Restored spiegeltent back in action for Wynnum Fringe festival

Once abandoned in an outback Queensland town, the Augathella Spiegeltent is set to hold more than 110 live performances for the sixth annual Wynnum Fringe festival. The restored circus tent is breathing new life into the festival scene on Brisbane's Bayside as music and hospitality venues continue to close. The venue is hosting the Wynnum Fringe for the second time and thousands of spectators are expected to attend the festival's three-week run. Event founder Tom Oliver began the renovation project in 2023 to give performers the increasingly rare opportunity to share their craft. "To be able to give hundreds of artists the chance to perform in front of audience members, the chance to get paid, and thousands of audience members to come into a space and experience live art — there's not many words to describe it," he said. Until 2013 the tent was a roaming venue for parties and events in the state before it was left to languish in Augathella, 750 kilometres west of Brisbane. Mr Oliver is hoping to take it back on the road to give other homegrown artists the opportunity to perform under its roof. "We're looking for places interstate to take it next year, but it's always going to be the home of Wynnum Fringe," he said. Relocating and restoring the tent led to an unexpected relationship between Augathella and Wynnum. In May Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and Murwey Shire Mayor Shaun Radnedge announced the two were sister suburbs. This year's Wynnum Fringe will celebrate the partnership with the theme of mateship. "This has been a really remarkable journey, where a tiny town in west Queensland and a suburban town in Brisbane … have worked together to relocate a 400-seat live performance venue and bring it back to life," Mr Oliver said. A cherished Queensland tradition is being revived to celebrate this new connection between the bush and the bay. The Wynnum Fringe is throwing its first bachelor and spinster ball, which will be hosted by ABC Radio Brisbane. Festivities will start at 4pm on Saturday, July 5, and will be headlined by country music artist Brooke Schubert. The spiegeltent is open for business but the restoration is only half complete. Mr Oliver has been running a crowdfunding campaign to bring the travelling venue back to life. In the last few months he and his team have replaced the floors, roof, and purchased a new stage just in time for this year's performances.

Apple Music to open a studio in Culver City

Apple Music on Monday said it's opening a three-story studio in Culver City this summer that will have a 4,000-square-foot soundstage for live performances and fan events. 'With this new studio, we are furthering our commitment to creating a space for artists to create, connect, and share their vision,' said Rachel Newman, Apple Music's co-head, in a statement. The facility spans more than 15,000 square feet and includes two radio studios for live interviews and performances, a spatial audio mixing room, booths for songwriting and podcasting, and rooms to help artists create content, Apple said in a post about the studio. The facility is located in Culver City in the Hayden Tract neighborhood. Los Angeles architect Eric Owen Moss, known for his distinctive and sculptural structures throughout Los Angeles, designed the building that houses the new studio. Apple didn't provide an exact date for the studio's opening. The new space shows how Apple, headquartered in Cupertino, Calif., has been expanding its real estate footprint in Southern California as it pushes further into the entertainment industry. The tech giant is building a new office complex on the border of Culver City and Los Angeles that is expected to house the company's television streaming service Apple TV+. Read more: Expansive offices for Apple are rising in Culver City As technology, including the frenzy around artificial intelligence, continues to reshape the way musicians and filmmakers tell stories, tech companies are emphasizing that they want to support creativity. Last year, Apple apologized after an iPad Pro ad that showed a hydraulic press crushing musical instruments such as a piano and other creative tools before the thin device was revealed, sparked backlash. While the commercial showcased Apple's thinnest product, some critics viewed it as a symbol of technology destroying creativity. Apple said the new studio will serve as the anchor for a global network of creative hubs that are already open in New York, Tokyo, Berlin, Paris and Nashville. The company said it plans to open more studios soon. Apple also announced that as part of its 10-year anniversary celebration, Apple Music Radio starting on July 1 will start counting down the service's top 500 most-streamed songs. Apple Music is also releasing a way for its listeners to see and stream the songs they've played the most since they joined the service in a "Replay All Time" playlist. Former workers at Philadelphia's World Cafe Live allege unfair treatment, late paychecks

Former employees of World Cafe Live in Philadelphia are speaking out after walking off the job mid-show last week. They blame a leadership shakeup for creating chaos, claiming mismanagement and a failure to pay workers on time. Since 2004, World Cafe Live has been a home to emerging and established artists in Philadelphia. The music venue and restaurant has hosted more than 500 live performances a year. Leadership changed in April with new CEO Joe Callahan coming on board. Several employees who have been protesting what they call "unfair treatment" outside the venue were let go following their walkout last week. Former employees allege "an unacceptable level of hostility and mismanagement," and say workers weren't paid on time. Several shows at the University City venue were canceled this week amid the ongoing labor tensions. Callahan says this boils down to miscommunication and a failure of former leadership. He said the venue was struggling financially. He said any pay discrepancies have been corrected. "There wasn't an efficient handoff to where we were addressing the issues at hand based on the financial strain on the organization and based on the improvements and the [adaptation] … to get it to a breakeven standpoint," Callahan said. "So I think it was all led out of fear that was derived from unknowns that they weren't kept informed." World Cafe Live workers are not unionized. One former employee said it pains her to no longer work at the venue. "I wish that I was inside," one former employee said Tuesday. "There were shows that I was scheduled to work over the next few weeks, and I've worked every single week throughout other obligations, other commitments … We all want this place to survive, the reason why we're outside is that we don't think it can under these circumstances, under Joe Callahan." As for artists who have canceled performances, Callahan said that's also blowback from misrepresentation of information, and the venue continues to receive inquiries for new shows.
