‘It's scary': Residents call for traffic safety review after fatal crash in west London
Residents in the Oakridge neighbourhood are calling for immediate traffic safety measures following a fatal motorcycle crash last week at Hyde Park Road and Fitzwilliam Boulevard. Neighbours say the intersection has long been a safety concern, and they've now launched a petition urging the city to take action. 'There have been ongoing issues at this intersection, especially for the last couple of years,' said area resident Pam Coulstring, whose home backs onto Hyde Park Road. Coulstring and neighbour Julia Da Fonseca started the petition in the wake of the crash, which happened just before 7 p.m. July 16. The motorcyclist involved died later in hospital. Police say the cause of the crash remains under investigation. 'To ask the city to reassess, to implement safety measures at the intersection of Hyde Park and Fitzwilliams Boulevard,' said Coulstring. hyde park safety A petition created by Pam Coulstring and Julia Da Fonseca calling for immediate traffic safety measures along Hyde Park Road, seen on July 21, 2025. (Reta Ismail/CTV News London) Retired paramedic Ron Liersch, whose house also back onto Hyde Park, said he's witnessed multiple accidents in the area, including one that damaged his property. 'There's been at least three other accidents. I had part of our wall taken out by an accident about a year ago, and it's really dangerous,' Liersch said. Residents say street racing and speeding are common, especially at night. 'Volume, speed — you'll hear them reaching down any time after 10 p.m. until 1 in the morning. They're racing up and down Hyde Park,' said Liersch. Bill Tucker, director of education with the Thames Valley District School Board and a longtime resident, said the concerns are valid. And with grandchildren around, we have to make sure that we're holding hands and that we're with them crossing at the lights,' said Tucker. 'We've really noticed a pick-up in the speed and the traffic in this neighbourhood.' Ward 8 Coun. Steve Lehman said he's aware of the issue and has been in contact with city staff. 'I work constantly with our roads, our traffic folks, to see how we can mitigate these concerns and work toward a safer city,' said Lehman. The petition calls for a traffic calming assessment and will be submitted to city hall for consideration.

‘Totally avoidable': Friends upset after losing Las Vegas man in crash involving suspected drunk driver
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Friends are upset while mourning the loss of a loved one in a crash involving another man who faces a DUI charge. Witnesses told 8 News Now the driver had cans of alcohol in his vehicle. Kyle Burrell, 35, was riding his motorcycle to his girlfriend's place on July 4 at around midnight when he collided with a suspected drunk driver in a pickup truck near the N. Durango Drive exit off the 215 Beltway. Motorcyclist killed in northwest Las Vegas valley crash; other driver arrested 'Totally avoidable,' Rachel Green, Burrell's friend, said. 'There's too many things at play that you can make other choices,' Tannie Wichern, Burrell's girlfriend, said. Wichern said Burrell was known to his friends as a kind and generous soul. Only 35 years old, he still had so much life to give. 'I feel like he was stolen from us, way too early,' Wichern said. 'We were robbed, and a lot of people were robbed of him.' A witness who shot video from that night shared it with 8 News Now. It shows emergency responders treating the victim and police talking to the suspected drunk driver, who was in a Chevrolet Silverado pickup. According to the witness, they were the first ones on scene and called 911. They said the driver was throwing cans of alcohol out of his pick-up truck, instead of helping the biker. 'There's Uber, there's Lyft. There's everything else. Why would you drive drunk knowing that you're jeopardizing literally everybody else on the street and yourself? Makes no sense,' Green said. Wichern added, 'Most of the time, not even themselves because they end up being okay.' According to highway patrol, the other driver was speeding when he entered the left turn lane at the North Durango-CC215 exit at the same time as Burrell. Burrell was sent flying to the pavement when the truck and the motorcycle collided. It's a heavy loss for his friends and others who knew him. 'These are things we can prevent as a community, as a society. When you get behind the wheel, we have a responsibility to drive safely,' Ofelia Markarian, Burrell's attorney, said. Nevada State Police Highway Patrol did not identify the person they arrested on a DUI charge in a media release. 8 News Now asked the agency why, since it has in previous releases. A spokesman said the policy has recently changed and the case is under investigation. Burrell's friends set up a GoFundMe to help pay for his funeral. ‘Makes zero sense': Outrage after accused drunk driver in fatal Las Vegas crash only faces DUI charge
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A driver who reportedly failed a sobriety test after he hit and killed a motorcyclist was only charged with driving under the influence and not death, according to court records. 8 News Now has confirmed the driver of the pick-up truck accused of striking 35-year-old Kyle Burrell was Carlos Roberto Hernandez. 'Totally avoidable': Friends upset after losing Las Vegas man in crash involving suspected drunk driver Burrell was riding his motorcycle on July 4 around midnight. He was getting off the North Durango exit on the 215 when a speeding driver in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado crashed into him, according to Nevada State Police Highway Patrol. The impact reportedly sent Burrell off his bike. Nevada Highway Patrol said he died at a hospital as a result of the crash injuries. 'Makes zero sense as to why the defendant was only charged with just a DUI misdemeanor,' Ofelia Markarian, Burrell's attorney, said. 'This is a clear situation where it's a DUI resulting in a fatality. It makes zero sense. I've never seen anything like this.' According to court documents 8 News Now obtained, Hernandez had 'red bloodshot watery eyes' and a strong smell of an 'intoxicating beverage.' Police also observed two green Buzz Balls next to his truck. A witness who was first on the scene provided 8 News Now with video of the crash. They previously said Hernandez was tossing the Buzz Balls out of his vehicle right after he crashed. Hernandez admitted to marijuana usage at UMC Trauma, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. 'The defendant was charged with a misdemeanor DUI. He was released on his own recognizance, meaning he did not have to post bail, when he just killed somebody,' Markarian said. Given all the facts investigators collected at the scene, Markarian said authorities dropped the ball in not charging Hernandez with DUI resulting in death. 'I've never seen a situation where a defendant is undercharged, with the amount of evidence that we have in this case,' she said. 'We have a dead body.' In court documents, investigators with Nevada State Police Highway Patrol stated if Hernandez is found at fault, the charges would 'possibly be upgraded to DUI resulting in death.' In a statement, Hernandez's attorney Paola Armeni told 8 News Now: 'While the loss of life is always tragic, an investigation is ongoing and we should be careful not to rush to judgment when all the facts are unknown.'
