Alaska Airlines plane hits multiple deer while landing in Kodiak, Alaska. It's more common than you might think

Alaska Airlines planes are seen at Anchorage airport on Monday, June 2. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating after an Alaska Airlines plane struck several deer while landing in Kodiak, Alaska on July 24. (Jenny Kane/AP via CNN Newsource) Washington — The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating after an Alaska Airlines plane struck several deer while landing in Kodiak, Alaska Thursday. Alaska Airlines flight 231, a Boeing 737 had flown the 39-minute flight south from Anchorage and touched down about 8 a.m. Thursday at Kodiak Benny Benson State Airport During the landing rollout at least two deer were crossing the runway and unfortunately, did not survive, Alaska Airlines said in a statement. 'An inspection found damage to the aircraft's main landing gear that will require repairs in Kodiak,' a spokesperson said.'Passenger flights to and from Kodiak were then canceled for the rest of Thursday and guests were rebooked on other flights.' Air traffic control audio from recorded the pilots noticing animals as they came in for landing. 'There is deer on the runway,' the pilot told air traffic control shortly after he was cleared to land, according to audio from 'Roger, do you have an idea of where they are at currently,' the tower responded. 'The intersection,' the pilot responded. The airport closed the runway for a short time while crews cleared the remains, finding at least two carcasses. The plane was able to taxi and park without further incident. No passengers or crew were injured in the incident, the airline said. 'The pilots need to come down and look at this, if you can just give them a shout and they can come – yeah,' an airport worker on the ground told the tower in the LiveATC recording. The plane involved remains at Kodiak and has not flown since the strike, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Aircraft collide with animals every day at airports across the country, with more than 22,000 strikes reported last year alone, according to the U.S. FAA's wildlife strike database. Planes at Kodiak Airport hit animals five times last year, all of them birds, including two bald eagles. Across the U.S. last year, planes hit deer more than two dozen times. In 2024, the database also includes planes colliding with three alligators in Florida, a mongoose in Hawaii, a badger in North Dakota and numerous coyotes, bats, skunks and opossums. Air India plane skids off runway and busts three tires on landing at Mumbai

India plane skidded off a runway and burst three of its tires as it came in to land in Mumbai on Monday. The plane, an Airbus A320, suffered damage to the underside of an engine, forcing the runway at Mumbai International Airport to shut down amid heavy rain in the region. Air India flight AI2744, which had flown from the Indian city of Kochi, lost control and veered off the airport's main runway onto an unpaved area before coming to a stop on a taxiway. Photos of the plane showed significant damage to the outermost part of the engine, as well as clumps of wet grass lodged into its wing. A spokesperson for Air India said: 'Flight AI2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai on 21 July 2025, experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion after touchdown. 'The aircraft taxied safely to the gate and all passengers and crew members have since disembarked. The aircraft has been grounded for checks. 'The safety of passengers and crew remain our top priority.' Mumbai International Airport said in a statement that its primary runway suffered 'minor damages' during the incident. The airport added that a backup runway has now been 'activated' to allow planes to arrive and depart. Air India is already facing heavy scrutiny following the release of a preliminary report into the deadly crash of one of its Boeing 787 Dreamliners in the Indian city of Ahmedabad last month, killing 260 people.

Air India plane veers off runway in horror landing with three tyres burst & engine damaged in latest terrifying incident

AN AIR India plane skidded off the runway and sustained damage as it landed at Mumbai International Airport amid heavy rain on Monday. Three tyres on the Airbus A320 burst, the underside of an engine was damaged and the runway had to be shut, according to reports. 4 4 4 On the day of the plane's dodgy landing, the suburbs of Mumbai were drenched in 4.5 inches of rain, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Air India flight AI2744, which had flown from the Indian city of Kochi, veered off the main runway onto an unpaved area before coming to a stop at a taxiway, Times of India reports. The outer casing of the plane's engine - known as the cowling - was damaged and three tyres burst, the newspaper adds. TV footage from NDTV and India Today reveals a number of dents on the cowling. An Air India spokesperson said: 'Flight AI2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai on 21 July 2025, experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion after touchdown. "The aircraft taxied safely to the gate and all passengers and crew members have since disembarked. The aircraft has been grounded for checks. "The safety of passengers and crew remain our top priority." The Mumbai airport said in a statement that there were "minor damages reported to the airport's primary runway" as a result of a "runway excursion". It said that a secondary runway had been "activated" to ensure operational continuity. Though the Mumbai airport has two intersecting runways, only one operates at a time - making it effectively a single-runway airport and one of the busiest in the world. All passengers and crew were safe following the incident, the airport added. It comes as Air India has faced scrutiny after a Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed in the Indian city of Ahmedabad last month and killed 260 people. All but one of the 242 passengers and crew died, with Vishwash Ramesh, 40, the only survivor. Another 19 people were killed on the ground in Ahmedabad. A 15-page preliminary report into the crash, released by Indian authorities, indicates switches to the engines' fuel supplies were moved from the "RUN" position to "CUTOFF". "The Engine N1 and N2 began to decrease from their take-off values as the fuel supply to the engines was cut off," the report said. This may have triggered a loss of thrust, which resulted in the jet crashing into a medical college.

Watch ‘scary as hell' landing at ‘dangerous' holiday airport as plane packed with Brits barrels & BOUNCES in high winds

THIS is the heart-stopping moment a packed holiday plane is buffeted from side to side by strong gusts of wind as it tries to land at Madeira Airport. It came on a day of travel chaos for British tourists attempting to reach and leave the popular holiday island. 5 5 5 At least 49 flights - 26 arrivals and 23 departures - were reportedly cancelled yesterday as the adverse weather conditions caused major problems for a second day running. Angry British tourists took to social media into the early hours of this morning to complain they had been left stranded without food and accommodation. And video footage of a Marabu Airlines A320 being tossed around like a toy as it came in to land at the airport, officially called the Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport, showed the difficulties pilots faced. Madeira has a repuation of challenging landing conditions due to its high crosswinds - and has been named as one of the world's most dangerous airports, though accidents are rare. One social media user commenting on the plane's approach and landing said today: 'This is crazy. I already have a knot in my lower neck just from watching.' Another, thought to have been a passenger on the plane, said: 'Landing in Madeira had to be one of the worst moments in my life. 'That airport is as scary as hell. 'I felt the plane moving non-stop and the landing was so bad, God.' She went on to say: 'I get it when people say it's one of the most dangerous airports because IT'S TRUE,' prompting a local to respond: 'Imagine how us living in Madeira must fell when we have to travel. Heart-stopping moment flames erupt from airborne 153-passenger American Airlines flight as pilot makes eerie disclosure 'We pray every time so everything goes well.' The first flight said to have been cancelled yesterday was coming from London. An 11.45am flight scheduled to leave for London was also among those cancelled. Ryanair and easyJet were among the airlines affected. Island newspapers described yesterday as a 'nightmare day' for travellers. Some planes are said to have managed to fly over Madeira for a few minutes before being diverted to other airports including the one on neighbouring island Porto Santo, Lisbon, Faro and even Tenerife. A furious British Airways passenger trying to get back to Gatwick took to social media in the early hours of this morning to complain: 'I am currently stranded at Madeira Airport with no food, no hotel, and no updates on when the next flight to Gatwick will depart. 'Is this truly the level of service you aim to provide your customers?' 5 5 The X user, who described himself as the owner of limintonstudio, later added in a message to BA: 'Airport staff couldn't even offer me a mattress to sleep on, as they were only accommodating easyJet and Ryanair passengers." There was no immediate response from the airline. A Portuguese passenger told news channel SIC around 400 to 500 people had been forced to sleep at the airport. She said no mattresses had been provided, adding: 'No-one helped us or informed us of anything and there was no food available.'
