The First Descendant Breakthrough Demo Out Now On All Platforms
The First Descendent Today, the demo for the big new Breakthrough update went live for The First Descendant across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. NEXON will keep the demo live until August 6 and gives players a sneak peek at what's coming in the new update. You can pre-register for the upcoming content drop through August 7 (when the full update launches) to claim some exclusive rewards and bonuses. Players that finish the demo before the update is out will receive their own bonus rewards as well, including a Spoils Box and a Crystallization Catalyst, in addition to titles and paint styles if you participate in the First Look Demo Event of the new region, Axion Plains. The First Descendant—Breakthrough For those unaware, The First Descendant is one of the more prominent and reasonably popular free-to-play live service looter-shooters on the market from the past couple of years. You'll complete missions, team up with folks, shoot a bunch of bad guys, and collect a ton of gear and upgrade materials, then do it all again for dozens or hundreds of hours. The Breakthrough update sounds like it should be a pretty massive addition to the game, as it includes tons of content like the new Axion Plains field, the new hover bike vehicle, a Colossus Field raid event, a new Descendent, and even a Nier: Automata crossover. I haven't played The First Descendant actively in a long time myself, but I did give it a go for a few weeks when it first launched and the gameplay loop is really strong. I just typically prefer my games with swords and magic rather than sci-fi guns and bullets. Typically. I did really like what I played, though, and probably would have stuck around longer if I'd had a few friends to check it out with. But when you're a 30-something married guy with kids who rarely plays games just for fun anymore, that's often a hard hill to climb. If you're eagerly anticipating the big new content drop coming soon for The First Descendant, this demo is an awesome way to satiate that appetite ever-so-slightly over the next few weeks. 'Borderlands 4' Nets Nintendo Switch 2 Version A Month After Main Release
Gearbox Entertainment's upcoming looter-shooter sequel, Borderlands 4 , has now landed a Nintendo Switch 2 version, with the game headed to the hybrid console on 3 October 2025, just one month after its main release. Taking to X/Twitter, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford announced the game's Nintendo Switch 2 launch date in his signature casual style, reminiscent of his previous reveal of the title's early release. In the clip, he addressed fan concerns that the Switch 2 version would not arrive anytime soon due to the lack of pre-order announcements, and cheekily set up the notion that it would not release this year, only to drop the reveal of its October launch right at the end. The announcement of Borderlands 4's Switch 2 launch date within the year will certainly be great news for fans eager to take the mayhem with them on the go, especially considering Gearbox's previous statements that the version would arrive later than other platforms. This was in part due to the team's decision to make a dedicated Switch 2 version of the game over a simple port, with Pitchford explaining that the hybrid console was 'a joy to work with' and that it was 'pretty astonishing how perfect [the] platform is for Borderlands 4 .' With Borderlands 4's early launch date of 12 September 2025 on the PlayStation, Xbox and PC, things are already looking pretty promising for the upcoming shooter sequel, which looks set to ramp up the mayhem fans know and love, with Pitchford and Gearbox Global Creative Executive Officer Andrew Reiner explaining during a previous interview with Geek Culture how the team is bringing the series back to its roots while expanding on core concepts. Now, with an early-than-expected release date on the Nintendo Switch 2, the game will also attract a brand new legion of fans when Borderlands 4 drops on the hybrid console on 3 October 2025. Major PS5 and Xbox game sequel ‘cancelled' without warning as fans call axing ‘criminal' and blast ‘brutal cliffhanger'
A LONG-awaited sequel to a hit PS5 and Xbox game has been axed without warning — leaving fans gutted. Outriders 2, the follow-up to the 2021 sci-fi shooter, was reportedly deep in development before publisher Square Enix pulled the plug. The game was being made by Polish developer People Can Fly and had the working title Project Gemini. Reports claim the decision came from Square Enix and was beyond the developer's control. It's not clear why the game was cancelled, but it's another blow to an already struggling games industry. Outriders launched in 2021 and got off to a strong start thanks to its day-one release on Xbox Game Pass. The looter-shooter picked up a loyal fanbase and Square Enix even said it could become their 'next big franchise'. Despite that, the game failed to make a profit in its first year. That may have raised doubts about the future of the series — and now it seems those fears were justified. According to sources, Outriders 2 had already reached the motion capture stage, suggesting it was well underway. Motion capture is used to bring characters and cutscenes to life, and often takes place in the later stages of production. However, some insiders say the sequel wasn't quite as far along as others claim. Either way, the cancellation came as a shock — and has sparked backlash from fans. Gamers have taken to Reddit to vent their frustration. One said: 'Still maintain that this game had the best crafting system for a looter shooter. Had some really fun builds when we played this.' Another added: 'That's a bummer. I had fun with the first one but 3-person co-op is just such a weird number.' A third said: 'I hope it gets resurrected somehow as I really, really loved the first one.' Many fans are also angry that the first game ended on a massive cliffhanger — one that may now never be resolved. Some even called the decision 'criminal' and accused the publisher of giving up on a story they were heavily invested in. This is the second known game to be cancelled at People Can Fly, who are now focused on other projects. The studio is currently working on several titles, including helping out on Gears of War: E-Day. They previously developed Gears of War: Judgement for Xbox 360, so they're no strangers to the franchise. As for Outriders, its future looks uncertain. With the sequel shelved and no official word from Square Enix, fans are bracing themselves for the worst. It's not the first time a big-name game has been scrapped — and likely won't be the last. SEGA shocked fans in 2023 when it cancelled Hyenas, a flashy team-based shooter from Total War devs Creative Assembly. The game had already been through public testing, but was axed just before release, alongside a wave of job cuts. Over at PlayStation, The Last of Us Online was quietly shelved by Naughty Dog. The multiplayer spin-off was meant to expand the world of the hit franchise, but after years in development limbo, the studio admitted in late 2023 it had decided to pull the plug and focus on single-player titles instead. Xbox gamers were left disappointed years earlier when Scalebound, a dragon-riding action adventure, was cancelled by Microsoft. Despite early gameplay footage and a growing fanbase, the 2017 cancellation blamed development struggles and high ambitions that proved too difficult to deliver. 2

Borderlands 4 stirs controversy amid price talk
Borderlands 4 may be 2025's most anticipated looter shooter title, so hopefully its studio, Gearbox, will try its best to remain tight-lipped for the next few months. A few weeks ago, when asked online about Borderlands 4 possibly being a US$80 title, chief executive officer Randy Pitchford said that: (a) it's 2K Games' call, not his, and (b) true fans will find a way to buy it if it came to that. That's a rather tone-deaf response, especially amid ongoing economic instability and upheaval in the games industry. What is perplexing is that Randy Pitchford gave a much better answer about pricing a month ago. We're not sure who handled Pitchford's Twitter account, or if the man himself truly forgot what he said a month earlier, but it is a bad look for him and Gearbox. This isn't the first controversy he has gone through. Online, you'll find longstanding allegations, including a story about him allegedly leaving a USB containing sexually explicit material at a Medieval Times restaurant, stories of him and his company siphoning money off Sega meant for an Aliens game (which went to Borderlands 2), and lying about the state of the game pre-launch, and the mishandling of Duke Nukem Forever. And his involvement in 2024's worst movie, the Borderlands live-action film adaptation. Even with the possible success of Borderlands 4, the internet truly never forgets. Which is why, more than ever, if Gearbox needs to truly succeed with its upcoming looter shooter at launch and beyond, publisher 2K Games must manage Pitchford's public presence more carefully. Short Beats The Nintendo Switch 2 will be out in Malaysia on July 3, 2025. The console will cost RM2,488. China's NetEase Games has announced a new triple-A, single-player action title called Blood Message. The game will be out for PC and consoles, though no release date or year has been announced. Despite controversy from its CEO, Gearbox Software's upcoming looter shooter title Borderlands 4 will not cost over US$80. FromSoftware has launched post-launch downloadable content for its roguelite action title Elden Ring: Nightreign. Longtime VR rhythm game Beat Saber will no longer receive new content and support on PlayStation VR and PlayStation VR2. Other versions of the title will still get support, though.
