Dad clarifies incident involving officer, son

Confusion over the time line of events leading to the indictment of a former Cumberland County Sheriff's Office correction officer have been clarified by the teen's father. The series of events led to the indictment of Danny Ray Stone, 57, who was indicted by the county grand jury June 17 on charges of assault and official oppression. The original story placed the scenario as taking place in Juvenile Court on March 7. The teen's father said this was incorrect and that the court appearance and the incident and two separate events. The 14-year-old was summoned into Juvenile Court two weeks prior to the March 7 date for reasons not clear and at that time was ordered to serve two consecutive weekends by the judge. Nothing happened in court. On the first weekend, the teen was in the process of purchasing a soft drink in juvenile detention when he slipped or tripped and struck the back of his head on a desk. This resulted in a trip to the emergency room and treatment including two staples to close the wound. The incident involving the corrections officer occurred on the second weekend when the 14-year-old arrived at the detention center to serve his second weekend. The minor's father explained his son arrived early and for unknown reasons, decided to leave seven minutes before his 4 p.m. check-in time. The father continued his son was free to go because he was early. Corrections officers tried to detain him and some sort of incident took place, resulting incident between the corrections officer and the teen, the father said. While the father was outside the detention center and did not witness what took place, the father said his wife was present along with deputies and other corrections officers. The incident was captured on surveillance video. The Chronicle apologizes for the confusion in the original story and is happy add clarification. Stone is to appear in Criminal Court July 8 for arraignment.
