July 4 weekend in Livermore marred by large fight, knife assault, drive-by shooting

Police in Livermore are investigating after multiple violent incidents that took place over the July 4 holiday weekend, including a fight involving dozens of people, a knife assault and a drive-by shooting. Officers said that the violent incidents took place within a two-hour span early Saturday. Around 12:30 a.m., police were called to the area of Chestnut Street and North "I" Street following reports of a fight involving about 30 people near the intersection. A witness told officers that a man with a gun was seen running toward Chestnut Street and North Livermore Avenue. Officers said they were able to locate the suspect. After establishing a perimeter, the suspect was found hiding in a nearby backyard and a handgun was recovered. The suspect, a 17-year-old male Livermore resident, was booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of carrying a concealed firearm and being a minor in possession of a handgun. Police said there were no reports of serious injuries from the incident. About a half hour later, officers were called to the same area after reports of a man who had been assaulted with a knife. Police said the victim had visible injuries but was not cooperative with officers. Around 2 a.m., officers were called to the 300 block of Chestnut Street for reports of a drive-by shooting. Police said a man in his 20s sustained a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. Police did not release information about a suspect. Along with the above incidents, police said they responded to more than 90 fireworks-related calls that night. "I know the widespread use of illegal fireworks continues to frustrate many in our community, including public safety personnel," Police Chief Jeramy Young said in a statement Saturday afternoon. Young added, "I want to thank all the officers and dispatchers who worked last night to manage an exceptionally high call volume while continuing to prioritize public safety."

Orange deputies fatally shoot man with knife who allegedly held girlfriend against her will, Sheriff's Office says

A knife-wielding man was fatally shot Monday afternoon by Orange County deputies after his girlfriend told law enforcement he held her against her will overnight, Orange County Undersheriff Mark Canty said. Deputies responded to the Isles at East Millenia apartments on Lake Fountain Drive after receiving a call around 12:45 p.m. from a woman who said her 57-year-old boyfriend was on drugs and had kept her inside the apartment at knifepoint since the previous night, Canty said at a news conference later on Monday. The woman spoke to deputies at the scene and said the man had threatened her with a knife. The deputies intended to arrest him for aggravated assault, but he barricaded himself inside the apartment. Deputies requested a negotiator and assistance from a SWAT team around 2:45 p.m., according to Canty. While negotiations with the man continued, the SWAT team positioned itself around the apartment. The man eventually exited the room he was in and moved toward deputies with a knife, causing two deputies to shoot him, Canty said. He was transported to the hospital, where he later died. The entire incident lasted 3½ hours to 4 hours, according to Canty. Per procedure, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting and will turn over its findings to the Orange-Osceola State Attorney's Office for review. The Sheriff's Office will then conduct its own internal investigation, according to Canty. The deputies who fired their weapons are now on temporary paid administrative leave pending FDLE's initial review. The Sheriff's Office will release body-cam footage of the shooting within 30 days.

18 injured in knife attack by woman at Hamburg train station

ALBAWABA - According to the German tabloid Bild, 18 people were hurt in a knife assault at a Hamburg train station on Friday night, with many of them in severe condition. Six people suffered significant injuries, and four are in critical condition, according to authorities. Moderate to light wounds were treated for the remaining patients. Police arrested the suspect, a 39-year-old woman, at the site without encountering any opposition. The wounded were taken to local hospitals by emergency personnel while the station was partly closed up. The motivation for the assault is yet unknown, but current investigations are looking into the potential of mental health difficulties, police stated in an official statement. As of right now, there is no evidence to support a political or radical motive. Multiple ambulances were seen on the scene, and police were seen cordoning off portions of the station. In a direct phone conversation with the Mayor of Hamburg, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz voiced his alarm, calling the event "shocking" in a post on X (previously Twitter). The assault raises questions about public safety at congested train hubs as it follows a series of similar violent episodes that have happened in Germany in recent months.
