Senior citizen charged with posting offensive remarks against king

(Bernama pic) SEPANG : An elderly man was charged in the sessions court here today with posting offensive remarks against Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim on Facebook in February. However, the charge was not read out to the 61-year-old due to his health and hearing issues. Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman granted him permission to undergo a psychiatric assessment, and fixed the case for mention on Aug 15. Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission deputy public prosecutor Fadhli Wahab and prosecuting officer Azmir Razali appeared for the prosecution. The court had issued a warrant of arrest on June 20, after two no-shows by the man. The charge, framed under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, punishable under Section 233(3), provides for a fine not exceeding RM50,000, imprisonment of up to a year, or both, upon conviction.

SEPANG, July 4 — An elderly man was charged in the Sessions Court here today with posting offensive remarks against His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, on Facebook in February. However, the charges were not read out to the 61-year-old man due to his health and hearing issues. Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman granted the accused permission to undergo psychiatric assessment, with the case fixed for mention on August 15. Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) deputy public prosecutor Fadhli Ab Wahab and prosecuting officer Mohamad Azmir Mohd Razali appeared for the prosecution. A warrant of arrest was issued by the court on 20 June after the man failed to appear in court twice. (PDRM pic) PETALING JAYA : Police have recorded a statement from a male teacher who allegedly posted offensive remarks on social media related to the fatal Gerik crash involving 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on June 9. Manjung police chief Hasbullah Abd Rahman said the teacher came to the district police headquarters at 10am to provide his statement in a session that lasted about three hours. 'We will refer the case to the deputy public prosecutor after the investigation paper is completed,' Bernama reported him as saying when contacted today. The case is classified under Section 504 of the Penal Code, which deals with intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or network services. Previously, Hasbullah was reported as saying police received a report on June 11 regarding the post, made from a Facebook account under the name 'Khalid Yunus'.

IPOH, June 13 — Police have launched an investigation into a Facebook account that posted offensive remarks about the deaths of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in the recent road accident in Gerik. Manjung police chief ACP Hasbullah Abd Rahman said a report was received at about 4.40 pm yesterday. 'A Facebook account under the name 'Khalid Yunus' was found to have posted an offensive remark about the students,' he said in a statement today. He said the case was being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Earlier, the Perak Education Department had instructed a school to prepare a full report concerning one of its teachers, who allegedly posted the offensive remarks. — Bernama
