My new REM-Fit mattress means I don't wake up when my partner gets up for work
AS someone who's at the office all day and socialising in the evenings, I have to be as comfortable as possible when my head hits the pillow. Sitting in a desk chair all day often causes me mild back pain, and I often wake up several times during the night to readjust my position. I put the REM-Fit 500 Ortho Hybrid mattress to the test to see just how much it could support my body and improve my sleep. BUY HERE It's the first mattress I've ever tried with ortho support, and I was hopeful that it would provide the back support I needed. It's very firm, which is necessary for support, and helps to correct spinal alignment. The mattress contains 200 pocket springs and REM-Fit claims there's zero motion transfer, meaning if you share your bed with a partner like I do, they shouldn't feel every movement you make during the night. It also comes with a whopping and very reassuring 15-year guarantee. The 500 Ortho Hybrid mattress is REM-Fit's second most premium mattress, and sizes range from a UK small single to super king. A mattress is a big purchase, so the 100-night trial is very welcome, and it's upgraded to 200 nights if you include a mattress protector in your purchase. I think three months is more than enough time to figure out if it's the best mattress for you, and if it isn't, you can return it for a full refund. Read on to discover the pros, cons and specs in my REM-Fit 500 Ortho Hybrid mattress review. Pros The back support is great Lessens the impact of your partner's movements during the night 200-night sleep trial is generous Cons It may be too firm for some people Temperature-regulating qualities weren't super noticeable Overall rating: 8/10 How I tested the REM-Fit 500 Ortho Hybrid mattress I slept on the REM-Fit mattress for several weeks consistently, so I could note my thoughts while I used it every night as part of my normal routine. The testing process included scenarios in which I was both sharing the mattress with my partner and sleeping alone, so I could check against the claims of zero motion transfer. Throughout my time using the mattress, I was mindful of several factors, including the comfort level, back support and pressure-relief, the edge-to-edge support and the breathability. How much does the REM-Fit 500 Ortho Hybrid mattress cost? A king-size mattress costs £699.99, which is moderately priced for a Hybrid mattress. The cheapest size, the small single, is £499.99. Who is it best for? Those who suffer from back problems or just prefer a firm and supportive mattress. It's also great for those who get woken up a lot by their partner's movement. What I loved: The support is undeniable, and while it's much firmer than others I've tried, there's no bouncing or squeaking, and it truly feels like your body is being properly cushioned. The memory foam absorbs most movement, so if you share the bed with a fidgety partner, it's less likely to disturb your sleep. What I didn't: The initial chemical smell wasn't ideal, but it disappeared within a day. BUY HERE REM-Fit 500 Ortho Hybrid mattress review: The Nitty Gritty First impressions Due to the 2000 spring count, I was expecting the mattress to be heavy, and that it was. Luckily, upon delivery, it was brought upstairs by the driver and came rolled up in a bag, which made it much easier for my partner and me to move it to the bed, but it would be difficult alone. If you were moving house and getting one delivered, having it rolled up would also be a godsend space-wise. Once I'd cut open the bag, the mattress sprung to life, so you want to make sure you open it as close to your bed frame as possible. I was instantly impressed that the mattress came with a cover on, which helps protect it. I usually use a mattress topper, but don't think that would be necessary with this. REM-Fit advises waiting 2-3 hours before using the mattress, which is when it will expand and rise to its full height. During this time, the mattress did have a slight chemical smell, but once I put bedding on it went away. Does it deliver? REM-Fit 500 Ortho Hybrid Mattress, from £499.99 BUY HERE The mattress does what it says on the tin — I was impressed to find that almost all of the claims REM-Fit made were true. Not only did I find it supportive, but it also gave me nights of uninterrupted slumber. The standout for me was not feeling my partner's movements, and it's particularly handy when we get up at different times for work. The standout for me was not feeling my partner's movements, and it's particularly handy when we get up at different times for work. I think most of that is down to the memory foam, and it makes sense as you can feel yourself sinking into it rather than just lying on top. It is without a doubt the firmest mattress I've had, but it did naturally encourage me to lie on my back, something which matches the claims that it promotes correct spinal alignment. I have to say, I can't recall noticing the temperature-regulating aspect, although some of the periods I tested it in included a heatwave, during which time nothing could cool me down. The edge-to-edge support was no lie either — considering how well the mattress supports the body and keeps it in place, I think it would be pretty difficult to roll off. I also loved that the mattress came with a cover, giving some extra padding underneath your bedding and also protecting it from wear and tear. A deal REM-Fit is running at the time of writing includes two of the brand's 400 memory foam pillows for free when you purchase a mattress — I tested one out, and it was super-bouncy and fairly comfortable. Personally. I would choose a slightly denser pillow, as I found this one slightly too springy; it felt like my head was resting on top, not sinking in. BUY HERE How much is the REM-Fit 500 Ortho Hybrid mattress? At the time of testing, the king-size that I tested retails for £699.99, while a double is £649. It's not the most expensive of its kind, and the features, which include edge support, motion isolation and pressure point relief, make it worth it, if they're all important to you. REM-Fit does have two cheaper alternatives in the range - the REM-Fit 400 Hybrid mattress starting from £399.99 and the REM-Fit 1000 Pocket Hybrid mattress starting from £349.99. However, neither of those offers orthopaedic support. REM-Fit's website is the only place you can currently buy the REM-Fit 500 Ortho Hybrid mattress. The REM-Fit 500 Ortho Hybrid mattress comes recommended, but there are options from other top brands you could consider, with similar features. Some of the most well-known names include Emma and Simba, and both have their hybrid mattresses with varying firmness. If you're looking for an affordable orthopaedic option, the is currently on sale at Dunelm with 20% off, reducing the king-size from £439 to £351.20.

The best firm mattress in 2025, tried and tested
The best firm mattresses we tested Best firm mattress: Birch Luxe Natural Best budget firm mattress: Plank by Brooklyn Bedding Firm Mattress When thinking about the best mattresses, it's easy to associate a dreamy night's rest with something plush and cloudlike. But not everyone enjoys sleeping on a mattress that's overly soft, and some might prefer something firmer. If that's you, know you're not alone. Sleeping on one of the best firm mattresses can be a therapeutic and relaxing experience for certain sleepers. They can provide support for back pain and improve alignment, and are often more comfortable for those who prefer sleeping on their backs or stomachs. To find the best firm mattress, a panel of staffers here at CNN Underscored spent more than a month sleeping on various mattresses that fall squarely in the 'firm' category. To give you an idea of how dedicated this search was, know that everyone who participated in this test tossed their old mattress in favor of these firm options. For some, it was a positive experience and, for others, not so much. Ultimately, we settled on two firm mattresses we'd recommend to anyone. Birch Luxe Natural Mattress The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress is firm yet forgiving, as it has a plush top layer that provides soft (but firm, of course) support. Our tester said it's the best mattress she's ever slept on and that it's incredibly supportive for various sleep styles and positions. Read our review Plank by Brooklyn Bedding Firm Mattress The Firm Mattress from Plank by Brooklyn Bedding is a firm sleeper's dream that our tester said perfectly threads the needle of being supportive and comfortable. It's also discounted often, making it one of the best value buys in our entire testing pool. Read our review The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress achieves the feat of being both soft and firm. We know how contradictory this sounds, but this was the main takeaway from associate testing writer Gareen Puglia after she spent over a month sleeping on it. It also helped her get some of the most comfortable nights of sleep she can remember getting. After a rather laborious setup process (the mattress is quite heavy), Puglia said she immediately plopped down on the bed and drifted off for a nap within minutes. This is despite the fact that the Birch Luxe was the firmest mattress she'd ever slept on. It was that comfortable. One of Puglia's favorite features of the Birch Luxe is how even it felt, no matter what position she slept in. She said she's one to switch from side to side throughout the night, and that there was never a time when she adjusted her position and couldn't immediately get comfortable again. She attributed this to the mattress's unique combination of being mostly firm yet with a soft, plush top. Puglia also said that she experienced some relief from back pain while sleeping on the Birch Luxe (which is understandable since firm mattresses are often better for those with symptoms of back pain). It took only three weeks of testing for Puglia to admit that she would have a hard time going back to her old mattress and that she'd become accustomed to the quality of rest she got with the Birch Luxe. That isn't to say Puglia didn't have a few nitpicks. First, when the mattress arrived, its box was moderately damaged (though, thankfully, the mattress was inside its own wrapping and unharmed). It was also extremely heavy. So much so that Puglia had to recruit the help of a few family members just to drag it inside. Its heavy weight was even more noticeable when it came time to unwrap and unfurl the mattress, which ended up being an awkward (and exhausting) experience. There were also two pillows taped to the bottom of the mattress that Puglia nearly missed during the setup process. This was a minor issue, though Puglia said she wished they had been attached to the top for better visibility. All told, the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress has been a revelation for Puglia. She reported a far better night's rest, along with the ability to fall asleep quicker at night, something that she rarely experienced with her old mattress. If you're on the hunt for a firm mattress but prefer a budget option, consider the Firm from the Brooklyn Bedding brand Plank. CNN Underscored's director of social, Stephanie Griffin, tested this mattress over several weeks and was amazed at how comfortable it was and how well it helped relieve some of her nagging back pain. But perhaps its best feature is how it's reversible, with one side being a 'Firm' side while the other is the 'Firmest.' This allows a level of versatility not often seen in the mattress market. Because you can usually find this on sale for around $1,000 (for the queen size), it's an excellent value buy for anyone shopping for a new mattress. According to Griffin, unboxing and setting up the mattress is a breeze. Hers showed up in a bit of a tattered box, but the mattress itself was in perfect condition as it was wrapped individually and vacuum sealed. The fact that it was vacuum sealed means it also immediately started to unfurl when Griffin removed the packaging. The entire process was smooth, though, as she had already set it on her bed frame before unwrapping it. After a few minutes, it was fully expanded. Griffin also reported no weird chemical smells or any design problems. After only a few weeks of sleeping on the Firm, Griffin noticed a marked improvement in her back pain, noting that aches in her upper back and stiffness in her neck had subsided considerably since she started sleeping on it. She also said her overall sleep quality improved as a result. If you want a quality firm mattress, yet don't want to spend too much more than $1,000, the Firm is an excellent option. It offers two firmness levels, is easy to set up and helped our tester achieve noticeably better sleep in just a few weeks. Testing a batch of mattresses isn't as glamorous as it sounds. The space needed to test even one mattress is more than many of CNN Underscored's NYC-based product reviewers can manage in an apartment. That's why we thought conducting a panel test on these firm mattresses was our best bet. After we chose the mattresses to test, each participant received a new firm mattress and did everything from delivery and setup to sleeping on it for several weeks. As the days and weeks passed, they considered a few specific things to determine if the mattress they had was worth purchasing. Here's everything we took note of during the testing process. Quality of delivery: How was the mattress delivered? Was the box in good shape or tattered? What condition was the mattress in? Ease of setup: Did the tester set the mattress up alone, or did they require help? Was it vacuum sealed upon arrival? What was the set-up process? Did they encounter any challenges or issues? Sleep quality: What was the experience like compared to other mattresses the tester had slept on? What did they think about the level of firmness? Did they notice any change in their sleep quality and in what ways? Value and cost-effectiveness: Is this a mattress they would want to spend their own money on? Is it worth the full sticker price, and why? Do they feel confident in recommending it as something to purchase? There are multiple levels of firmness If you prefer a firm mattress, know that there's more than just one firm option to select. Many brands offer choices like 'medium firm' or even 'luxury firm,' so it helps to dig further into a mattress's specific firmness levels to see what is best for you. According to Dr. Chelsie Rohrscheib, a neuroscientist and the head sleep researcher and consultant at the Wesper sleep clinic in New York City, a medium-firm mattress may be the best choice for anyone who experiences back pain. Rohrscheib said that medium-firm mattresses can help keep someone's spine in the correct alignment while sleeping and may even alleviate certain pressures on their back. A quality mattress won't be cheap Almost all mattresses that fall into the 'good' or 'quality' category carry a price tag that's not exactly inexpensive. But that's all right. This is something you'll be sleeping on a few hundred times per year, so it's important to consider the cost per use instead of the overall price. For instance, if you spend $2,000 on a mattress and sleep on it an average of 300 times per year for 10 years (that's 3,000 nights), your cost per use comes out to about 0.66 cents per night. And that could be on the higher end if you own the mattress longer than 10 years (which is likely for high-quality mattresses) and sleep at home more than 300 nights per year. All this is to say, don't fret about spending on a mattress. This is one of the few luxuries where spending more for something is totally reasonable. You should take your sleep seriously, as it has a major impact on many aspects of your life. And good sleep starts with sleeping on a good mattress. Pay attention to warranties and guarantees Most mattresses come with some version of a multi-night trial period. Some might be in the one-month or 30-day range, while others are longer at 100 days or more. It's smart to take advantage of these trial periods, especially considering the money you'll be spending on a mattress. Similarly, ensure that all warranties and guarantees are adequate before purchasing. A mattress should come with a multi-year warranty (some even have five- or 10-year warranties), as well as a guarantee (likely tied to the trial period mentioned above). Don't be shy to exercise the warranty or guarantee if you're not 100% satisfied with a mattress. Nectar Premier Memory Foam Mattress The Nectar Premier is a firm memory foam mattress that's great for stomach or back sleepers. It's technically 'medium-firm' but our tester reported it feeling a bit firmer than they were used our review This mattress from Nectar is a middle of the road firm mattress that does offer a few unique features others in our product pool don't. First, it's made of memory foam but only allows for some contouring of the body due to how firm the foam is. Our tester reported that they didn't sink into it like they normally do with memory foam mattresses and that it felt far firmer than any mattress they'd slept on before. It's also a solid option for stomach sleepers and can help align the spine when sleeping in that position (same goes for those who sleep on their backs). Another feature our tester appreciated was its cooling top cover that helped limit overheating in the middle of the night. Avocado Green Pillow-Top Mattress In addition to being a quality firm mattress, our tester found the Avocado Green Pillow-Top Mattress excelled at helping her stay cool through the night. She noted that the mattress seemed to get more comfortable over time as it adapted to her body our review If you're shopping for a firm mattress that's also an organic mattress, consider the Avocado Green Pillow-Top. Though it's not 100% organic, it does have several third-party certifications that confirm it's free of chemicals such as formaldehyde, and it's also free of any polyurethane foams. It's also quite expensive at roughly $2,100 for a queen mattress. This won't fall into the budget-friendly category, but if you're green-conscious, sleep on your back and prefer a firm mattress, this is a good option. Nectar Classic Hybrid Mattress The Nectar Classic Hybrid is an extremely firm mattress that's only for die-hards. Our tester found it far too firm for his liking, even while sleeping on his back, and it actually increased his back pain over the testing our review If you're on the hunt for one of the firmest mattresses you can buy, perhaps the Nectar Classic Hybrid is what you seek. Our tester, outdoors, sustainable living and pets editor Kai Burkhardt, said that he had a very hard time getting comfortable while sleeping on this mattress because of how rigid and firm it was. He even tried sleeping solely on his back, and it ended up increasing his back pain instead of alleviating it. That's not to say this isn't a solid choice for anyone who prefers a firm mattress. Just know that this sits squarely at the furthest end of the firm spectrum. It's affordable price makes it an attractive option too. Awara Natural Luxury Hybrid Mattress The Natural Luxury Hybrid from Awara is a firm yet springy mattress that offers good edge support and is best for those who sleep on their backs. It also tends to be on sale for around $900 for a queen size, which is great our review Although CNN Underscored home and gifts editor Amina Lake Patel wasn't the target user of this Awara mattress (she's a side sleeper who prefers a more plush mattress), she admitted that it's likely a great option for back sleepers who prefer something firm. She also appreciated how springy it was to sit on and that it provided solid edge support. However, that springy feature didn't equate to increased comfort, and since Patel sleeps entirely on her side, she reported some hip pain and discomfort after only a few weeks with this mattress. She also wasn't a fan of the delivery and setup process, as the mattress showed up at her apartment in a damaged box, and the entire thing was far too heavy for her to hoist up the multiple flights of stairs to her residence. Puffy 12-Inch Lux Hybrid Mattress Puffy's Lux Hybrid mattress is ideal for those who prefer firm mattresses and who sleep on their backs. If you're a side sleeper, you may want to look elsewhere. Read our review The Lux Hybrid from Puffy does a few things extremely well, according to CNN Underscored senior testing editor, Rick Stella. It looks and feels like a premium mattress, is firm enough to satiate those who like sleeping on their back and is middle of the pack in terms of price. That's why Stella thinks it's a great choice for anyone who experiences some back pain or who just prefer sleeping on something more firm. It also excels at keeping sleepers cool, something Stella mentioned was noticeable throughout his multi-week testing period with the mattress. He said he tends to sleep warm but never felt like he overheated at all. Sleep Number ClimateCool Premium Smart Bed The ClimateCool Premium Smart bed from Sleep Number is about as luxury a sleeping experience as you can get, offering adjustable firmness levels, dual cooling zones and an optional flexible base. It also costs over $4, our review It's hard to fully recommend Sleep Number's ClimateCool Premium Smart Bed, but one thing about it is certain: It lives up to its name of being a 'premium' bed. CNN Underscored associate testing writer Joe Bloss couldn't deny how nice it was to sleep on this mattress and said that being able to adjust the firmness and temperature of the mattress on either side of the bed puts it in a class of its own. But it's also extremely expensive, which makes it difficult to truly assess its value. Put simply, if you have the budget, this is probably the best mattress you can buy because of its versatility to satisfy almost any kind of sleeper. Outdoors, sustainable living and pets editor Kai Burkhardt tested the Nectar Classic Hybrid Mattress. Associate testing writer Joe Bloss tested the Sleep Number ClimateCool Premium Smart Bed. Home and gifts editor Amina Lake Patel tested the Awara Natural Luxury Hybrid Mattress. Director of social Stephanie Griffin tested the Plank Firm. Associate testing writer Gareen Puglia tested the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress. Senior testing editor Rick Stella tested the Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress. Contributing writer Jamie Ueda tested the Avocado Green Pillow-Top Mattress as well as the Nectar Premier Memory Foam Mattress. For this article, we consulted the following expert for insights about the best mattresses for back pain. Dr. Chelsie Rohrscheib, sleep expert, neuroscientist and head sleep researcher and consultant at the Wesper sleep clinic in New York City The following FAQs were answered by sleep expert Dr. Chelsie Rohrscheib. Are firm mattresses good for a bad back? Are firm mattresses good for a bad back? 'A firm mattress can support spinal alignment, which may relieve back pain,' said Rohrscheib. 'However, if the mattress is too firm, it can create pressure points and worsen discomfort, especially in the hips and shoulders. The key is finding the right balance of support and cushioning.' Is it better to sleep on a firm or a soft mattress? Is it better to sleep on a firm or a soft mattress? 'It depends on your body type and sleep position,' Rohrscheib said. 'Back and stomach sleepers usually benefit from a medium-firm mattress for proper support. Side sleepers often need a softer to medium mattress to cushion the shoulders and hips. The goal is to maintain spinal alignment while minimizing pressure.' Can a firm mattress help joint pain? Can a firm mattress help joint pain? 'A medium-firm mattress can help joint and back pain by promoting proper spinal alignment and reducing strain on pressure points,' said Rohrscheib. 'But if the mattress is too firm, it may increase joint pain, especially for side sleepers or those with arthritis.' CNN Underscored editors thoroughly test all the products we cover and provide full transparency about how we test them. Our Guide To The Best Firm Mattresses In Canada In 2025 (And Where To Get Them)
Get the support you need with our guide to the best firm mattresses in Canada. We've reviewed top models for spinal alignment, durability, and comfort balance. Everyone knows the value of a good night's sleep, right? Your body feels good, your mind is sharp, and you're ready to tackle all the fun and responsibilities of a new day. One of the easiest ways to guarantee a great sleep is to choose the right mattress. If you've ever slept on something too soft or too hard, you know exactly how important it is to have the right bed. Firm mattresses are the bed of choice for so many people, and there are lots of reasons for that. They offer more support than softer mattresses, hold up better to daily (nightly?) use (a longer lifespan means more bang for your buck!), and have better edge support. Who doesn't want all of those things? If you're looking for a replacement for your current bed or you're branching out into firm mattresses for the first time, we're here to make your decision a little bit easier. Firm mattresses will vary in things like price, sleeping space, thickness, material, cooling abilities, edge support, warranty, sleep trial, and more. Every feature matters, so make sure you think about all of them. This comprehensive guide will investigate the best firm mattresses in Canada right now and outline the criteria you should consider while making your purchase decision. Let's dive right into our top five products. The Best Firm Mattresses Right Now Our Memory Foam Pick for The Best Firm Mattress Casper Dawn Mattress Review What We Think of the Casper Dawn Mattress The Casper Dawn Mattress is easily one of our favourite firm mattresses of all time. No matter which mattress size you choose, the price is highly reasonable, and it includes a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty. Since this is an extra-firm option made of memory foam, you'll get to rely on not sinking into your mattress but still feel that your body is cushioned. The top layers of foam are designed for extra breathability, too, so minor fluctuations in temperature can be dealt with easily. Our favourite feature, though, is the motion isolation. Whether you sleep with pets, occasional kids, a partner, or all of the above, you'll be able to enjoy your rest no matter how much your companions move. There are two groups of people who will not benefit from this mattress. The first group is hot sleepers. If you tend to overheat overnight, the lack of cooling technologies in this mattress might not turn out so well for you. It's also not great for people who need many, many weeks to get used to a new bed, because the sleep trial is only 100 nights. All in all, the Casper Dawn Mattress is incredibly well-rounded and should be a great fit for anyone who likes a very firm sleeping surface. With excellent motion isolation and a breathable top layer thrown in for good measure, it offers way more value than you'd expect for the price. Performance: 5/5 Usability: 5/5 Price: 4.5/5 Quality: 5/5 What Reviewers Are Saying About the Casper Dawn Mattress Reviewers are very happy with the Casper Dawn Mattress. The firmness level is exactly what they were expecting for an extra-firm mattress, and it's still comfortable to lie on all night long. They also have no problems sleeping with pets or partners thanks to the excellent motion isolation. They highly recommend this one for others and would choose it again for themselves. Casper Dawn Mattress Pros and Cons Buy If… You hate sinking into a mattress Breathability is important to you A great price tag appeals to you Motion isolation is a priority Don't Buy If… You tend to sleep hot You need a lot of time to get used to a new bed Casper Dawn Mattress Specifications Available Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king Weight: 36 to 74 lbs Thickness: 9' Material: Memory foam Sleep Trial: 100 nights Warranty: 10 years Our Hybrid Pick Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress Review What We Think of the Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress One of the great things about the Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress is how balanced it is. With 1,200 pocket coils, you get tons of body support, edge support, and motion isolation (all winning features on their own, right?), and the high-density memory foam layers provide firm support and sumptuous comfort. Doesn't it sound amazing? We're also really happy to report that this mattress is entirely sourced and crafted in Canada, so you can feel proud to support Canadian companies when you choose this one. The antimicrobial cover is another great touch—if you suffer from allergies or just enjoy an extra-clean place to sleep, this feature will likely be one of your favourites too. The only possible concern you might have with this mattress is its cooling technologies. It is able to provide some cooling with a fabric cover and gel-infused memory foam, but it isn't as effective as other mattresses dedicated to cooling. If you tend to overheat quite a bit at night, this one won't be able to help you achieve a cool sleep. All in all, the Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress has one of the best feature lists you'll be able to find right now. Whether you're searching for unbeatable edge support, motion isolation, or gentle cooling, this mattress will be a great fit for your bedroom. Performance: 5/5 Usability: 5/5 Price: 5/5 Quality: 5/5 What Reviewers Are Saying About the Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress Reviewers have great things to say about the Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress. It does a great job of cushioning their joints without letting them sink into the mattress, and they're really happy with how well its motion isolation works. The edge support is the best they've ever felt, too. Some people sleep too hot on it, but most feel great all night. Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress Pros and Cons Buy If… Antimicrobial protection would be nice You love a balanced blend of comfort and support You prefer to shop Canadian Edge support and motion isolation are priorities Don't Buy If… You experience night sweats regularly Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress Specifications Available Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king Weight: 43 to 92 lbs Thickness: 11' Material: High-density memory foam and 1200 pocketed coils Sleep Trial: 365 nights Warranty: 15 years Our Organic Pick Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Review What We Think of the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress We really like the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress. Its materials are completely natural—cotton, wool, and latex form the fire-retardant and comfort-providing layers, and a base layer of pocketed coils provides the support you're looking for. We also highly approve of the handles on the sides—if you've ever tried to rotate or carry a mattress without them, you know exactly how valuable that feature will be for future you. The supportive structure of this mattress is also something to admire. Dense coils along the edges provide amazing edge support, so you can comfortably sit or even sleep along the edge if you'd like to. These coils also provide excellent zoned support for your body—two-thirds of the space inside the edge coils provides firm support, and the middle third is softer to promote proper spinal alignment. Brilliant. One of the reasons this mattress might not be right for you is if you're a side sleeper. With the firmness level of this mattress, it might not offer enough shoulder support for long-term comfort. Otherwise, the only concern you might have is the price tag. While it's not extremely expensive, it also isn't the most affordable option, so you can do better if you're shopping on a tight budget. All in all, the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress is our favourite choice for people eager to support sustainable and ethical items. It's incredibly comfortable, zoned for optimal body support, and even has handles for convenience. How do you beat all that? Performance: 5/5 Usability: 5/5 Price: 4.5/5 Quality: 5/5 What Reviewers Are Saying About the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Reviewers have a very high opinion of the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress. The handles make it so much easier to get the bed in place, rotate it when needed, and carry it when moving. They're very impressed by the edge support, too. Side sleepers find it a bit too firm for shoulder comfort, but most people get a great sleep on it every night. Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Pros and Cons Buy If… Natural materials are important to you Zoned support appeals to you You like to sit or sleep on the edge of your bed You hate struggling to carry/rotate mattresses Don't Buy If… You're a side sleeper You're limited by a tight budget Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Specifications Available Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king Weight: 64 to 110 lbs Thickness: 10' Material: Organic cotton cover, organic wool and latex layers, and pocketed spring coils Sleep Trial: 365 nights Warranty: 15 years Our Cooling Pick Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress Review What We Think of the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress is remarkable. The main reason for that is its long list of cooling technologies. A QuickCool cover, AirScape technology, HeatDelete Bands, and Phase Change materials are only the highlights—the full list guarantees you'll sleep six degrees cooler at night. All of these cooling layers, combined with the supportive layers, create a delightful 14' mattress that you'll love. The ergonomic support built into this mattress is another thing we're excited to share with you. The foam layers are broken into different ergonomic segments to provide firmer support where you need it (hips, for example) and softer cushioning for pressure points like your shoulders. Brilliant. The edge support of this mattress is exquisite, so you'll always be supported when you sit or lie down on the edge. This is one of the most valuable mattresses currently available, and as a result, it also has a pretty hefty price tag. If you're shopping on any kind of budget, this one might not be attainable without some serious saving. Otherwise, the lack of a twin size might be the only reason this won't be a good fit for you. All in all, the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress is our absolute favourite recommendation for anyone who struggles to maintain a normal temperature at night. This one will fix those problems, and probably any aches and pains or restless habits, too. It's that good. Performance: 5/5 Usability: 5/5 Price: 2/5 Quality: 5/5 What Reviewers Are Saying About the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress Reviewers absolutely rave about the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress. The blend of soft comfort and firm support guarantees they have an amazing sleep and wake up feeling great. They're amazed by how much cooler they stay, too. They never wake up because of overheating. They are all grateful they chose this mattress instead of the others they were considering. Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress Pros and Cons Buy If… Sleeping cool feels unattainable Ergonomic support is what you're looking for You enjoy a thick mattress Edge support is a must-have feature Don't Buy If… You're unable or unwilling to spend a lot on a new mattress You need a twin mattress Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress Specifications Available Sizes: Twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king Weight: 64 to 130 lbs Thickness: 14' Material: Foam blend and coils Sleep Trial: 100 nights Warranty: 10 years Our Budget Pick Endy Mattress Review What We Think of the Endy Mattress We are huge fans of the Endy Mattress. It isn't a common thing to find a mattress that boasts an incredibly accessible price as well as a long list of valuable features. One of the things we like most about this one is how great it is at pressure relief. With multiple foam layers of different densities, it's able to provide the firm support you need while cushioning and protecting your joints. This mattress is also exceptional at motion isolation despite its lack of coils—if you have pets, partners, or kids disrupting your sleep regularly, this mattress is a great way to find rest at last. Breathability is another thing this one offers thanks to the open-cell foam—heat will move away from you at night to keep you feeling your best. Although we love this mattress quite a bit, it does have a couple of shortcomings that might be dealbreakers for you. First, it doesn't offer any active cooling technologies, so if sleeping hot is a serious problem for you, there are better solutions out there. Also, since it's a full-foam mattress, it doesn't offer the same firmness or support as a hybrid competitor. Something to think about? All in all, the Endy Mattress is one of our favourites for shoppers on a budget, and it's not only because of its affordable price tag. It still boasts some of the best support and comfort you could ask for. Trust us, your body (and your bank account) will thank you for choosing this one. Performance: 5/5 Usability: 5/5 Price: 5/5 Quality: 5/5 What Reviewers Are Saying About the Endy Mattress Reviewers are very pleased with the quality of the Endy Mattress. They were also really happy with the price, especially considering how much they actually love sleeping on the mattress. The thinner design makes it easier to get in and out of bed, but it still offers plenty of support and comfort. The motion isolation is highly effective, too. They never get disturbed by a partner's restless movements. Endy Mattress Pros and Cons Buy If… A thin mattress works better for your space and/or mobility Affordability is your top priority A breathable mattress is what you're after Pressure relief and motion isolation are necessary for your best sleep Don't Buy If… You prefer a hybrid mattress for extra support You sleep hot Endy Mattress Specifications Available Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king Weight: 35 to 77 lbs Thickness: 9' Material: Polyester cover and open-cell polyurethane foam layers Sleep Trial: 100 nights Warranty: 15 years Why Trust Shopping Trends? How to Properly Choose Your Firm Mattress Price The price of a firm mattress will vary quite a lot depending on the size you're looking at and what kinds of sleep-promoting features it offers. The price range will typically range between $600 and $5,000. In addition to bigger sizes, more expensive mattresses will offer advanced cooling technologies, better motion isolation and pressure relief, and advanced edge support. They also tend to have longer warranties and sleep trials. Available Sizes Most firm mattresses will be available in all standard sizes (twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king), but some will leave certain sizes out of production. If you aren't willing to buy a new frame and rearrange your bedroom to accommodate a different mattress size, you'll need to make sure your preferred size is available before you fall in love with a particular mattress. Thickness The thickness of a firm mattress will generally land somewhere between nine inches and fourteen inches. Thicker mattresses are better at blending firm support with soft comfort, but they can also make getting in and out of bed more difficult. You'll have to decide what's right for you. Material Firm mattresses come in a variety of materials, but they can broadly be broken down into hybrid vs full foam mattresses. Hybrid styles are generally better at motion isolation, edge support, and that feeling of a firm mattress, but foam options are typically more comfortable for heavier bodies that need extra joint cushioning and weight distribution. Sleep Trial Every mattress will come with a sleep trial, and this lets you test out the mattress before committing to the purchase. On the low end, a sleep trial will last for 100 nights, but some brands will let you use the mattress for as many as 365 nights before you're stuck with it. In our opinion, longer is always better. Cooling Effects Many firm mattresses are equipped with either passive or active cooling technologies to help you maintain the ideal temperature for sleep. Passive cooling technologies like cooling covers or open-cell foam can be found at the most affordable end of the market, but active technologies that work better will cost you a pretty penny. You'll need to decide what's worthwhile for you. Motion Isolation Anyone who sleeps with restless pets, kids, or partners will know that motion transfer can be disruptive to sleep, but many firm mattresses offer motion isolation to keep you deeply in sleep, no matter what other movements are occurring in the bed. Hybrid mattresses tend to be better at this, but all-foam options can still do a good job. Edge Support Edge support is another big thing to look at when choosing a firm mattress. If you spend any amount of time sitting on the edge of a bed to relax or get ready in the morning, or you're an edge sleeper, you're going to need to prioritize edge support more than other features. The Organica line is the brand's latex offering. Latex foam mattresses are known for being more 'natural' than other types of beds and are popular among eco-conscious shoppers. The two Organica mattresses will satisfy shoppers looking for a natural and organic mattress and provide a specific type of comfort and options that should suit your firmness preference. First impressions of the Amerisleep Organica mattress Jon Gomez/CNET The team unboxed the original Organica mattress quite a while ago, and to be honest, the mattress got a bit lost in the shuffle. The nature of latex foam beds like Organica means that it has a lot of similarities in design, firmness and feel to other beds in its class, like the Avocado Green, the Awara Natural and the Winkbed EcoCloud. It is just difficult to stand out when the competition is using the same specific materials. When the new Amerisleep Organica Plush first arrived, I was immediately surprised by just how plush it was. Most beds right out of the box are a bit soft -- but even after a few days, the Organica Plush was easily the softest latex hybrid bed I've tested. Dillon Payne/CNET This is great news because not many beds in this category are plush, and Organica can now fill that niche. Is the Amerisleep Organica mattress right for you? The Organica mattress is a solid pick for anyone looking for a latex foam hybrid mattress with organic certifications. It's relatively affordable compared to the competition, and the new Organica Plush model for side sleepers is a fantastic choice for side sleepers who want something soft and organic. Amerisleep Organica mattress firmness and feel Organica mattress feel The feel of both versions of the Organica mattress is virtually identical. It's similar to most beds with latex foam in their construction. Latex foam is a naturally bouncy material. When you press down on it with your hand and then take your hand away, it snaps back into shape almost immediately, so it's responsive and moves with you. Dillon Payne/CNET If you've ever tried a memory foam bed, latex foam is basically the exact opposite. When rotating between sleeping positions, like from your side to your back, it feels like the material is almost propelling you, which is jarring if you've tried a latex bed before. I personally find latex foam beds comfortable (although I'm sleeping on a memory foam bed right now), but not everyone does. We cycle through beds at our office a lot when new models come out, and old ones are no longer available. I have noticed that when people come to our office to test out beds, latex foam ones seem to be liked the least. That is obviously anecdotal, and lots of people enjoy the feel of latex foam but just know it's unlike most traditional beds. Organica firmness The Organica mattress is now available in two different models, with the key difference being the firmness profile. The base model Organica is between a medium and a medium-firm on our firmness scale (roughly a 6.5 out of 10). This means it should work well for all sleeper types: back, stomach, side and combination. Combination sleepers who spend part of the night in one position and then switch are usually fans of this type of firmness profile, as are couples. JD Christison/CNET Side sleepers generally favor beds with a softer profile that cradles their hips and shoulders and offers pressure relief. The newer Organica Plush fits that bill, and our Mattress Smasher 9000 rated it 2.5 out of 10. It is easily the softest latex mattress we've tested to date. Dillon Payne/CNET This is great news for side sleepers looking for an organic latex mattress because the second softest latex bed we've tested to date is the Winkbed Ecocloud (5.1 out of 10). Amerisleep Organica mattress construction The construction of both models of Organica is pretty standard for a latex foam hybrid. The main support layer of Organica is an 8-inch layer of individually wrapped, responsive coils. This provides plenty of support for every body type, including heavier folks. Above the coil layer is a 1-inch layer of natural Talalay latex foam. This layer of latex foam is a bit firmer and functions as a buffer between the comfort foam above and the coil layer below. The main comfort layer is a 2-inch layer of soft Talalay latex foam. Between the latex foam and the organic cotton cover is a 1-inch layer of organic wool for more padding and a fire barrier. Jon Gomez/CNET On the Organica Plush, an additional 3 inches of latex foam softens the bed significantly. This bed has a whopping 6 inches of latex foam in the mattress. Organica certifications As I've mentioned a few times, pretty much every material used in constructing the Organica mattress has some certification to show that it is organic and eco-friendly. The latex foam has GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certifications. The wool and cotton are GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified. The Organica mattress is a great choice if you're looking for an eco-friendly mattress. Earthfoam mattress performance Edge support The edge support of a mattress is important for couples sharing a mattress. If the bed's perimeter doesn't hold up well under pressure, it can lead to poor sleep due to feeling like you're going to roll off the bed. Jon Gomez/CNET The edge support for both versions of Organica is good. You will feel more supported by the base model than the Plush model because it is firmer and there's less material between you and the support coils, but I don't see people having issues on either one. The coils along the perimeter of the bed are made with a thicker gauge of steel, which provides improved edge support and is helpful for couples. Motion Isolation Motion isolation is another factor important for couples because a bed with poor motion isolation can wake you up if your partner tosses and turns throughout the night. This is an area where the Organica mattress doesn't perform that well because of the nature of latex foam. It's so bouncy and responsive that if your partner tosses and turns at night, you will likely feel like and if you're a light sleeper, that can lead to disrupted sleep. If you're a heavy sleeper who doesn't even wake up easily, then this won't be an issue, but light sleepers might have problems with Organica. Temperature regulation I'd describe the Organica mattress as sleeping temperature neutral. Latex foam is naturally breathable, and the molds mattress makers use to manufacture latex foam create perforations in the foam that improve airflow even more. Dillon Payne/CNET Organic beds made with wool can sleep warmer than average, as two members of our teams discovered when they sleept on the Avocado Luxury Organic mattress for a full month. Sleeping hot has way more to do with your sleeping environment than your specific mattress, so I wouldn't worry too much. Organica (base model) mattress pricing Size Measurements (inches) Price Twin 38x75 $1,499 Twin XL 38x80 $1,549 Full 54x75 $1,699 Queen 60x80 $1,749 King 76x80 $2,049 Cal king 72x84 $2,049 The base model Organica mattress is competitively priced when compared to other latex foam hybrids. It's more affordable than the base model Avocado Green mattress, the Winkbed EcoCloud and the Birch Natural. It's also usually discounted heavily to bring the retail price down. The Organica Plush is expensive, though. A queen-size Organica Plush costs an additional $1,250 on top of the retail price of the base model, coming out to $2,999. This price puts it in the luxury tier. Dillon Payne/CNET Amerisleep mattress policies Free shipping Like most online mattresses, the Organica will ship right to your door at no extra cost inside a large box (as long as you live in the contiguous United States). If you live outside the US or in Alaska or Hawaii, you must pay for a 'freight forwarder' to get this bed shipped to you. Unboxing this particular mattress isn't easy because it's quite heavy, so you should definitely have a friend there to help you remove it from the box. 100-night trial Amerisleep provides a standard 100-night in-home sleep trial with all of its beds. Keep in mind that your sleep trial begins the day you receive the mattress so make sure you get it unboxed as quickly as you can and start sleeping on it because it can take up to 30 nights for your body to adjust to a new bed. Return policy Within the 100-night trial period, but not before night 30, you can return the Organica and get a full refund with no additional cost, making the mattress a risk-free purchase. Like most brands, Amerisleep will ask you to sleep on the bed for at least 30 nights before initiating a return because no matter how nice and well-suited your new mattress is to your sleep type, your body needs a bit of time to adjust to it. Warranty The Organica mattresses are backed by a 20-year warranty, double the length of the standard 10-year warranty. This covers manufacturer defects, and if your mattress develops sagging beyond normal wear and tear, you should be covered. How does the Organica mattress compare to similar mattresses? Organica vs. WinkBed EcoCloud The WinkBed EcoCloud is another latex foam hybrid with several organic certifications. Before we tested the Organica Plush, the WinkBed EcoCloud was the softest latex hybrid bed, rating a true medium on our firmness scale. It strikes a nice balance between comfort and support and has the same type of ultrabouncy feel. It's much more affordable than the Organica Plush but a bit more expensive than the base model Organica. Organica vs. Avocado Green The Avocado Green mattress is the industry leader for latex beds and features an impressive number of certifications for its materials and production processes. Avocado is also available in different options: base, pillow-top and box pillow-top models. The box pillow-top model is most similar to the Organica Plush as it's soft and designed for side sleepers. Final thoughts on the Organica mattress The base model Organica doesn't stand out from the latex foam hybrid crowd in a significant way, but it is a solid all-around choice. It has all the certifications eco-conscious shoppers are looking for: a relatively accommodating firmness profile, the standard latex foam feel, and it's not too expensive. Final thoughts on the Organica mattress The base model Organica doesn't stand out from the latex foam hybrid crowd in a significant way, but it is a solid all-around choice. Dillon Payne/CNET But with the addition of the Organica Plush option and being so soft -- this is the best option for side sleepers looking for a latex bed. Most latex foam beds are on the firmer end of the spectrum and this is easily the softest latex beds we've tested. So, for side sleepers who want an organic mattress, the Organica Plush is a great decision if it fits your budget. You might like the Organica mattress if: You want a bouncy feel You enjoy a firm mattress You want an organic mattress You want a soft mattress You might not like the Organica mattress if: You prefer the feel of memory foam You're shopping on a budget You want especially firm mattresses Other mattresses from Amerisleep Amerisleep AS3: This is Amerisleep's most popular mattress, sitting right in the middle of its AS1-5 lineup in terms of firmness. It should work fairly well for all sleeping positions. It is available in a coil model and a foam model. It now has a cooling cover added at no extra cost. This bed is made with Amerisleep's 'BioPur' memory foam in its main comfort layer, which has virtually the exact opposite type of feel when compared to Organica. Amerisleep AS6 Black Series: This is Amerisleep's newest bed and one of the most luxurious memory foam beds we've tested. It's packed full of features like an active cooling cover, zoned support and edge support coils, and it comes in three different firmness profiles. It's roughly the same price as the Organica Plush, but thanks to its body-conforming memory foam, it has the exact opposite type of feel.
