Scarlett Johansson's ‘SNL' Season 50 finale abruptly ends — leaving viewers wondering who's saying goodbye

Goodbye from New York? The 'Saturday Night Live' Season 50 finale came to an abrupt end on May 17, leaving audiences speculating who from the cast may be leaving the show for good. Host Scarlett Johansson closed out the show with a traditional goodbye alongside the rest of the cast. However, the NBC variety show then quickly cut to a commercial for 'Suits L.A.' The program ended at 1:02 a.m., two minutes past the normal ending time on the East Coast. 5 Scarlett Johansson's 'SNL' finale came to an abrupt end Saturday night. @nbcsnl/X 5 Fans were left wondering who in the cast could be leaving the show for good. @nbcsnl/X The snafu led to audiences speculating who from the cast is leaving the show for good. After all, many stars tend to exit Studio 8H for the last time following a series finale. 'Lorne Michaels, wherever you are,' Johansson said onstage. 'You're not gonna want me to single you out, but congratulations. You are a singular man.' Bowen Yang, for his part, emotionally hugged castmate Sarah Sherman during the closing. 'If Bowen is leaving I won't be shocked,' one viewer wrote on X, formerly Twitter. Another person wrote: 'It looked like Bowen was having long heartfelt hugs with everyone so he's my only guess to be leaving. Would explain some of the sketches they did for him [tonight].' 5 Bowen Yang previously fueled 'SNL' exit rumors in a People article. @nbcsnl/X In April, Yang blatantly told People that he would leave the show 'at some point.' 'SNL, it's just this moving, living, breathing thing,' he said. 'Especially after the 50th, I'm seeing what life after the show is like and how beautiful it is, and how so many people, no matter how long they were at the show, are just with their families and loving their lives and not letting the years take away any of that experience for them.' Mikey Day and Heidi Gardner also appeared sentimental and gave multiple hugs to the cast and crew. It's still unclear if Johansson's latest hosting gig was husband Colin Jost and Michael Che's last time behind the 'Weekend Update' desk, too. Fans have speculated that the pair will take the monumental 50th season as the opportunity to officially retire. In February, Che even proclaimed 'I'm not coming back, don't worry,' during a stand-up show at the University of Rochester. In one notable moment, the 'Jurassic Park Rebirth' actress, 40, joined Che, 41, and Jost, 42, for their 'Weekend Update' segment during the NBC variety show. 'Before I tell another joke, I wanna take this opportunity to apologize to someone I hurt, Scarlett, can you come out here?' Che asked. 'Y'know, last time we did joke-swap, I made Colin do some tasteless jokes comparing your vagina to Costco roast beef.' 'The fact is I was just lashing out because I'm jealous,' he joked. 'I've never even seen a human vagina. And notice I said 'human,' because I once spent the summer on a farm. You feel me?' 5 Johansson made history after hosting the show for the seventh time. NBC / SNL Che then went in for a high-five, which Johansson declined. 'And, Colin, I'm sorry too. Because I owe you everything,' Jost forced Che to say. 'When Colin discovered me, I was selling crack outside the Bronx Zoo. And now look at me, selling crack outside the American Girl doll store.' In Dec. 2024, Johansson made a cameo backstage while Che and Jost did their annual joke swap. The actress was given a heads up that Che would make a jab about her, but she didn't know how vulgar it really would be. 5 The actress got revenge on Weekend Update host Michael Che for his previous jokes about her. NBC / SNL At the time, Che made Jost read off the teleprompter: 'Costco has removed the roast beef sandwich from its menu. But I ain't trippin'. I've been eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid.' Jost and Johansson, who married in 2020, are parents of son Cosmo, 3. She also shares daughter Rose, 10, with ex-husband Romain Dauriac. 'I feel like it's almost my responsibility to come up with some way to burn Michael back,' Johansson told Vanity Fair in a profile just days earlier. 'Retaliation, I'd say, should be expected. Others on the show could support this desire. Know what I mean?' In March, she told InStyle: 'I just can't believe that they went there. I was like — it was so gross. It was really gross,' she went on. 'And, like, old-school gross.' Johansson's episode also featured Mike Myers and Bad Bunny as the musical guest. Johansson made history on Saturday night, hosting the show for the seventh time. This made her the female star to have hosted 'SNL' the most times, beating out Tina Fey and Drew Barrymore. She previously hosted in January 2006, April 2007, November 2010, May 2015, March 2017 and December 2019. She's made cameos throughout the historic show, including doing multiple sketches for its three-hour 50th anniversary special, which aired on Feb. 16. Alec Baldwin, meanwhile, leads the most times for a male star hosting with a whopping 17 episodes.

SNL writers are slammed as racist for 'two b*****s versus a gorilla' skit

Saturday Night Live has been slammed for a tone deaf skit describing two black women as 'b***hes.' Quinta Brunson and Ego Nwodim took part in the skit capitalizing on the viral meme '100 men vs a gorilla ', playing two women arguing with a gorilla inside an enclosure. 'Why you starin' like you got a problem? Can I have my face back?' Brunson asks. 'You think this the first time I've fought a 400 pound b***h? I used to work at Lane Bryant,' she adds, referring to the plus sized women's clothing store. Nwodim then interjects, adding: 'You up here on all fours lookin' like LGBT and the Q, sassy.' During the skit, the women refer to each other as b***h as an apparent term of endearment, with Nwodim telling Brunson 'that was good b***h' after she made a joke at the expense of the gorilla. Brunson answered: 'Thank you b***h.' Separately, she said to the gorilla, 'you supposed to be all big and strong? Stand up. It's giving one of the gworls' - which is a slang word for 'girls' to refer to women, especially those within the black trans community. The sketch has been widely panned on social media, with a post from the SNL team inundated with criticism. 'Incredibly offensive and ignorant to address any woman as a B**CH from an entire television network,' one wrote. Another added: 'Y'all might as well go ahead and say ''two black b**ches vs a gorilla.' A third critic said 'this don't sit right with me at all. ''Can I have my face back?'' 'LGBT and Q'' + fat shaming? ''It's giving one of the girls''. No way they are this tone deaf... This is flat out disrespectful.' 'This had to go through multiple people after being written, and not a single one of them thought this was a bad idea?' another asked. 'They're back to mocking black women using two black women? Yuck.' Others pointed out that the joke started as 100 men vs the gorilla, yet has somehow devolved into 'two black women' vs the gorilla. The initial meme began on X and swept the internet last week, with people like Elon Musk and MrBeast weighing in. two bitches vs. a gorilla — Saturday Night Live - SNL (@nbcsnl) May 4, 2025 The sketch has been widely panned on social media, with a post from the SNL team inundated with criticism It posed the question about whether 100 men could take down a single gorilla, to which Musk said he'd be willing to volunteer. 'Sure. What's the worst that could happen?' he asked. Mike Tyson said the gorilla 'would get f***ed up' if it had to go up against 100 heavyweight champions. But critics say Brunson and Nwodim's skit was 'rooted in anti-Black racism. An African and a Caribbean cosplaying a stereotypical Black American woman is not funny.' has approached NBC for comment. Critics say Brunson and Nwodim's skit was 'rooted in anti-Black racism. An African and a Caribbean cosplaying a stereotypical Black American woman is not funny' Supporters argued that Brunson likely writes her own skits and must have approved of the sketch before it went to air. Others argued that one of the most controversial lines - 'can I have my face back?' - is a common phrase to call out a person who is staring too long, and does not have the racist connotations that others have interpreted it as. 'Maybe it's a generational thing?' one person queried while defending the phrase. Others accused critics of simply being too 'woke' or sensitive to enjoy the humor.

'White Lotus' star gives public shoutout to 'SNL' cast member who mocked her appearance

"White Lotus" star Aimee Lou Wood gave a public shutout to "Saturday Night Live" cast member Sarah Sherman, days after the comedian poked fun at her appearance on the late-night sketch show. "Thank you for the beautiful flowers @sarahsquirm," Wood, 31, captioned a photo on her Instagram story, which featured a spring-themed bouquet. During the "SNL" episode over the weekend, the cast took aim at the Trump administration with a parody sketch titled, "The White POTUS." Jon Hamm portrayed Robert Kennedy, Jr., but he appeared to be dressed like Walton Goggins' character Ric in this skit. He said, "I've been having these insane ideas, like what if we took all the fluoride out of the drinking water? What would that do to people's teeth?" Sherman, who portrayed Wood's character, Chelsea, sported a brunette wig and oversized teeth for her impression and responded, "Fluoride? What's that?" The skit prompted a response from Wood, who said she felt the spoof was "mean." "But whilst in honest mode – I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny xo," she wrote before adding, "Felt righteous might delete later X." "So to conclude today's rant: @hbo - kind and supportive and never wronged me so leave them alone, @nbcsnl - mean," she added. "Such a shame cuz I had such a great time watching it a couple weeks ago. Yes, take the piss for sure – that's what the show is about - but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?" On Sunday, Wood told her Instagram followers that the show had apologized for the mishap. "I've had apologies from SNL," she wrote before sharing behind-the-scenes clips from Mike White's series. However, fans were led to believe the spoof was still bothering her as she was photographed crying in London on Monday. Though Wood later clarified she was upset about something "unrelated." "Thank you so much," she wrote in a post to her Instagram story, where she shared a message from TV presenter Ashley James applauding her for speaking out against "Saturday Night Live." "Just to say, I actually wasn't crying about anything that the papers made out I was crying about. Something completely unrelated." Fox News Digital's Tracy Wright and Janelle Ash contributed to this post.

'White Lotus' star claims SNL apologized after 'mean and unfunny' parody

"White Lotus" star Aimee Lou Wood says she received an apology from "Saturday Night Live" after the show aired a parody skit, "The White Potus," and mocked her appearance. On Sunday, Wood took to her Instagram stories and claimed that the show had made contact to apologize, a rare move by the comedy show. "I've had apologies from SNL," she wrote before sharing behind-the-scenes clips from Mike White's series. During a pre-taped skit that aired Saturday, the show spoofed the Trump family, depicting them on vacation in Thailand with key players from the president's administration dropping in. "SNL" host Jon Hamm played Robert Kennedy, Jr., but appeared to be dressed like Walton Goggins' "White Lotus" character, Rick, as he shared animated thoughts about the future with Wood's character, Chelsea, played by Sarah Sherman. "I've had apologies from SNL." "I've been having these insane ideas, like what if we took all the fluoride out of the drinking water? What would that do to people's teeth?" Sherman donned a long brunette wig and false, oversized teeth for her impression of Wood's character. "Fluoride? What's that?" she asked Rick. Wood aired her grievances online in a series of Instagram stories posted Sunday morning. "But whilst in honest mode – I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny xo," she wrote before adding, "Felt righteous might delete later X." Wood added, "So to conclude today's rant: @hbo - kind and supportive and never wronged me so leave them alone, @nbcsnl - mean." She continued, "Such a shame cuz I had such a great time watching it a couple weeks ago. Yes, take the piss for sure – that's what the show is about - but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?" Wood posted a few replies from her direct messages. Fans noted that "SNL" was "clearly" mocking her "appearance/accent," to which Wood wrote, "At least get the accent right seriously. I respect accuracy even if it's mean." "The White Lotus" star Walter Goggins praised the "SNL" team, and wrote, "Hahahahahhahaha Amazzzingggg" before sharing the sketch on his own Instagram account. "Smashing. Jon … I knew I was miscast."
