I transformed my kitchen for just £150 by watching TikTok tutorials, experts quoted me £3,000

A savvy dental nurse who refused to splash out thousands on a pricey renovation has revealed how she transformed her dreary kitchen for just £150. Natalie Stainthorpe, from Middlesbrough, wasn't keen on forking out the £3,000 it would've cost to rip out her old kitchen - so she got creative instead. After moving into her new home, the 34-year-old was desperate to brighten up the dark room, which barely got any natural light thanks to an extension out the back. Armed with TikTok tutorials and a vision, she set out to transform the space without breaking the bank - and managed to come in a whole £100 under her original £250 budget. 'I just couldn't stand how dark and gloomy it felt - I wanted a fresh, light space where I'd actually enjoy cooking and spending time with my family,' she said. 'The kitchen before was in good condition, but needed a little bit of TLC and I had a vision for the room. 'We did a rough estimate of how much it would cost to completely replace the kitchen from a family friend and we were looking at quite a lot of money - around £2,000 to £3,000 - which was money we didn't have. 'I decided that I was going to do a budget-friendly makeover instead.' Swapping pricey new units for a few tins of paint and rolls of vinyl, Natalie roped in her partner and sister to help freshen up the cupboards, wrap the worktops and breathe new life into the handles. She bagged cupboard paint for under £15 a tin, snapped up bargain vinyl from B&Q and picked up all her decorating bits from B&M to keep costs down. The makeover took around a month, squeezed in between shifts and weekends, but the results speak for themselves - the once gloomy kitchen now bright, airy and looking brand new. Natalie said: 'Our original budget was £250 - I didn't want to spend more than that, so to come so far under budget was amazing. 'It was quite a dark room - dark floors, worktops and cupboards and I really wanted to lighten the space up as because of the extension on the back we don't get that much natural light. 'We found the vinyl easy on the straight parts of the worktops, around the sink was a bit fiddly, we watched a few tutorials on YouTube on how to do it around the sink to try and minimise any mistakes. 'My partner Chris actually did most of the sink area as I ran out of patience with it. We repurposed the handles that were already on the units as to replace 14 handles in matte black was quite expensive. 'We gave them a light sand and then we sprayed them with Rust-Oleum black matte spray paint and then sealed with a matte sealant spray. 'We got all our painting supplies from B&M to keep the costs down and budget-friendly - they sell such an amazing range of painting and decorating tools to help with projects like this. 'I spent some time researching how to vinyl worktops watching videos on YouTube and TikTok. 'I also got lots of tips from my friend who has done lots of vinyling to change up her rental home.' Natalie, who documented her journey on TikTok, says the whole project took around three to four weeks to complete as she picked it up on days off and weekends. She said: 'It definitely wasn't a quick transformation but that was fine with us, we loved seeing it slowly come together. 'The hardest part for me was probably the vinyling, simply because it took more brain power than the rest, and a lot of patience - something I'm known to not have a lot of. 'We didn't encounter any mistakes, we just took our time with the project - apart from when I spilt paint on my hob. 'If I was to start this project again, I wouldn't change anything - I love how we took our time and worked together to get our final look in here. Rome wasn't built in a day and sometimes time and money restrict a quick transformation. 'I'm all for realistic budget makeovers and those take time. 'The difference it's made is amazing, it's now light and airy, it's really brightened up the room, I'm still obsessed with it now two months down the line. 'We've had such an amazing reaction to our makeover, my friends and family said it looks like a brand new kitchen and it's had such a good response both on my Instagram and TikTok. 'My advice would be to take your time, it's okay if you don't get a transformation like this done in a day like you can sometimes see on social media. 'My second piece of advice to make sure the longevity of your makeover is prep, prep, prep. 'Spend time prepping your units and surfaces for painting, you'll thank yourself later. 'It just goes to show, you don't always need a big budget - sometimes a bit of patience and a few clever tricks can completely change your home.'

We bought our kitchen on Facebook Marketplace for £50 – now it's a marble dream for a fraction of what it should've cost

RENOVATING any room in your home can break the bank, but kitchens can be especially pricey. But this couple hit the jackpot when they came across their dream kitchen on Facebook Marketplace. 2 2 The entire thing only set the DIY fans back £50 - but they had to put in the hard work to make it fit their trendy vision. Sharing the entire process on TikTok on the account @thestylepad_uk, the couple explained how the renovation began. After finding the entire kitchen listed on Facebook Marketplace, they knew they had their work cut out, since they'd have to remove the entire kitchen from the previous owner's home before moving it to their house 40 minutes away. Everything had to be unscrewed and removed bit by bit, including heavy appliances. Three trips with a trailer later and the entire kitchen had been moved into their extension, ready to be re-assembled. "This was the part I started to regret my life choices," the DIY whizz explained in the viral video. Of course, everything had to be totally reconfigured to fit the new space too, which took a lot of time and effort. The couple got lucky again when they discovered their neighbours were throwing away a posh butler sink, which they nabbed for free. The next step was to paint every single piece of cabinetry in a primer then in a trendy sage green colour. They also added laminate countertops and splashbacks with a posh marble design, and even made a floating shelf and their own oven hood. I saved £2k by creating my own bespoke fitted wardrobe with flatpack Argos buys But the couple also wanted an island for their new kitchen, so found an rustic wooden table on Facebook Marketplace and gave it a much needed makeover. The first problem was the table was far too short to be used as an island, so they added new legs to make it the right height. The new kitchen island also got a new wood stain, a brass handle to hold tea towels and a matching marble top. After everything was finished you'd never be able to tell the kitchen wasn't professionally installed - and the DIY extras looked so posh too. But the main win for the couple was the fact they saved so much cash by doing it all themselves. After showing off the finished kitchen on TikTok people couldn't believe how perfectly it all came together. One said: "Good lord! I mean, that's just incredible, you should go into business doing this." A second agreed: "Amazing and fantastic to see a perfectly solid kitchen given a new lease of life." "Stunning, looks incredible, like a £35k bespoke kitchen," another chimed in. 5 Must-have gardening tools Nick Grey, Gtech Inventor and CEO revealed the best pieces of kit you need to get jobs done around the house and garden. 'Dad, The House Is Underwater' — Florida Family's $3,500 Costco Fridge Turns Into $700,000 Nightmare: 'They Drop the Ball, I Foot The Bill'

A Florida family thought they were upgrading their kitchen. Instead, they say they got a disaster — one that soaked their home, drained their finances, and may soon head to court. According to WJXT-TV's News4JAX in Jacksonville, Saint. John's resident Bradley Byrd and his family purchased a $3,500 KitchenAid refrigerator from Costco in December. The fridge was delivered and installed by a third-party company contracted by the warehouse-club chain — but just six hours later, Byrd got a FaceTime call from his daughter that stopped him cold. "Dad, the house is underwater," she told him. Don't Miss: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — Maximize saving for your retirement and cut down on taxes: . Byrd rushed home to find water flooding the floors. Video footage he later shared shows the damage: soaked carpets, standing water, and furniture floating. The family says the refrigerator's water line had been installed incorrectly — a critical error that allegedly caused the line to rupture after being pinched beneath the fridge's wheels. "They allowed the refrigerator's wheels to sit on a line, which caused a crack that grew larger and larger," Byrd told News4JAX. The result? Mold, structural damage, and a $700,000 headache, according to a public adjuster's estimate. The family was forced to evacuate their home just before Christmas and spent months living in an Airbnb. They've since returned, but Byrd says their home is still partially unlivable — with no working kitchen or bathroom, and lawn chairs and folding tables standing in for real furniture. "We purchased these lovely tables to prepare food on and to eat at," Byrd said, with dry irony. So far, Byrd estimates he's spent around $300,000 out-of-pocket on remediation, storage, testing, and repairs. While Costco has provided $38,000 for temporary living expenses and — according to Byrd — offered $175,000 toward damages, the family has not accepted the settlement. Legal action is now on the table. Trending: Invest where it hurts — and help millions heal:. News4JAX reports that its team reached out to Costco multiple times via phone, email, and social media. As of publication, the company had not responded. The contractor responsible for delivery and installation, RXO Last Mile, declined to comment, reportedly stating that the issue is not its to resolve "They drop the ball and are hoping that I foot the bill with my life savings for their bottom line," Byrd told News4JAX. He's now documenting the ordeal publicly on and even paid for local billboards to raise awareness. His site includes a detailed cost breakdown, showing the scope of the damage and his mounting expenses, which include: $360,000 in estimated damage to the home $76,000 in personal property losses $78,000 in alternative housing expenses $117,000 for mitigation, moving, and storage $72,000 in professional services and legal preparation At the center of the story is a growing concern many homeowners may not think about: who's responsible when a third-party contractor makes a mistake? Costco contracts out appliance installations to outside vendors — in this case, RXO — and the legal responsibility for any errors may ultimately depend on what's proven in court. While Costco did provide some assistance, the Byrds say it's not nearly enough. As of now, no lawsuit has been filed, but Byrd told News4JAX, "I think that, unfortunately, is the next step."This case has raised questions about what recourse homeowners have when something goes wrong with a professional installation. In many cases, appliance damage caused by poor installation may not be fully covered by a standard homeowners insurance policy — especially if the damage is considered preventable or due to contractor error. Some experts suggest: Always photograph the installation as it happens Check water lines and electrical connections before accepting delivery Request the installer's credentials and inquire whether the work is bonded or insured Consider supplemental liability insurance or home warranties that cover third-party work As for the Byrds, they're still hoping for resolution — and a return to normal life. Until then, their kitchen remains unfinished, their bathroom nonfunctional, and their story a cautionary tale for anyone who assumes a fridge upgrade is as simple as plug-and-play. I'm building my dream kitchen on a budget & bagged an £830 fridge freezer FREE – the stench was vile but it was worth it

SHE'S creating her dream kitchen, but is having to do so on a tight budget. So when she saw an £830 fridge freezer on Facebook Marketplace for FREE, Kelly knew she had to nab it. 9 9 9 9 But getting it in, clean and fitting it was anything but easy, and she documented the process on her TikTok page. "It truly is amazing what people get rid of!" she said. She picked the fridge up from a "building site" and was told it was all in working order but just needed a clean. "I'm pretty sure that this hasn't been opened in a long, long time," Kelly admitted. "The stench was unreal and, to top it off, I found fish in there! "I am NOT a fish lover and that expensive salmon is five years old." Once she'd managed to "dispose of" the offending fish, she got to work cleaning the fridge - taking every shelf and drawer out from inside, so that she could give it a deep clean. It needed a lot of "elbow grease", Kelly said, and she got stuck in with sponges, sprays and cleaning brushes. "I used lots of bleach on this thing," she laughed. "It was so strong I'm pretty sure I burnt the nostril hairs off. Stacey Solomon reveals 99p transformation of grubby kitchen unit she picked up on Facebook Marketplace so it looks brand new "It was the only thing that I really felt was going to kill that bacteria because God knows how long that's been growing in there." Once the bottom half - the freezer - was done, Kelly moved onto the fridge, removing each part one at a time, cleaning and putting it back. "This felt like a never-ending job," she sighed. "I love to clean but this was a lot, although very satisfying." Once the "cleaning marathon" was done, Kelly changed the hinges to match the rest of her kitchen, and enlisted the help of her stepdad to rewire the plug, which had been cut off. "We rewired the plug in seconds, attached the doors together and it was done," Kelly said, as she showed herself pushing the fridge freezer into its allocated slot. What are the biggest kitchen trends of 2025? The kitchen is the heart of every home and this year it's taking centre stage, Tracy Coleman, Product Director at High Street TV told Fabulous. Hardworking appliances Space-saving essentials are needed in every room of the house, and the kitchen is no exception, meaning appliances are often doing double (or triple) the job. Expect to see air fryer ovens that roast, bake, and fry or blenders with attachments for everything from chopping to grinding. Health and wellness With people becoming more mindful of what they eat and how it impacts their well-being, kitchen appliances are stepping up to meet the demand for healthier, more balanced lifestyles. Air fryers remain hugely popular, along with blenders and juicers that retain nutrients. Energy-bill conscious Finally, with rising energy bills and an increased focus on sustainability, people are turning to appliances that help reduce power consumption and keep costs down. More people are finding joy in cooking at home as a cost-effective way to enjoy delicious, nutritious meals. Cooking at home doesn't just save money—it's also a fun way to bring the family together or experiment with new recipes. With the right tools, such as multi-functional appliances and smart kitchen gadgets, creating meals at home becomes easier, faster, and more satisfying. "A fully working integrated fridge completely free!" "My best and worst Facebook marketplace find in one!" she captioned the video. "I've been looking for a integrated fridge freezer ever since I bought this unit. "I wasn't prepared to buy new, so will some patience (somehow) but mainly will power I found this baby! "And what a gem it turned out to be!" 9 9 9 9 9
