British wildcard Sonay Kartal asks public for ideas for her 15th tattoo at Wimbledon; her favourite currently – pawprint of her Golden Retriever
Sonay Kartal is adding the wild to the wildcard and is a massive fan favourite at Wimbledon as the Brighton 23-year-old reached Round 3 after hammering Bulgaria's Viktoria Tomova in straight sets. She has asked the public at SW19 to send in their suggestions for her 15th tattoo, and assured that 90 % she will listen to the ideas and get them inked. The British wildcard is filling up sidecourts after she upset 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko, and being praised for her game which is extremely no-nonsense and very efficient. quoted her as a fan fave 'wearing her customary buttoned up, baggy T-shirt reminiscent of 1990s players. She currently has 14 tattoos and promised after her first round victory to give more information on her next inking if she progressed further.' She was originally from Sidcup in south London with Turkish and English heritage, but grew up in Brighton and couldn't afford regular coaching. But tattoos have been her constant accompaniments. 'I'm open to suggestions. Like if people throw me some good ideas, I will definitely consider them – 90% I would end up going with one of those ideas. If people want to send me their ideas, I will most likely pick one of them and will probably chuck it on somewhere,' she told Her current tattoos include an eagle, a snake, the number 2022 to honour the year she first played in four Grand Slams, and assorted others 'on her knuckles which have no meaning. At the French Open, she got a bee inked alongwith two quotes, 'Time is everything we have and don't' & 'the show must go on.' Super Sonay does it in style 💥 Sonay Kartal defeats Viktoriya Tomova 6-2, 6-2 to reach the third round for the second year in a row 💪#Wimbledon — Wimbledon (@Wimbledon) July 2, 2025 She told the that her favourite was her doggie's pawprint. After the first round, she went into great detail on how it was done. 'I have one on the back of my arm which is one of my first dog, a massive golden retriever. I bought some doggy ink and got his paw print downsized, got it tattooed and put it into a little picture on the back of my arm.' Sonay tentatively has one planned for the number 329 – her 'colour holder' number from the Billie Jean King Cup, after debuting for Great Britain. Tim Henman, former British number one and Wimbledon semi-finalist, told BBC, 'Sonay Kartal has been brilliant (over the last 12 months), I love her story, I love her journey and I think she is such an important role model because she has done it the hard way. She has been out there grinding in some of the smaller events with her ranking down in the 300s, looking for those ranking points to break through into bigger tournaments to earn more prize money to invest in your game,' he said. 'Hopefully Sonay can continue to build on that and move her ranking higher and higher towards the top of the game.' Speaking to the BBC on Wednesday after her victory at Wimbledon, Kartal said she wanted to me known as more than a two weeks player. 'I think even last year, I wanted to back up the run I had last year. I didn't want people to think that it was just one good, two good weeks out of the year. At this tournament I really wanted to show that I'm at this level now, I can consistently play. I think after the match against Jelena, I had so much confidence. I feel like with each match on the grass and out here, I'm growing in confidence.' Kartal likes to keep it chill on court. 'On the court I'm pretty tunnel vision, I don't give too much away and just like to keep calm and try and see out the match. But no, I think that the last five months has obviously, you know, kind of thrown myself onto the scene. Top 50, playing all the bigger matches, and I think this year I made a conscious effort that I only wanted to play the bigger matches. Just getting used to playing the best players on tour day in, day out. I think that each match I'm growing in confidence, I feel like I'm playing better, I feel like I'm playing with more freedom and much more confidence in my game,' Sonay said.

Hundreds unable to leave hotspot hotel by front door as cops seal up entrance
The only way in and out of the beachfront Vivemar Hotel near Torremolinos is through the garage car-park entrance for more than 200 guests as staff say they are 'rushed off' their feet Nearly 200 holidaymakers at a seafront Costa del Sol hotel have been prevented from leaving via the front door - after local police said it was operating without proper licences were ordered by town hall bosses to seal it up. Tourists staying at the four-star hotel in the popular resort of Benalmadena Costa near Torremolinos are having to exit the establishment via a ground-floor garage. Details of the extraordinary situation emerged today after police padlocked the main entry door to the Vivemar Hote l using steel cables and put a large notice on the entrance saying 'Precintado' or 'Sealed Off' in English. Are you one of the holidaymakers staying at the hotel? Email webnews@ A receptionist at the hotel, which used to be called the Vistamar Hotel, said this evening when asked if any British or Irish guests were holidaying there: 'I'm a bit rushed off my feet at the moment to check where our clients are from but I'd say there would be because we've got a bit of everything." "There's almost 200 tourists staying here at the moment because we're nearly full. The police came this morning and sealed the front door. "At the moment the only way in and out of the hotel for staff and guests is the garage car park.' She denied reports guests had been stopped from using the swimming pool, insisting it was open as normal. Benalmadena Town Hall could not be reached last night for comment. But a spokesman told respected local paper Sur that they had instructed town hall-employed local police to seal off the front entrance after failing to find any sign of the hotel in an official regional tourist accommodation register. Raul Campos told the newspaper: 'We have asked in the Junta de Andalucia's Tourism Department and they say the company that operates the hotel is not in the official register. That means it can't be officially opened as it does not have the proper documentation.' He went on to insist council officials had warned the hotel management about today's police action at the end of March. Manager Alberto Tusquellas, who a hotel receptionist said this evening was in meetings and unavailable, has blamed things on a 'red tape' hiccup. He told local press a Spanish firm called Vive Resort Management SL began operating the hotel around a year ago with a sublease agreement using a previous operator's registration number which had now been revoked because of a bureaucratic problem they were trying to fix. The hotel operator's version of events has been contradicted by the building's owners who said the sublease was the subject of ongoing civil and criminal court action after they discovered the company they had signed a contract with to run the hotel had agreed to sublet it to another firm without their knowledge. The claim of the owner, identified locally as María Jose García Vargas, could not be independently verified last night. The hotel receptionist insisted this evening: 'The swimming pool is still open and the guests can use it as normal. 'The car park the guests are having to enter and exit the hotel via is a closed building but it's on the ground floor.' The seafront Vivemar Hotel describes itself online as a 138-room hotel with modern facilities. Online travel websites say it has a 'lush garden' and guests can 'relax by the seasonal outdoor swimming pool.' One adds: 'The on-site restaurant serves Mediterranean cuisine for dinner, complemented by a bar for refreshments. A buffet breakfast is available each morning, providing a perfect start to the day.' One recent guest writing an online review said: 'The cleaning leaves much to be desired. Old room furniture and broken curtain fall out when you try to open the balcony door. I don't recommend it to my worst enemy.' Another wrote: 'No towels or bed sheets on the first day. It was hard to order even toilet paper. Little cleaning. Bathrooms don't do them daily. The dryer was broken. The reception service is abysmal and the buffet is poor quality. Not recommended.'
