Vaccine additive thimerosal deemed unsafe by the CDC: 3 things to know

The United States federal government may soon ban vaccines that use an ingredient called is a preservative that — due to questions about its safety throughout the decades — has mostly been avoided by vaccine it still features in some flu shots, which has prompted questions about how a potentially impending ban on thimerosal may affect vaccine availability and June 24, 2025, an advisory committee for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) voted against the use of an additive called thimerosal in their presentation, the advisory panel called thimerosal 'a known neurotoxin' and advised that banning vaccines using this ingredient would be 'a good place to start with Making America Healthy Again.'Thimerosal is an additive used as a preservative — that is, a substance that helps keep the active ingredients in vaccines fresh and why is it controversial, and what do we really know about its safety?Medical News Today examined what is known about thimerosal's current use and safety profile and answered these and other questions with the assistance of Monica Gandhi, MD, MPH, an infectious disease specialist and professor of medicine at the University of California, San is thimerosal a controversial vaccine ingredient?'Thimerosal is a mercury-based preservative that can help vaccines last longer,' Gandhi is precisely what renders it controversial, since, as the World Health Organization (WHO) notes, mercury is a liquid metal that poses various risks to human can affect a number of bodily systems, including the nervous system, digestive system, immune system, the lungs, kidneys, skin, and 'high levels of mercury can be toxic to a developing fetus, for eample,' Gandhi pointed this reason, she added, 'thimerosal has been taken out of most childhood vaccines but can still be found in some including the multidose influenza vaccine.'However, thimerosal contains a very specific, modified form of mercury called ethylmercury, which, according to the WHO, 'does not pose a health risk,' as it quickly breaks down after entering the body, and is subsequently thimerosal cause autism or neurodevelopmental conditions?Another part of the thimerosal controversy is the fact that it was mistakenly linked to autism by a now-discredited and retracted study.'Multiple studies have shown no safety concerns with thimerosal in terms of causing autism or neurodevelopmental issues,' said Gandhi. The advisory panel calling for thimerosal's ban appeared to further fuel the controversy by citing a publication whose alleged author has since explained in media interviews does not exist, leading to its removal from the presentation.'[T]his reference —showing an association between thimerosal and neurodevelopmental delays in animals — did not exist and was subsequently removed from the presentation when the error was pointed out,' Gandhi to Reuters, Katherine L. O'Brien, MD, MPH, director of the Department of Immunization, Vaccines, and Biologicals at the WHO, emphasized that, based on current medical evidence, the organization finds thimerosal thimerosal considered safe?'Thimerosal has been reviewed multiple times by multiple agencies, including WHO, and it's clear from the evidence that there is no evidence of harm from the use of thimerosal.'— Katherine L. O'Brien, MD, MPHHow might banning thimerosal affect vaccine availability? While it is largely considered safe, in the U.S., thimerosal is already rarely used in vaccines. In 1999, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Public Health Service issued a call to remove thimerosal from most childhood ingredient has thus been avoided, as a precautionary measure, since 2001, according to the only exception to this, as Gandhi pointed out, is the multidose flu shot. 'Before we knew thimerosal was safe in multiple animal and human studies, it was removed from almost all childhood vaccines. However, thimerosal is still in influenza vaccine, especially the ones that come in multidose vials, since the agent serves as powerful preservative protecting the vaccine from bacterial or fungal contamination.'— Monica Gandhi, MD, MPHThe greatest concern with banning thimerosal entirely is that this action could severely affect vaccine availability in the community.'Banning thimerosal is simply not indicated by the scientific evidence,' Gandhi insisted.'Moreover, this could result in less stock of influenza vaccine being produced or a move away from the multidose vials, which could limit vaccine availability of the flu vaccine this coming respiratory season,' she told to national immunization data provided by the CDC, flu vaccinations among children in the U.S. are already on the decline, even as flu cases were surging significantly during the last flu these shots become less available during the next flu season, this viral infection, which is typically easily kept at bay, could cause more severe issues among the to the CDC, the flu can cause serious complications in young children, including pneumonia and inflammation of the brain (encephalitis).

Woman Reveals How a Lip Flip Impacted Her Sex Life as She Details Procedure's Shocking Side Effects (Exclusive)

In May, aesthetic nurse injector Brooke Carrero posted a TikTok video detailing the side effects of a lip flip, which involves injecting neurotoxin to the area above the upper lip for a plumper, fuller effect Carrero used her video as a PSA to patients interested in the enhancement, which she said affected how she drank water and pronounced certain words Speaking with PEOPLE exclusively, Carrero reveals how the effects, which lasted around 48 hours, also impacted her sex life: "My skill set probably went from a 10 down to a six"Brooke Carrero, a registered nurse trained in aesthetic injections, is getting loose lipped about one of the most common cosmetic procedures. She posted a viral TikTok video in May revealing some of the side effects caused by the cosmetic enhancement, which involves injecting neurotoxin, a substance used by injection brands like Botox, to relax the surrounding areas of the upper lip to make them flip upward, giving them a fuller appearance. Right now, Botox is not FDA-approved to treat the lips, unlike fillers, which is why it is considered "off-label" for lip flips as opposed to its relation to treating crow's feet and frown and forehead lines. Though, that doesn't mean lip flips are entirely off the market, causing curiosity around the procedure to grow; a report published by the National Library of Medicine discovered a 33% monthly increase in the search volume for lip flips from 2014-2024. Carrero, who is based in Philadelphia and practices under Becker Plastic Surgery and Dr. Kirk Lozada, shocked viewers when she revealed how the treatment made it more difficult to do ordinary activities, such as drinking out of a straw, brushing her teeth, applying lip gloss and even pronouncing words with Bs and Ps. But the most surprising admission from Carrero, 34, was how it impacted her sex life, a topic she was cheeky about in her TikTok video ("You can't blow out a candle, which means you can't blow anything. Use your imagination there," she joked), but open about in her interview with PEOPLE. "My skill set probably went from a 10 down to a six," she says. But, "I feel like I've gotten used to the way that my mouth kind of moves," she says, adding that her husband is so used to her experimenting with different treatments that he "laughs at me with my side effects." Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Luckily, Carrero notes that side effects usually last one to two days, while the lip flip itself can last up to three to four weeks. A playing factor is the number of units of neurotoxin injected into the patient. For her clients, Carrero commonly uses around four to six units (each of which costs around $14 at Carrero's practice), which the American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgery also suggests. Yet currently, Carrero has 16 units injected around her mouth — and yes, she did them herself. "I am somebody that needs to try everything and expose myself to complications so I'm able to relate to my patients," she tells PEOPLE on why she goes to extremes for research purposes. is now available in the Apple App Store! After her video went viral, Carrero received tons of comments from people thanking her for cluing them in on the temporary hinderances of a lip flip. "No one tells you this!" one person wrote, while another person agreed, sharing that they wish they knew this before getting the treatment. At the end of the day, Carrero approaches the conversation around cosmetic treatments with an open mind. "There's nothing that you need to have done, like nobody needs a lip flip and nobody needs cosmetic procedures, but it's a matter of want. If it makes you feel good, don't let anyone make you feel otherwise." Read the original article on People

With Flu Shot Vote, Kennedy's Vaccine Skepticism Comes Full Circle

A decade before he became President Trump's health secretary, the environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. appeared on a talk show hosted by Dr. Mehmet Oz to promote his latest book, 'Thimerosal: Let the Science Speak.' The book, published in 2014, explored an obscure mercury-based preservative, thimerosal, that was removed from most vaccines, but not flu vaccines, more than two decades ago. Dr. Oz noted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had deemed the vaccines that still contained thimerosal 'safe and effective' and said they did 'not present a public health risk.' Mr. Kennedy did not buy it. 'We found 500 peer-reviewed studies,' he insisted. 'Virtually every one of them said that thimerosal is a potent neurotoxin that should not be in vaccines.' On Thursday, the new members of the C.D.C.'s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, hand-selected by Mr. Kennedy after he fired all 17 members of the previous panel, decided it would longer recommend annual flu shots that contain it. Thimerosal's appearance on the committee's agenda in the first place shocked public health leaders, who have long considered the matter settled. But it was not a surprise to people who have followed Mr. Kennedy closely. Thimerosal started Mr. Kennedy down a path of questioning vaccine safety, and Thursday's vote was the culmination of a long personal journey. It offers a window into how, as secretary, he is pursuing his own passions and installing old allies in positions of influence. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
