Sen. Mike Lee posts, deletes fake Fed Chair Powell resignation letter: Reports

Mike Lee, R-Utah, on Tuesday reportedly shared and then hastily deleted a fake, apparently AI-generated letter purporting to show Jerome Powell resigning as chairman of the Federal Reserve. The phony letter — addressed to "The President" — featured a garbled Fed seal with non-English characters and a slightly misshapen depiction of an eagle, as well as some unusual text spacing. "After much reflection, I have decided to resign from my position as Chair of the Board of governors of the Federal Reserve System, effective at the close of business today, July 22, 2025," the letter read. It was posted on Lee's verified personal X account, @BasedMikeLee, according to journalists at Politico who took screenshots of the post before it was deleted. "Powell's out!" Lee wrote in between two emojis of flashing red sirens, the screenshots show. Powell has not resigned. A reporter for The Hill wrote on X that Lee said he deleted his post "out of an abundance of caution" because he was not sure if the letter was legitimate. Lee's office did not immediately respond to CNBC's requests for comment. A spokesperson for the Fed told CNBC, "We don't have any comment on the fake letter." The letter surfaced as President Donald Trump has bludgeoned Powell with criticism and urged him to resign his leadership role at the central bank. Trump wants the Fed to sharply lower interest rates to spur economic growth. But the Fed so far has declined to cut rates this year. Benny Johnson, a prominent conservative media personality, also briefly posted the fake Powell letter, but acknowledged the mistake in a subsequent post. "The Jerome Powell letter is fake. Please don't share it. Sorry. Bad look," Johnson wrote. "I still want Jerome Powell to resign really bad," he added.

Following the conclusion of Squid Game, which is Netflix's most-watched show of all time, fans of the thriller are urged to check out another popular Korean series. The sci-fi show, which is returning for a second season after first premiering in 2022, has ranked among Netflix 's Top 10 most-watched non-English series of all time. Titled All of Us Are Dead, the thriller series has been billed as a 'catastrophic coming-of-age story in which teens at Hyosan High band together to survive a zombie outbreak'. The official Netflix synopsis reads: 'A high school becomes ground zero for a zombie virus outbreak. Trapped students must fight their way out — or turn into one of the rabid infected.' After season one scored an impressive 89% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, All of Us Are Dead is making a triumphant comeback. Netflix shared the exciting production update earlier today, posting on X: 'All of Us Are Dead Season 2 is NOW IN PRODUCTION. 'Starring Park Ji-hu, Yoon Chan-young, Cho Yi-hyun, Lomon, Lee Min-jae, Kim Si-eun, Roh Jae-won, and Yoon Ga-i.' Taking to the comments, fans expressed their excitement over the news after what has felt like a long wait. There were plenty of comments like 'FINALLY', 'CAN'T WAIT' and 'ABOUT TIME'. The second episode, featuring the cast of Metro In Dino, had a combined 2 million views across its first two weeks—but this included cumulative views for both the first and second episodes. Netflix did not share specific numbers for the second episode alone. By the third week, the episode featuring cricketers Gautam Gambhir, Yuzvendra Chahal and Rishabh Pant saw further decline. Netflix stated the total cumulative views for all three episodes had dropped to 1.2 million. That downward trend has continued, with the last two episodes now missing from the platform's global charts altogether. For context, the final entry on the most recent global non-English Top 10 list pulled in 1.4 million views in two weeks. Familiar Pattern from Past Seasons This isn't the first time the show has seen a strong start followed by a fall in numbers. Season 2 began well, but after four episodes, viewership slipped. The episode featuring Kareena and Karisma Kapoor marked a turning point, as total views across the first four episodes during week four dipped to 900k, despite 4.2 million hours watched. Season 1 saw something similar. The fourth episode, featuring Vicky and Sunny Kaushal, resulted in a drop to 1.2 million cumulative views across four episodes, with 3.9 million viewing hours. What's Next for Kapil Sharma's Show? Despite the viewership dip, The Great Indian Kapil Show still remains one of Netflix India's most talked-about titles. But the slipping presence in the global charts may push the platform and the creators to reassess how the show connects with a streaming-first audience.
