, per Pride of Detroit's Jeremy Reisman. 'I refuse to believe that. I refuse to believe that.' When asked if there was anything in the works involving a new contract for the Lions linebacker, Campbell said "no, not that I can really talk about." Who took the reps at left tackle? According to Jeff Risdon of Lions Wire, Dan Skipper was the fill-in for Decker. Taking the second- and third-team reps at left tackle were Jamarco Jones and Giovanni Manu, respectively. Risdon added that Manu appears to have more muscle than he did during his rookie year while also noting that "Manu's calves and thighs were definitely more toned and sculpted than a year ago." The backup quarterbacks Risdon didn't see much of a change with Hendon Hooker. "Just as was the case last season, he mixes in some outstanding throws with some ponderous misses," Risdon said of Hooker before noting that he "didn't see or hear any of last year's issues with Hooker being too hesitant to throw the ball." Risdon also noted that Hooker's competition for the backup spot behind Jared Goff, Kyle Allen, was solid but "showed the weakest arm" of the quarterbacks. "Kyle Allen is the new No. 3 and from one practice, it's easy to see why the Lions had interest," Risdon said. Lions rotate in the slot The Lions saw all of their projected starters at cornerback, Terrion Arnold, Amik Robertson and D.J. Reed, get reps in the slot, Risdon said. Robertson is expected to return to his role as the team's primary slot corner in 2025 after excelling in the role in his first season in Detroit. Who filled in for Levi? With Levi Onwuzurike out and Alim McNeill uncertain for Week 1, there's a spot open on the starting defensive line next to DJ Reader. For now, per Reisman, rookie Tyleik Williams "was starting in Levi's place today." Risdon says Pat O'Connor got extra looks, and Chris Smith and Myles Adams also got involved. Cardinals get 2 crucial injury updates
The post Cardinals get 2 crucial injury updates appeared first on ClutchPoints. The St. Louis Cardinals' form lately has been up and down as of late. They were just swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates on the road. Before those three straight losses, they swept the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field. Those two results came after splitting a series with the Chicago Cubs at home, and on Friday, the Cardinals and Cubs will resume their intense rivalry. Before the series opener, Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak gave an update on a couple of injured contributors to the press, including the Athletic's Katie Woo on X, formerly Twitter. Advertisement 'John Mozeliak said today Iván Herrera (hamstring) is ramping up well and could begin a rehab assignment in roughly a week and a half & a post-ASB return is possible,' posted Woo on the social media platform. 'Also said Jordan Walker (appendicitis) will continue getting reps with Springfield but shouldn't be too long.' Getting both Herrera and Walker back would be very useful indeed. Herrera had taken over the starting catching job. Walker was starting to find his footing at the major league level. Both players will hopefully be long-term pieces for the franchise. Mozeliak hopes they will be a part of his legacy with St. Louis, as he's set to leave his current role after the season. Will Herrera and Walker be able to get back in time to help the Cardinals make a postseason push? Can Jordan Walker and Ivan Herrera help Cardinals after All-Star Break? Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Advertisement Herrera's Grade 2 left hamstring strain was a tough blow to the Cards when he went down a couple weeks ago. He'd really come into his own at the starting backstop and was building a good rapport with the pitching staff. Could St. Louis finally have Yadier Molina's heir apparent? Free agent Willson Contreras was supposed to fill that role, but now he's at first base. For now however, the Cardinals will have to do without him. As for Walker, his appendicitis was certainly an unexpected blow. Yet he's already rehabbing with Springfield in the minors, so don't be surprised if he does make his return before the All-Star Break. It is also possible that St. Louis decides to take a little more cautious route and bring their budding slugger back after the break. If Walker and Herrera can impact their postseason hopes, then the sooner the Cards get them back, the better. Blue Jays get flurry of injury updates on Max Scherzer, others
The post Blue Jays get flurry of injury updates on Max Scherzer, others appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Toronto Blue Jays have been scorching hot over the last two weeks, boasting the second-best record in baseball since June 1. Toronto has gained ground on the New York Yankees in the AL East. And the team could get some significant reinforcements with the return of key contributors from the injured list. Advertisement The Blue Jays provided a status update on several players currently sidelined by injury. Starting pitcher Max Scherzer was the headliner as the team reported he would throw 60-65 pitches in a Triple-A rehab start Friday, per The Athletic's Mitch Bannon. Toronto's news drop also touched on three relief pitchers, announcing that Yimi Garcia threw a bullpen session on Thursday that 'went well.' Nick Sandlin had a rehab appearance in Triple-A Thursday and the Blue Jays are 'seeing how he bounces back.' And the team noted that Ryan Burr would participate in a live BP session Saturday, via Bannon. The Blue Jays hope to get healthy amid hot streak Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images Finally, the Blue Jays gave updates on their banged up outfielders. Daulton Varsho has experienced an uptick in his 'running, hitting live pitching, [and] throwing.' Meanwhile, Anthony Santander is 'starting light baseball activities' at Toronto's player development complex. And, lastly, Nathan Lukes is still out with a concussion but the third-year pro is 'feeling better,' per Bannon. Advertisement Alejandro Kirk has stepped up for the Blue Jays with Santander and Varsho sidelined. The All-Star catcher is slashing an absurd .447/.462/.711 with two home runs, four doubles and nine RBI in nine games in June. The Blue Jays lost Santander to shoulder inflammation at the end of May. However, the team's big free agent addition this offseason had struggled prior to the injury. Santander is hitting .170 with a .577 OPS in 50 games so far this year. Varsho also went down with an injury at the end of May, The center fielder strained his hamstring while running the bases against the Athletics. He's produced a .783 OPS with eight home runs, 20 RBI and 14 runs scored in 24 games for the Blue Jays. Both Varsho and Santander were placed on the 10-day IL. Scherzer on the other hand has missed significant time this season. The Blue Jays signed Scherzer to a one-year, $15.5 million contract over the offseason. Unfortunately, he hasn't been able to make much of an impact in his 18th MLB season. Scherzer was injured in his Blue Jays debut and placed on the 60-day IL with inflammation in his right thumb. Advertisement Despite the injuries, the Blue Jays are 8-2 since the calendar changed to June. And the team has won 12 of the last 14 games entering play on Friday.
