‘The Woman With Fifty Faces' Review: Painted Like a French Girl
The French author and artist Jean Cocteau was enthralled by a mysterious woman named Maria Lani, but his attempts to capture her likeness during a 1928 sitting were agonizing. 'Every time you take your eyes off her she changes,' he wrote. 'How do you expect me to draw her?' Cocteau was far from the only one to try. 'The Woman With Fifty Faces,' a graphic novel by Jonathan Lackman and Zachary J. Pinson, is based on the riveting true story of Lani, who, with her husband, Max Ilyin, persuaded some 50 artists in Parisian society to paint, draw or sculpt her. The remarkable roster included Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse and Chaim Soutine. Only Pablo Picasso, it seems, turned them down. The couple claimed that Lani was a silent-film actress from Berlin and that the artwork would be featured in a Hollywood film. But there was no such film, and Lani was not, in fact, a movie star. She was born Maria Geleniewicz in 1895 in Poland, where her Jewish family escaped violent pogroms. At age 24 she met Ilyin and the two hatched a plan to reinvent themselves in France. They succeeded wildly: Lani achieved fame as an artists' muse, and by the end of 1930 she and Ilyin had mounted exhibitions, in Europe and the United States, of the various portraits of her. Afterward, Lani and Ilyin disappeared from high society. In the run-up to World War II, they helped Jewish refugees in Paris obtain immigration papers before fleeing the Nazis themselves. The pair settled in America, where they nearly willed their fake movie into spectacular existence—Greta Garbo was to play the lead—before the project collapsed due to lack of financing.

Zawe Ashton and fiancé Tom Hiddleston expecting second child, Entertainment News
Zawe Ashton is expecting her second child with fiance Tom Hiddleston. The 40-year-old actress shared the news with Vogue on Saturday (June 7), alongside a maternity photo shoot in which she appears in a pale blue Emilia Wickstead gown with a matching cape. Zawe confirmed she would debut her baby bump later this weekend at the SXSW festival, saying of her red-carpet look: "I feel really lucky to be working with someone that I know and who's been such a champion of me at this sensitive red-carpet dressing moment. "I feel like I'll be very held on an evening where, as an expectant mother, you can feel a little bit exposed." Zawe and Tom, who have been engaged since 2022, welcomed their first child together later that same year. She and the 44-year-old have not publicly disclosed their child's name or gender. Zawe, who has been a long-time admirer of Wickstead's work, also told Vogue: "We met years ago at the British Fashion Awards when she dressed me and we attended together. "We had the most fabulous night and instantly felt like kindred spirits. We aligned so much on fashion and womanhood, and I've always loved her designs. They embody a seamless blend of classic and contemporary, and she's also just an incredible craftsperson. "You feel the level of detail that goes into every piece when you wear them." [[nid:700641]] Wickstead, 42, who designed the maternity gown Ashton will wear at SXSW, described the commission as "especially meaningful and full circle". "Zawe wore a soft pink gown from us during her last pregnancy - quietly glowing, with a little secret only she knew," Wickstead said. She added: "Now, to celebrate her second in this beautiful blue from our pre-fall collection, and to share it with the world, feels like a sweet continuation of that story. I'm so honoured to be part of it. "Zawe is also such a vibrant, clever and special friend and muse of the brand - she's been wearing Emilia Wickstead for years, and I love being part of her journey." A source told Us Weekly following the birth of Zawe and Tom's first child they are "loving being new parents and are filled with joy". They added the pair "have been having the struggles of new parents and aren't sleeping much but are thrilled". Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast in November 2023, Tom said fatherhood had changed his outlook on life. He added: "I think I probably knew it would, but I could never have imagined how deeply it would until it happened," he said. "And yeah, it's before and after."

Miley Cyrus reveals latest tattoo is tribute to her mum Tish
Miley Cyrus has revealed her latest tattoo is a tribute to her mother Tish Cyrus. The 32-year-old singer who has a range of body art has had the word 'muse' inked on her shoulder after describing her mum in the same way during an appearance at the Chanel Tribeca Festival Women's Luncheon in New York City. She was attending the event, held at the Greenwich Hotel Courtyard on 6 June, to celebrate the Through Her Lens programme. Speaking to People, Miley said about her new tattoo: 'It says 'muse'. And it's really for her, because my mom is my muse.' She added: 'My mom was going to get matching with me, but she was out of town.' Miley debuted the dainty new shoulder tattoo – inked by artist Michelle Santana at Bang Bang Tattoo – before the event via Instagram. The tattoo adds to her extensive collection of body art, which she recently spoke about in an interview with the New York Times, expressing mixed feelings about some of her older designs. 'A mistake that I made that I still think about is like 80 percent of my tattoos,' she said. Miley added: 'I don't regret them enough to laser them, but some of them, like... I mean I love my cat, but like, I didn't need that... there's just a few I could do without.' Miley's 'muse' tribute comes shortly after speculation circulated about a falling-out between her and Tish, 58, when it appeared the singer's mum had unfollowed her daughter on social media. Miley addressed the rumours in a statement on her Instagram Stories in May. 'I rarely comment on rumours, but my mama and I are too tight for anything to ever come between us,' she wrote. Miley added: 'She's my best friend. Like a lot of moms, she doesn't know how to work her phone and somehow unfollowed me — simple, coincidental, and uninteresting.' Tish later confirmed to People the unfollow was accidental, saying she had 'no idea how that happened' and had since corrected it. Reflecting on her priorities, Miley said: 'Now, in my thirties, family is my priority above all else. I'm at peace knowing bridges have been built and time has done a lot of healing. Grateful for the good health and love that flows through my family.' Miley also spoke about her upcoming visual album, Something Beautiful, which is set to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month. The project traces different periods of her life through film. Asked whether she viewed her life in eras, Miley told People: 'I don't see anything, I feel like, with a divide. 'I do love this flow of whatever is real in the moment totally is valuable and exists and that's what the movie is a celebration of is that everything gets to coexist in not a way that's lost but actually found.'
