Trump Undergoes Emergency Heart Tests After Swelling Detected
President Donald Trump has undergone medical testing after photographs showed noticeable swelling in his ankles. As the Daily Beast reports, the 79-year-old former reality TV personality was also seen with foundation covering his right hand during a July 15 press hearing, possibly to obscure bruising, as well the swelling in his lower legs, before the "emergency" testing. However, Trump officials claim the septuagenarian is in overall good health. "In recent weeks, President Trump noted mild swelling in his lower legs," press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Thursday. "In keeping with routine medical care and out of an abundance of caution, this concern was thoroughly evaluated by the White House medical unit." She said that Trump had a "benign and common condition" called Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI), which happens when damaged veins in the legs don't allow blood to return to the heart, allowing it to flow backwards. Leavitt told reporters his evaluation included venous doppler ultrasound and an echocardiogram of his heart, which "confirmed normal cardiac structure and function." Trump's health has long been the subject of discussion, particularly when it comes to his infamously fast-food-heavy diet. Yet, despite troubling clues that his health may be deteriorating, his administration has been adamant that his health remains "excellent." What his deteriorating health could mean for the presidency remains to be seen. However, his predecessor, former president Joe Biden, became the oldest president in American history at the ripe old age of 81, leading to significant public pressure to abandon his bid for reelection. Without treatment, CVI can lead to swelling, cramps, varicose legs, and leg ulcers, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. While it's "not a serious health threat," it can be "painful and disabling." "You would not check an ultrasound unless he had varicose veins or leg swelling," Massachusetts General Hospital surgeon Sherry Scovell told the Washington Post. "In the absence of that, many people could be walking around with CVI." People who are overweight, have high blood pressure, sit or stand for long periods, and don't exercise are more likely to develop CVI. Treatment conventionally includes keeping your legs elevated, wearing compression stockings, and regular exercise. Severe cases can be addressed surgically. It's also not the first time we've observed bruising on Trump's hands. Experts say the bruises are likely from an IV or blood drawing. However, Leavitt told the Beast that the bruise is due to "minor soft tissue irritation from frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin, which is taken as part of a standard cardiovascular prevention regimen." Becton to merge unit with Waters in $17.5 billion deal
July 14 (Reuters) - Lab equipment maker Waters Corp (WAT.N), opens new tab will merge with rival Becton, Dickinson and Company's (BDX.N), opens new tab Biosciences & Diagnostic Solutions unit in a $17.5 billion deal, the companies said, creating a larger entity focused on high-volume medical testing. The deal announced on Monday is structured as a so-called Reverse Morris Trust, which allows a company to avoid a big tax bill by spinning off a unit that it wants to divest while simultaneously merging it with another company. The eye-popping deal value signifies the amount of stock that BD shareholders will have in the combined company - about 39.2% - and the $4 billion cash distribution that BD will receive at closing. Becton's biosciences and diagnostic solutions unit makes products used to detect infectious diseases and cancers. The company has been looking to divest the unit to deepen focus on its core business of medical devices. Funding for life sciences and microbiology research has been under pressure in recent years, impacting the performance of BD's biosciences business. Meanwhile, sale of medical devices remained robust post pandemic due to the increased demand for outpatient and other surgeries. The merger doubles Waters' addressable market to $40 billion, enhances recurring revenue streams and accelerates expansion into areas such as bioseparations, bioanalytical characterization and multiplex diagnostics, Waters CEO Udit Batra said. The market reaction, however, was opposite, with Waters' shares falling 5.3% premarket following the announcement. Becton's stock was marginally down. Leerink analysts said investors will likely not view the deal as attractive in the near term, given the higher exposure to microbiology amid recent funding cuts. As part of the deal, which is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, Waters will assume about $4 billion in incremental debt.

Health Canada approves Abbott's i-STAT TBI test for suspected concussions
Health Canada has granted approval for Abbott's i-STAT TBI test cartridge, enabling clinicians to evaluate suspected concussions more effectively. The authorisation allows for the use of the test cartridge with whole blood, enabling clinicians to get lab-quality results in 15 minutes. Previously, mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) assessment tests were authorised only for plasma or serum samples, necessitating lab processing. The approval facilitates testing in diverse healthcare settings, potentially expanding to pharmacies, clinics without radiology, and even sporting event sidelines. The i-STAT TBI test is designed to assess those who are 18 years and above with suspected mTBI (commonly referred to as concussion). It can help rule out the requirement for a head computed tomography (CT) scan and guide the further steps for individual care, using other clinical information. The authorisation also extends the test's utility to assess individuals up to 24 hours post-injury, addressing situations where individuals may delay seeking medical attention. Abbott's market offerings for TBI testing already include the i-STAT TBI Plasma test and the ARCHITECT and Alinity i lab tests for serum and plasma. To be used with the i-STAT Alinity System, the i-STAT TBI test cartridge needs only a small blood sample. It measures two brain-specific biomarkers, ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), released into the bloodstream after brain injury. If levels of these biomarkers are below a certain threshold, a serious injury is unlikely, and a CT scan may be avoided.
