F1's heart and soul lies in Spa. But the clamour for glamour puts it at risk
Each summer, fans descend on the Belgian countryside, braving unpredictable weather and muddy campsites for a glimpse of Formula One's most romanticised battleground. Tucked in the Ardennes forest, Spa-Francorchamps, hosting the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend, is a rite of passage for drivers, a pilgrimage for fans, and for many, the heart and soul of motor sport. Since its debut on the calendar in 1950, Spa has carved itself into F1 folklore. Mika Häkkinen's audacious double overtake on Michael Schumacher and Ricardo Zonta in 2000 is one of the sport's most celebrated moves. In 2023, Max Verstappen stormed from 14th to victory in an epic comeback. Ayrton Senna won five times there, calling it his favourite circuit, a sentiment echoed by many current drivers. At 7km long with 19 corners, Spa is the longest track on the calendar and home to some of F1's most distinguished features. Nowhere is this clearer than at Eau Rouge and Raidillon, a sweeping blind uphill left-right kink that rewards precision and bravery in equal measure. Lewis Hamilton once described the thrill as a stomach-churning plunge that makes it feel like everything might come up at once. 'It's quite the rush when you're doing 200mph,' he admitted. But the same section that delivers such exhilaration has also brought tragedy. In 2019, Formula 2 driver Anthoine Hubert died at Raidillon following a high-speed multi-car collision. Four years later, 18-year-old Dutch driver Dilano van 't Hoff was killed at the same corner during a Formula Regional race, this time in treacherous wet conditions. The crashes were hauntingly similar: a car losing control, struck at speed by oncoming traffic cresting the hill with little visibility. With growing concerns about safety, Spa responded with changes in 2022: gravel traps were reintroduced, barriers were moved, and some runoff areas widened. But critics argue the changes did not go far enough to address the corner's inherent dangers, especially in the wet, where spray and visibility become critical factors. George Russell likened it to 'driving down the motorway in pouring rain and turning your windscreen wipers off'. And now, alongside the safety debate, Spa is also facing a battle for its place on the calendar; its future, once considered untouchable, is now under threat. In a sport increasingly shaped by commercial interests, heritage circuits like Spa are being squeezed. Its most recent contract extension confirmed the Belgian Grand Prix will remain but on a rotational basis. Spa is set to be dropped from the calendar in both 2028 and 2030, potentially alternating with new venues in Thailand, Argentina or Rwanda. For some, it's a natural evolution. For others, it's a warning sign. The release of Netflix's Drive to Survive in 2018 marked a turning point for Formula One, particularly in the United States. Under Liberty Media's ownership, the sport has seen a dramatic shift in scale and audience. Attendance at the US Grand Prix in Austin nearly doubled between 2018 and 2022, and a 2025 survey found that 73% of American fans now intend to attend a race. Now with Apple TV reportedly bidding for US broadcast rights on the back of the F1 film, the commercial juggernaut shows no signs of slowing. But the sport's growing appetite for glamour, reflected in the rise of circuits like Las Vegas, Miami and Jeddah, has raised concerns. For all the spectacle, there is a sense that Formula One is edging away from the traditions that built it. Circuits like Spa, Silverstone and Monza are now forced to compete with newer venues offering flashier packages and deeper pockets. Verstappen, Spa's unofficial home hero, has previously suggested that traditional tracks deserve special status in the sport, exempting them from rotation or replacement. F1 has always walked the line between danger and glory. But in an era shaped by commercial growth and heightened safety standards, Spa presents an uneasy dilemma. Its difficulty is part of its charm – the unpredictable weather, the margin for error, the rawness that feels increasingly rare. As the sport moves further into new markets, the question is no longer just whether Spa should stay. It is whether Formula One can afford to lose what it represents. For now, the Belgian Grand Prix remains, and this year's edition promises another compelling chapter. With Christian Horner's departure, all eyes will be on how Red Bull responds under new leadership. McLaren, meanwhile, look to extend their surge in form as the title fight intensifies. And as ever, the drivers face one of the sport's greatest challenges – a circuit that rewards bravery and punishes hesitation.

Emirati icon Ben Sulayem guides FIA to financial turnaround
The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, announced a pivotal turnaround in its financial health under the leadership of FIA President and Emirati motor sport legend Mohammed Ben Sulayem. At the end of the fiscal year 2024, the Fédération reported that is has achieved a robust operating result of €4.7m, and an operating income of € 182.0m. This takes it from a considerable financial loss of €-24.0m in 2021, before Ben Sulayem was elected. In line with Ben Sulayem's manifesto pledge, and under the FIA's new leadership since 2021, the organisation has undergone a comprehensive strategic transformation process, designed to radically improve internal systems and processes. It has strengthened its teams, optimised its working practices and shifted to a more efficient and financially sustainable model. Today's result, which will be published in full in the FIA's 2024 Activity Report in June, reflects this positive transition. 'Upon my election as President of the FIA, I committed to ensuring a profitable operation,' said Ben Sulayem, who won 14 Middle East Rally Championship titles in his career. 'Today, I am incredibly proud to show that we have achieved this mission, delivering the strongest set of financial results in eight years. Ben Sulayem drives major improvements to FIA's international Sporting Code
DUBAI: The Federation Internationale de l'Automobile, the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organizations worldwide, has announced that it is to make major improvements to Appendix B of its International Sporting Code following an extensive review commissioned by FIA's President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport The latest version of Appendix B of the ISC was introduced in January 2025, aligning the FIA with other global sporting organizations such as FIFA, the National Football League, and World Rugby, all of which have strong codes of conduct to protect the integrity of their respective sports. Sulayem said: 'As a former rally driver I know firsthand the range of emotions that are faced during competition. I have led an extensive and collaborative review with contributions from across the seven FIA world championships, FIA member clubs and other motor sports organizations. 'The improvements the FIA has announced today to Appendix B will ensure we continue to promote the best of sportsmanship in motor sport, while also giving stewards effective guidelines to act against individuals who may bring the sport into disrepute. The FIA will always be committed to ensuring motor sport is accessible for all our sporting family.' The ISC provides the stewards with the necessary regulatory tools to ensure they have all relevant information regarding the range of penalties that may be imposed and the procedures to be followed. This enables them to apply penalties in a consistent and transparent manner. The review was carried out in collaboration with the FIA Drivers' Committee and Ronan Morgan, its president, as well as the FIA Formula One steward chairs. Input was also received from FIA members clubs and other motor sport organizations across the seven FIA world championships. The main changes to Appendix B are: The base maximum penalty has been reduced generally from €10,000 to €5,000. This is a reduction of 50 percent. However, for FIA world championships, where multipliers are involved, the reductions will be even more significant. Stewards will have the option to fully suspend a penalty for certain types of breach, provided it is the first offense by the driver or team. Following approval via e-vote by the WMSC (World Motor Sport Council), the amended Appendix B will allow stewards to differentiate between controlled and non-controlled environments, effectively recognizing the difference between language used in 'uncontrolled' and 'controlled' environments. Controlled environments include settings such as press conferences, while uncontrolled environments refer to spontaneous comments made by drivers or teams when on track or during a rally stage. Mitigating circumstances will continue to be considered, with additional guidance available to promote consistency and fairness for all parties in the application of Appendix B. Abuse of officials will now result in sporting penalties rather than fines, aligning motor sport with other major global sports organizations. Racial and discriminatory comments will continue to be addressed firmly. Stewards will retain the supreme authority to decide which penalty to impose in the event of a breach of the ISC. Morgan said: 'Drivers are looked up to as role models by young fans and are rightly seen as ambassadors for the wider world of motor sport. How they act really does matter, but it is important to recognize that there is a difference between what is said during a race and in a press conference. 'Today's changes further strengthen the FIA's International Sporting Code, supporting our drivers by understanding the pressures they face during the heat of competition.'
