New study reveals how many people are using AI for companionship — and the results are surprising
As AI has gotten smarter and more conversational, many would have you believe that people are turning en masse to chatbots for relationships, therapy and friendship. However, that doesn't appear to be the case. In a new report from Anthropic, the makers of Claude AI, they've revealed some key information on how people are using chatbots. Analyzing 4.5 million conversations, the AI company painted a picture of how people use them. Anthropic claims these conversations were fed through a system that inputs multiple layers of anonymity to avoid breaks in privacy. While the research produces a long list of findings, the key thing to note is that just 2.9% of Claude AI interactions are emotive conversations. Companionship and roleplay relationships made up just 0.5%. Anthropic found that, for the vast majority of people, their AI tool was mainly used for work tasks and content creation. Of those seeking affection-based conversations, 1.13% used it for coaching, and only 0.05% used it for romantic conversations. This aligns with similar results to ChatGPT. A study by OpenAI and MIT found that a limited number of people use AI chatbots for any kind of emotional engagement. Just like with Anthropic, the vast majority of people on ChatGPT use it for work or content creation. Even in low numbers, there is a fierce debate over whether AI should be used for these roles. 'The emotional impacts of AI can be positive: having a highly intelligent, understanding assistant in your pocket can improve your mood and life in all sorts of ways,' Anthropic states in their research blog post. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. 'But AIs have in some cases demonstrated troubling behaviors, like encouraging unhealthy attachment, violating personal boundaries, and enabling delusional thinking.' They are quick to point out that Claude isn't designed for emotional support and connection, but that they wanted to analyse its ability to perform this task anyway. In the analysis, Anthropic found that those who did use it typically dealt with deeper issues like mental health and loneliness. Others used it for coaching, aiming to better themselves in different skills or personality aspects. The report offers a balanced assessment of the situation, showing that there can be success in this area, but also detailing the risks, especially where Claude AI rarely steps in and offers endless encouragement — a point that Anthropic acknowledges as a risky topic to address.

It's confirmed! Ammy Virk not replacing Diljit Dosanjh in Border 2: Just speculation, no call yet, says Ammy's team
Several reports suggest that the makers of Border 2 are considering dropping singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh from the film following controversy over casting Pakistani actor Hania Aamir in Sardaar Ji 3. However, we exclusively learnt that there's no change in the casting, as half the film has been shot. While some reports also suggested that actor-singer Ammy Virk would be replacing Diljit in Border 2, we have exclusively learnt that it's not true. Diljit Dosanjh; (right) Ammy Virk(Photos: Instagram) A source from Ammy's team tells us, 'These are just speculations. We haven't got any call from anyone as of now.' Diljit is facing the heat for co-starring with Pakistani actor Hania Aamir in his upcoming movie, Sardaar Ji 3. While the film won't be released in India, it is slated for release outside the domestic market, including Pakistan. Amid all this, film bodies are writing to filmmakers, actors and the government, urging them to drop him from upcoming Hindi releases, including Border 2. However, we reported that there are no plans to replace Diljit. A highly-placed source close to the production said, 'There is no plan to replace or remove Diljit from Border 2. His casting was confirmed nearly nine months ago, long before the recent unfortunate incidents. Nearly half the film has already been shot, and any replacement at this stage would be logistically unfeasible." On June 25, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees had written letters addressed to Bhushan Kumar (co-producer of Border 2) and actor Sunny Deol, asking them to disassociate from their collaboration with Diljit. However, both of them are yet to reply to the letters. When we reached out to the makers of Border 2 — Nidhi Dutta and Bhushan — our efforts weren't met with a response at the time of going to press. Meanwhile, on Friday, FWICE wrote a letter urging Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah to withdraw the permission granted for the shooting of the film Border 2 at the National Defence Academy (NDA) premises in Pune. Sources claim that the film's team may issue a statement soon.

Sardaar Ji 3 row: ‘No plans yet to remove Diljit Dosanjh from Border 2'
Diljit Dosanjh continues to find himself in hot water for going ahead with his film Sardaar Ji 3's release overseas, which features Pakistani actor Hania Amir. The move had sparked backlash online with film bodies demanding a ban on Diljit. Now, there's been growing demand for Diljit to be removed from the upcoming war drama Border 2. Diljit Dosanjh However, we have learnt from highly placed sources on the film that, as of now, there is no such development. The source says, 'There is no plan to replace or remove Diljit from Border 2. The announcement about his casting was made almost nine months back, before any of the unfortunate situations had happened. Almost 40-50 percent of the film's shooting has already been done, so making any change at this point is not possible.' On June 25, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees had written letters addressed to Bhushan Kumar (co-producer of Border 2) and actor Sunny Deol, asking them to disassociate from their collaboration with Diljit. However, both of them are yet to reply to the letters. When we reached out to the makers of Border 2 — Nidhi Dutta and Bhushan — our efforts weren't met with a response at the time of going to press. While Neeru has not issued a formal statement, her actions have fuelled speculation about her stance on the matter. Guru Randhawa deactivates X account after cryptic post on Diljit While artistes like Mika Singh have openly objected to Hania's casting and the decision to release Sardaar Ji 3 overseas, Guru Randhawa too took to X on Thursday to drop a cryptic post that many interpreted as a veiled dig at fellow artist Diljit amid the Sardaar Ji 3 row. "'Lakh pardesi hoyieee, Apna desh nhi bhandi daa. Jehre mulk da khayie, us da bura nhi mangi da,' read a part of Guru's post. Bumper orders for Xiaomi‘s new SUV heighten threat to Tesla
[SHANGHAI] Exceptionally strong initial orders for Xiaomi's YU7 electric sport utility vehicle sent shares in the automotive newcomer to a record high on Friday and fanned speculation that Tesla may have to cut prices to fight back. The company received 289,000 orders for the YU7 - only its second vehicle and one that undercuts Tesla's Model Y in price by nearly 4 per cent - in its first hour on sale, according to CEO Lei Jun. That was more than three times the level for its SU7 electric sedan launched in March last year and easily exceeded market expectations of around 100,000 in orders. Tesla's Model Y, China's best-selling SUV, will likely lose more market share, analysts said. That would only rub salt into the wound for the US automaker which has steadily lost ground to domestic EV makers that have won over consumers with snazzy new models. Xiaomi's SU7, for example, has outsold Tesla's Model 3 in China on a monthly basis since December. Sign Up Sign Up The YU7 is priced from 253,500 yuan (S$45,100) which is 'slightly below that of Tesla's Model Y but it offers much better specs and performance,' said analysts at Jefferies. Citi analysts said Tesla may have to cut prices further, offer its 'Full Self-Driving' driver assistance software for free and offer more financing incentives if it is to successfully compete with Xiaomi. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Its share of the Chinese EV market has fallen from a peak of 15 per cent in 2020 to 10 per cent last year and then again to 7.6 per cent for the first months of 2025. Xiaomi's shares shot 8 per cent higher in early trade to an all-time high but later pared gains to be up 3 per cent. They have more than tripled this year to value the smartphone and appliance maker at nearly US$200 billion, making the company the best performing large cap stock in Asia Pacific, according to LSEG data.
