Fredericton police order review of procedures that resulted in stay of proceedings in major cases

In the wake of two major cases receiving stay of proceedings due to 'insurmountable evidentiary' issues, the Fredericton Police Force has ordered an independent review of its major crime services' procedures and practices. Last month, Chief Gary Forward said the criminal matter related to the 2021 death of Corey Christopher Markey received a stay of proceedings due to an 'error initiated, discovered and subsequently reported to the Crown by the Fredericton Police Force.' 'We cannot begin to gauge or comprehend the profound effect this will have on the victims' families and those closest to the investigations,' Forward said in a news release. 'It is, however, our obligation to take full responsibility for the issue and apologize for what has led to these stays of proceedings.' In a separate news release on Wednesday, Forward said the 2022 death of Brandon Donelan also received a stay of proceedings. 'We take full responsibility and accountability for the circumstances that led to this outcome,' Forward said. 'As part of our acknowledgement and commitment to public trust, we are taking immediate steps to examine the error caused on our part and to prevent a reoccurrence.' The police force has appointed Ontario-based lawyer and investigator Ian D. Scott to conduct the independent review into the major case management services. The review will start on July 17 and is expected to be finished by the end of the year. Scott was the director of Ontario's special investigations unit from 2008 to 2013, according to a news release. The findings of the review will be released to the public. For more New Brunswick news, visit our dedicated provincial page.

The injured man was transported to hospital and police are investigating the incident. Authorities have not released any details about the nature of the man's injuries, the weapon the suspect was wielding or whether any charges are being pursued.
