Shih Tzu credited with saving the lives of 2 tiny kittens

Two rescued kittens are seen in this image handed out by the B.C. SPCA. The B.C. SPCA is crediting a Shih Tzu named Laynee with saving the lives of two tiny kittens in the Okanagan last week. Laynee was out for a bathroom break in the early morning hours of July 11, when she refused to come back into the house, her owner Brady Verhaeghe told the charity. Instead, the dog was focused on something hidden underneath a bush. Verhaeghe walked over to investigate when he heard a meow. Under the bush was a little black kitten, nose-to-nose with his dog. 'I picked up the kitten and was walking away when I heard another faint 'meow.' Laynee went straight back to the bush, and we spent a half an hour trying to get the other kitten to come out,' he said in a Friday media release from the B.C. SPCA. The second kitten eventually emerged and Verhaeghe brought them inside, as it was dark out and they were shivering. 'Both kittens nestled into my arms right away,' he said. 'You could tell they were longing to be helped – they didn't hesitate at all.' Verhaeghe put the kittens in a box by his bed, and Laynee kept a close eye on the new arrivals. He told the B.C. SPCA his Shih Tzu is usually shy around other animals, so he was surprised by her reaction to the kittens. 'They didn't make much noise, but every time they did, Laynee would immediately check on them, she didn't mind them crawling all over her,' he said. Laynee Laynee the Shih Tzu is seen in this image handed out by the B.C. SPCA. The next day, Verhaeghe put the kittens back under the bush in case their mother returned, but when no cat appeared for a few hours, he brought them to the B.C. SPCA shelter in Kelowna. 'When we examined the kittens, they were really thin and their gums were pale, but they were bright-eyed and hungry which was a good sign,' said Shannon Paille, manager of the animal centre, in the release. 'They are so young they need to be bottle-fed. One of our amazing B.C. SPCA fosters is continuing the kittens' care in their home, which is the best place for them to be.' The B.C. SPCA says the finder did the right thing. The organization advises people who find young kittens to leave them be if they don't look sick or injured – their mother is likely out hunting and will return. But if the animals appear hurt or ill, are in an unsafe spot, or the cat doesn't return, they should be taken to a rescue. As for the kittens Laynee found, the B.C. SPCA says they will be up for adoption once they reach eight weeks old.

Peterborough cardboard box kittens to be named after rescuers

Tiny abandoned kittens found in a cardboard box during a community litter pick are to be named after their six little fluffballs were discovered on a path near Peterborough's Embankment area during the cleanup on 3 July by Peterborough Litter from Peterborough Cat Rescue collected the kittens, which were only about three or four weeks old, and all are said to be gaining weight and doing for the charity, Vicki Heyden, said the grey and white and black kittens - two boys and four girls - are to be named after their Womble rescuers - Harry, Steve, Emma, Amy, Lisa and Ariana. The Wombles group had been clearing litter from Bishops Road to the Embankment in the city when they came across the member Harry Machin said it was "certainly the most unusual litter we have found for quite a while".Although food had been left in the box, there was no water and fosterer Ms Heyden said the animals were underweight for their - a black female - weighed only 150g (5.3oz) and has been placed with a receptive nursing mother other five are all being hand-reared by Ms Heyden and her partner at their home in Stamford, are now gaining weight and confidence and will be put up for adoption when they are ready."They squeak and want feeding all the time, but they are going from strength to strength," Ms Heyden she expressed concern about the kittens' mother, who was not with the abandoned litter, and would now be "crying out and looking for her kittens because they usually stay with their mother until they are about nine weeks old". She came up with the idea of naming them after their rescuers because she "thought if would be nice to reach out and give the litter pickers an update".One of those involved has already applied to adopt her namesake Machin, one of the Wombles who found the kittens, said while he thought "Harry" was an unusual name for a kitten, "it was absolutely lovely that Vicki told us and it's very nice to get an update and know they've been fostered". 'Smelly cats' in rubbish dump named after TV's Friends

Six abandoned kittens suffering from fleas, worms and malnutrition have been rehomed after being found in a rubbish tip in the south of Scotland. The litter, three males and three females, were given the names of the characters from the sitcom Friends - Joey, Ross, Chandler, Phoebe, Monica and Rachel. Borders Pet Rescue nursed the four-week-old kittens back to health after they were rescued from Eyemouth Recycling Centre. Centre manager Kim McNeill said the "strong bond and the laughter they brought to us" inspired the names and they had now all found "wonderful homes". Kim said a member of the public contacted them after finding the kittens at the recycling centre in a "heartbreaking scene" on 27 May. She said: "All were suffering from severe malnutrition, flea and worm infestations, and painful eye infections. "They were frightened, weak, and understandably wary of human contact." She said their vet team provided medical treatment for their eyes and the parasites. Kim added: "These kittens needed more than medicine - they needed time, patience, and love. "Fortunately, one of our amazing foster carers stepped in and gave the kittens a safe, nurturing environment where they could begin to trust again. "Over several weeks, they slowly gained confidence, learned how to play, and experienced the warmth of a home for the first time." After about a month in foster care they were "healthy and full of personality" and Borders Pet Rescue began to look for their "forever homes". "Inspired by their strong bond and the laughter they brought to us, we named them after characters from Friends - three girls and three boys," Kim said. In the 90s comedy, guitar-playing character Phoebe famously sang a song 'Smelly Cat' about a neglected pet. Kim said their Kitten Friends had "captured hearts" on social media, allowing them to raise thousands of pounds for their veterinary care and spread the word about their search for owners. "We're delighted to share that all six kittens have now been adopted into wonderful homes, each beginning a new chapter filled with love and joy," she said.

Injured kittens found abandoned in four areas in Douglas

Four kittens have been found injured and abandoned in four separate locations across the Manx capital. The animals were found by a bank on Athol Street, near Tesco on Lake Road, on Kensington Road and at Shaws Brow Car Park in Douglas last month, police said. Issuing an "urgent appeal" the Isle of Man Constabulary said "the circumstances surrounding how they came to be injured remain unclear".It appealed to any residents who "may have seen anything unusual or concerning" at the different locations between 12:30 and 15:00 BST on 16 June to come forward. A spokesman said: "Even the smallest piece of information or footage from a dashcam could assist with our enquiries."As "no specific cause has been confirmed" they would be "keeping an open mind as to what may have happened", he added.
