Ben Houchen got 'no reply' to new North Tees hospital meeting request letters

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen says he has written to the health secretary "13 times" about plans for a new hospital but has yet to receive a direct reply. The Conservative peer, who was being quizzed by BBC Tees listeners, was asked by a caller for an update on the project at North Tees in Stockton, which one described as "not fit for purpose".Houchen highlighted the importance of government involvement in delivering on his election promise, but he said his requests over the last year for a meeting with Wes Streeting remained unanswered. The Department of Health has been approached for comment. University Hospitals Tees said its teams were working together to develop a plan. Houchen was responding to listener Andy, from Ingleby Barwick, who said: "I just wanted to know what was going on because it is not fit for purpose for the residents in Stockton at the moment."I have been recently, all the ceiling tiles are falling in. It's very old and dated."BBC Sounds: Ben Houchen gives North Tees hospital updateExplaining his attempts to contact the health secretary, Houchen said: "I said I just wanted a meeting to talk to you about the need for a new hospital. I have not even received a reply. 13 times over the last 12 months."The only reply that I got, which was about a month ago, was his office, which replied saying: 'The secretary of state can't meet you and we will let you meet a junior minister at some point in the future'."Now to me that is not on." 'Speaks volumes' Houchen said to build a "brand new state-of-the-art hospital" that served the Tees Valley region and beyond "requires government involvement.""A new hospital is going to cost potentially £1bn and the secretary of state has to be involved in that process," he said."The fact that the secretary of state doesn't want to meet me speaks volumes." Houchen was asked if he had raised the issue during his meetings with the prime minister and other mayors in Downing said: "I raise it regularly with anybody that will listen to me, but ultimately because they have taken back control of the NHS the Secretary of State is ultimately the decision maker in the NHS."A University Hospitals Tees spokesperson said: "Our estates and clinical teams are working collaboratively to develop a strategic outline case to support our ambitions." The foundation has doubled their fundraising efforts to $80 million - the new facility is expected to be 150,000 square feet, three times the size of the current hospital. Taya DaNeef, who works in the emergency room at the hospital says a new building would be a welcome sign to those who work the front lines. 'We were built for 7,000 visits, we're over 35,000 in the E.R.,' said DaNeef. 'Every single year with the same footprint that we were originally built for.' With a growing population in Simcoe-Grey, DaNeef added that more space is needed. 'We are still doing hallway medicine which is not great for privacy or for care,' said daNeef. 'It doesn't allow for private conversations between patients and families and physicians.' Frank Cerisano, CEO of the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation is hoping to rally the community to raise funds for the new building. 'We want to stay focused on the $80 million,' said Cerisano. 'We want to get as many supporters as possible, big or small, involved, engaged,' asking people to be part of this newer vision. Brand new goal means a brand-new design with plans including 47 private rooms in the hospital. Cerisano added the relaunch has brought more people together in hopes of achieving that goal. 'What else is different is that our new volunteers are new donors, the momentum on this campaign is just building and keeps on going,' said Cerisano. Brian Saunderson, MPP of Simcoe-Grey, said hospitals play a crucial role in the region. 'Hospitals are a part of the critical DNA in a local health care ecosystem and with that we get the doctors, frontline staff, family health teams,' said Saunderson. MRI machines, C-T scanners and more diagnostic equipment are all part of the plan - if the community can raise enough. 'Whether it's from lemonade stands, kids are bringing in their $5 that they're getting for their birthdays, or the big donors, every single dollar has accounted for something new for our hospital.' Said DaNeef. Wednesday's relaunch raised $7 million to kickstart the fundraiser. If the campaign hits its target, construction could begin by spring 2006 with hopes of opening a brand-new hospital by 2029.

Land purchased for Basingstoke hospital construction in 2037

The chief executive of an NHS trust has said she is "delighted" that it will be able to purchase land for a new Whitfield, the head of Hampshire Hospitals, confirmed it would buy a site near junction seven of the M3 for a new facility in January she expressed "disappointment" with the government decision to delay construction until said there was no update on the date of the build, but added that that the land purchase does "at least feel like progress". Hampshire Hospitals is expected to receive at least £2bn of funding as part of the Government's New Hospital it is part of the third wave of the scheme, meaning work will not begin on the new building for at least 12 Whitfield said they needed to secure this land so that the option "doesn't disappear on us".She admitted this did not guarantee that the hospital would be built at the site."It is entirely possible that in a decades time the world might have changed a bit," she said."It's very clear that Basingstoke needs a new hospital and it will happen."She said health minister Karin Smyth visited the trust recently and confirmed it "will get built". 'Utterly bonkers' Roy Lilley, a former NHS trust boss, who is now an independent health commentator, is less optimistic and does not think the hospital will be built."It's just totally and utterly bonkers," he said, adding that the government and economy could change by 2037."The money that we are spending at the moment to prop these places up, we could actually use that money to build new hospitals," Mr Lilley said. Kit Malthouse, Conservative MP for North West Hampshire said: "Waiting until 2037 is not just unacceptable — it's senseless. "Forecasting that far ahead is unreliable; by then we'll have had three general elections and a completely different spending landscape. Delaying now risks killing the project entirely."Our population has grown and will grow further. Our existing hospital buildings at Basingstoke are outdated and under strain. "Other communities in the national programme are seeing their hospitals delivered much sooner — why not ours?" A spokesperson from the Department of Health and Social Care said: "The New Hospital Programme we inherited was undeliverable, with funding due to run out in March."This government has confirmed a funding plan and an honest, realistic timetable to put us on track to deliver the rebuild of Hampshire Hospital, and we will work closely with the trust as we progress through our delivery plan."We have also allocated £1bn to address the backlog of critical NHS maintenance and repairs to help ensure hospitals are safe and sustainable."
