Fire at Surrey e-bike store fueled by lithium-ion batteries
Video shows a massive plume of smoke coming from a fire in Surrey on June 28, 2025. (Image credit: Kalvin Angulo) A fire that broke out Saturday at a Surrey business that sells e-bikes and e-scooters was difficult to get under control because of the presence of lithium-ion batteries, which fueled the blaze. Firefighters were called to EV Revolution on 104th Avenue near 199 street around 7 p.m. for reports of smoke coming from the business, according to Surrey Fire Service Asst. Chief Mike McNamara. While there's no indication that the batteries caused the fire, McNamara said their presence made conditions challenging for crews. 'They got into the building and the smoke was extremely thick, so it was difficult to navigate in the building to find the seat of the fire,' he explained. 'It got to the point where the batteries that were part of the e-scooters, the bikes, were starting to catch fire which was creating a significant amount of heat and smoke. So, eventually they had to pull out and just make a defensive attack.' Fires involving lithium-ion batteries are more intense and more difficult to extinguish, which meant Saturday's blaze took more than six hours to get under control. No one was injured although one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. The cause of the blaze is under investigation, according to McNamara. Fire departments across Metro Vancouver have issued warnings about an increase in lithium-ion batteries as e-bikes and scooters have increased in popularity. McNamara said this incident presents an opportunity for people to reacquaint themselves with the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries and what can be done to prevent fires. More information about lithium-ion battery safety can be found online.

Warning after battery fire damages bin lorry in Rufford
Fire crews have warned people to dispose of rechargeable batteries carefully after a fire badly damaged a bin lorry in alarm was raised at about 11:30 BST on Tuesday when smoke was seen coming from the vehicle as it passed through from Edwinstowe and Warsop, with additional support from Newark and Blidworth, responded, but the lorry suffered severe prompted station manager Charlotte Weatherall-Smith to warn that putting lithium-ion batteries in domestic waste bins posed "a real danger to the public". There are no reports of any injuries to the bin lorry Weatherall-Smith said: "Incidents like this highlight the serious risks associated with disposing of lithium-ion batteries."These batteries, which can be found in smartphones, laptops, vapes and e-scooters, can ignite when damaged, posing a real danger to the public."We urge people to check with their local council or recycling centre for safe battery disposable options. "By disposing of batteries responsibly, we can help prevent future incidents from happening."

Sino-Moroccan COBCO begins producing EV battery materials
RABAT, June 25 (Reuters) - Sino-Moroccan company COBCO said on Wednesday it had begun production at a plant for lithium-ion battery components in Jorf Lasfar, 125 kilometres (78 miles) south of Casablanca. COBCO is a joint venture between Moroccan investment fund Al Mada and CNGR Advanced Materials, a battery materials producer. Morocco's proximity to Europe, automotive industry, free trade deals, and available phosphates and cobalt make it attractive to Chinese EV battery makers. In a first phase, the plant will produce two key components for lithium-ion batteries: nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) and precursor cathodes (pCAM), COBCO said in a statement. The materials will be produced from nickel, cobalt and manganese, which are key components for EV batteries and stationary energy storage, it said. Ultimately, the $2 billion plant targets an annual capacity equivalent to 70 gigawatt-hours, enough to equip one million vehicles, a source close to the project told Reuters. The plant aims to reach an annual production capacity of 120,000 tonnes of NMC precursors and 60,000 tonnes of lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cathodes. The LFP cathodes production will start "as soon as a regional LFP battery ecosystem emerges," the company said. COBCO's plant marks a first production start in Morocco's push to be a hub for the EV battery supply chain, as it seeks to adapt its automotive sector to EV industry requirements. Sino-European EV battery maker Gotion High Tech is building Africa's first gigafactory in Morocco, for a total investment of $6.5 billion, with production expected in the third quarter of 2026. Chinese auto battery manufacturers Hailiang and Shinzoom announced last year plans to set up two separate plants near Tangier, which would produce key EV battery ingredients: copper and anodes respectively. Chinese electric battery maker BTR New Material Group is also planning to produce key component cathodes in Tangier. Morocco is home to Stellantis ( opens new tab and Renault ( opens new tab vehicle production plants, and reported a 6.3% increase in automotive sector exports to a record 157 billion dirhams ($17 billion) in 2024, according to official figures.

Lithium-ion batteries sparked Bronx fire that gutted 3 homes, FDNY confirms
The FDNY has confirmed a fire that tore through three homes in the Bronx over the weekend was sparked by lithium-ion batteries. Multiple people were injured, including several firefighters. Mayor Eric Adams and fire officials toured the intense damage left behind Monday after the FDNY said three homes caught fire along Devoe Terrace on Sunday. Latest on the investigation The FDNY said there were five lithium-ion-powered devices outside the home and at least two were charging when the fire broke out. While fire officials say their investigation is still ongoing, at least one of the lithium-ion batteries involved was uncertified, CBS News New York's Zinnia Maldonado reported. "It is traumatizing, not only to the residents of both houses on the left and right, but for the neighbors on the block," Adams said. One man who did not want to be identified lives next door. "When I came out, the fire spread so fast. There were four bikes right here," the man said. The FDNY said 14 individuals suffered minor injuries -- 12 first responders and two residents. An additional firefighter was taken to the hospital in critical condition due to smoke inhalation but is now stable and in good spirits. NYC has seen massive drop in lithium-ion battery fire deaths Adams said deaths due to fires sparked by lithium-ion batteries in the city dropped 67% between 2023 and 2024. "We are at zero this year. However, last night could have been the first one," FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker said. The FDNY confirmed that at least one resident inside the home was disabled and utilized motorized scooters. Another next-door neighbor said e-bikes were constantly parked on the front porch. "We decided to evacuate. The smoke was coming in. By the time we came out, there was another explosion. I guess they had a lot of e-bikes sitting on their porch," the neighbor said. The Red Cross is now assisting the individuals displaced along Devoe Terrace. The FDNY said that one firefighter still in the hospital is now stable and remains in good spirits.
