Lieferando to cut 2,000 food delivery jobs in Germany
Food delivery service Lieferando said on Thursday it plans to lay off around 2,000 couriers in Germany starting at the end of the year, many of them in Hamburg. The reduction amounts to roughly 20% of the company's entire fleet, said Lieferando, which is part of the Dutch multinational Just Eat Takeaway group. The reason for the cuts is a shift in the company's delivery model: going forward, it will increasingly rely on subcontractors for so-called "last-mile" delivery. "The competitive landscape and the market are changing faster and more fundamentally than ever," said Lennard Neubauer, Lieferando's Germany chief, in an interview with dpa. "Customers expect reliable service and short delivery times." In some areas, this can no longer be guaranteed under the current set-up, he said. In particular, Lieferando will partner with specialized logistics firms to handle deliveries in smaller markets such as Wiesbaden, Lübeck and Bochum, Neubauer added. The same approach will be taken in Hamburg, which because of the city's size will be hit especially hard. Lieferando points out that working with subcontractors is common practice in the market, saying rivals such as Uber Eats and Wolt also operate this way. Many of their riders work as freelancers, a setup that labour advocates say can lead to exploitative conditions. Lieferando's approach of employing riders directly had long been welcomed by labour representatives, making the backlash to this partial outsourcing all the more likely. Germany's Food, Beverages and Catering Union has spent years pushing for a collective agreement for Lieferando employees, including a minimum wage of €15 ($17) per hour. With parts of the delivery business now moving to third-parties, the union will likely find it more difficult to fight for uniform working conditions. Solve the daily Crossword

Newest Amazon facility on the Western Slope going in next to Montrose Regional Airport
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) – Construction has started for the latest Amazon facility on the Western Slope. A last-mile facility recently opened up near Grand Junction's regional airport and now, Montrose will soon have its own last-mile facility. The whole purpose of an Amazon last-mile facility is to make it easier to transport Amazon products to cities not near a major hub, like Denver, which is why the location next to a regional airport is ideal, because those airports serve the same purpose. Amazon bought the nearly 7.8-Acre plot of land from the Montrose Economic Development Corporation for almost 2.2 million dollars back in late March, but construction is finally underway. The project will bring both full-time and part-time job opportunities to the Montrose area. The buyer of the site was a secret until after the agreement was made due to confidentiality provisions in the contract. And while it's not a massive fulfillment center like you'd see over in Denver, these last-mile facilities serve just about the same purpose for mid-sized communities like we see here on the Western Slope. Sam Altman-backed Coco Robotics raises $80M
In Brief Los Angeles-based Coco Robotics, a startup building last-mile delivery robots, announced it raised $80 million on Wednesday. The funding round included angel investors Sam Altman and Max Altman, both returning investors, in addition to VC firms like Pelion Venture Partners and Offline Ventures, among others. This brings the company's total funding to more than $120 million. The company last raised a $36 million Series A round in 2021. Coco's zero-emissions robots can hold 90 liters worth of groceries or goods and have made more than 500,000 deliveries since they hit the streets in 2020, the company said. It says it works with national retailers including Subway, Wingstop and Jack in the Box. Sam Altman's financial interest in Coco is clear. While he's personally providing capital to the company, OpenAI apparently gets a benefit too. Coco announced a partnership with OpenAI in March which allows Coco to use OpenAI while the AI company gains the real-world data the robots collect to train its models. The company was founded in 2020 by Brad Squicciarini and Zach Rash. TechCrunch reached out to Coco for more information.
