Marriage Diaries: My wife put a tracking app on my phone – it's making it hard to see my mistress
My wife is the CEO of our household – she takes care of finances, admin and security. I have a high-pressure job in the City, and I earn well. We have been together for 18 years and have two children in their mid-teens. It is fair to say we make a good team – I love her, she is an amazing mother, great company and hardworking and I think a lot of our friends look at us and think we are a strong couple.
Two years ago, I ran into an old friend – a woman I had worked with in my thirties (I am 48 now). We went for drinks together and the sexual tension was extraordinary. I had not thought her particularly attractive before, but suddenly I was drawn to her. She is also married, but we exchanged numbers and eventually arranged to meet up at a hotel. There are a vast number of hotels in London which offer day-rate rooms, and the process is simple and discreet. I chose a day to meet when my wife was out of town, to be absolutely sure I would not get caught.
The sex was amazing – I can't really do it justice in a description. The connection between us was intense and strong. I enjoy sex with my wife, but this was nothing like it. I think the word, although it sounds like a cliché, is 'electric'. There was no way this encounter could be a one-off and because we were both married and neither of us had any intention of leaving our spouses, starting a discreet affair seemed like the perfect arrangement. No one would get hurt and we would have wonderful times together. We met every month or so for nearly two years, until my wife recently threw a spanner in the works.
She announced that everyone in the family should install a friends and family tracker application. Our children are at the age where they have started to go out alone more. I agreed that a tracker app was a sensible idea. The problem I had was that this one had perfectly accurate location settings. One feature was to announce when you left and arrived at certain designated places, which for me would be work and home. Within a few days of using it, my wife asked me if I had enjoyed a pint after work – she had spotted me in the pub. She praised me for a lunchtime gym visit. She seemed very interested in my movements.
My mistress and I always meet at lunchtime near my office. We arrive and leave the hotel separately to minimise the risk of being caught. Sending an alert that I was leaving my office and then tracking me as I headed to a hotel in the City would look very dicey.
I decided the best thing to do is just leave my phone in the office while I go out for some 'afternoon delight'. This way it just looks like I am working through lunch. I then go to the hotel, without my phone, before returning to the office.
It's rather 'old school' – I prearrange a time and location, then my mistress texts me to say she is on her way. So far it is working – the only hitch will be if there are any problems on the Tube, as she doesn't work near me, and I'm left hanging in the hotel room. I thought about buying a burner phone but am worried my wife will find that too. How can I make my affair less logistically complicated?
