Who won the Jake Paul fight? Google AI Overview mistake stirs conspiracies
Uhhh Google??? Apparently the fight already has a winner #jake #jakepaul #paul #juliochavezjr #fight #google #rigged
Boxing fans using Google to search for the Jake Paul-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight encountered quite the surprise Saturday when the search engine's AI Overview informed users Paul had already won the bout by unanimous decision.
But, uh. The fight hadn't occurred yet.
This may have been a case of Google's AI hallucinating or the result of the AI misreading live blogs or results pages. Either way, it's a pretty bad look. First, because it proves once again how unreliable Google's AI Overview can for real-time news-gathering. Second, because it led to the inevitable accusations that the Paul-Chavez Jr. fight was rigged.
Take a new-ish technology rolled out to the masses before it's foolproof, mix it with a sport notorious for conspiracy and top it off with a dash of Jake Paul and you get plenty of comments like this:
Why does Google show Jake Paul already winning by unanimous decision?
Google already has Julio Cesar Chavez losing to Jake Paul and the fight ain't even start yet smh
And google has leaked the script again. !!!!!! @jakepaul vs Julio Caesar Chavez Junior #Boxing #sportsgambling !!!! Jake Paul takes the win !!!!!
