Savannah mall shooting is one of many around US in recent years. Here's a look at others
A shooting at Oglethorpe Mall in Savannah on Wednesday evening has left the community shaken and raised concerns about violence in public shopping spaces across the nation.
Here's more about what we know.
According to Savannah News Police Department Public Information Officer Neil Penttila, officers responded to the scene just before 6:25 p.m. on July 2 following reports of gunfire inside the mall.
Authorities confirmed that four people were injured in the incident, including a juvenile. All sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
This incident is still under investigation, and according to latest reports, no arrests have been made.
This latest shooting is part of a troubling trend of violence in malls and shopping centers nationwide. Over the past few years, such incidents have grown more frequent, turning typically safe public places into scenes of panic and tragedy.
July 1, 2025: A woman is accused of fatally shooting her ex-boyfriend inside his cookie shop at a Dallas mall in what police describe as a domestic-related incident.
June 7, 2025: A man opened fire inside the Houston Galleria Mall's yellow parking garage around 1 p.m. He drove a black BMW, stopped in an entryway, and fired several shots at another car, no injuries were reported.
February, 2025 and March 2004: Two men exchanged gunfire in the Arbor Place Mall parking lot in Douglasville in February, while another person was shot multiple times in the same mall parking lot a year earlier.
May 2023: a gunman opened fire at the Allen Premium Outlets in Texas, killing nine people and injuring seven others. The shooter, later identified as Mauricio Garcia, was fatally shot by police on the scene.
July 2022: another mall shooting took place at the Greenwood Park Mall in Indiana. A man opened fire in a food court, killing three people and injuring two more. The attack ended when an armed civilian intervened, fatally shooting the gunman.
According to VOA Special Reports, the U.S. has three retail shootings in 2019 alone, in New Jersey, Texas, and Florida, totaling in 32 fatalities.
