Protect children's health, keep activities indoors, Sarawak minister tells schools
KUCHING, July 29 — Schools in Sarawak have been advised to reduce outdoor activities to avoid the risk of students developing health issues related to the ongoing haze and hot weather conditions. State Women, Children and Community Wellbeing Minister (KPWK) Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said that if there is a need to conduct extracurricular activities involving students, they should be held indoors to avoid exposure to the unhealthy air quality. 'It is common practice during hazy conditions to avoid outdoor activities. The current air quality is not safe due to the haze,' she told reporters after the Petronas Empowering Knowledge 2025 Education Sponsorship Award ceremony today. She emphasised that co-curricular and sports programmes should preferably be conducted indoors, particularly to safeguard students who suffer from respiratory conditions such as asthma. She advised the public, especially schoolchildren, to resume the use of face masks as a preventive measure against the adverse effects of the haze. 'Children with asthma need special attention, and we strongly encourage them to wear face masks as a precaution,' she said. She added that schools have been instructed to continuously monitor the Air Pollution Index (API) readings and take appropriate action based on the latest data. Meanwhile, it is reported that air quality in Sarawak remained at moderate levels across all 18 monitoring stations this morning, according to the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB). As of 8 am, Lundu recorded the highest API reading at 88, up from 79 at 4 pm yesterday. Kuching maintained a reading of 74, unchanged from the same time the previous day. — Bernama

Sands Sports Park playing key role in improving quality of life in Riyadh
RIYADH: The capital's Sands Sports Park is one of the flagship components of the Sports Boulevard project, combining the natural beauty of the desert with a range of sporting facilities. Located southeast of King Khalid International Airport, the park is designed to enhance residents' quality of life, inspiring them to exercise and enjoy nature, the Saudi Press Agency reported recently. The facility opened earlier this year and is a significant addition to the Kingdom's growing network of sporting and entertainment offerings. The park stretches across a vast expanse of sand dunes and features more than 45 km of multi-use trails, making it the longest open-air project dedicated to outdoor activities in the Kingdom. Sands Sports Park was designed with local heritage in mind, and features sculptures of the Najdi rose at the convergence of several trails. Several specialized trails offer different activities including cycling, mountain biking, running, walking, hiking and horseback riding. In its construction, more than 350,000 sq. meters of sand dunes were rehabilitated with facilities integrated into the terrain to preserve the natural ecosystem, demonstrating dedication to sustainability and mindful urban development. The park is also equipped to host major cycling competitions and endurance races, reinforcing Saudi Arabia's presence on the global map of sports and eco-tourism, aligning with the rising international interest in outdoor and sustainable experiences. As a symbol of Riyadh's dynamic transformation, the park merges modern vision with cultural authenticity, aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, the SPA reported. By expanding access to safe, inclusive, and sustainable recreation, the park plays a key role in shaping a more vibrant, livable capital and encouraging a deeper connection between people and nature.

‘It was on its way out': Huntsville bridge collapses months before repairs would have started
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Construction crews were out and working on the Aldridge Creek Greenway Wednesday after a bridge collapsed along the trail Tuesday morning. The trestle bridge collapsed, dropping two rail cars into the creek below. Huntsville Madison County Railroad Authority (HMCR) said no one was injured and the train cars were not carrying any hazardous materials. 📲 to stay updated on the go. 📧 to have news sent to your inbox. The Aldridge Creek Greenway is a popular spot for people across the Tennessee Valley to enjoy various outdoor activities. Some runners, like Abraham Flores, said they were not aware of the trestle bridge collapse until they encountered roadblocks from construction crews along the trail Wednesday. 'I was just running on the trail. I parked at Challenger, running down it. And I noticed it was closed off, and I was really confused,' Flores said. 'I thought about going around it, but I was like, I think there's a reason.' That reason is that greenway space surrounding the bridge is closed to the public due to an ongoing federal investigation into the collapse, along with keeping trail users safe. Holly Weber grew up near the creek and said the bridge has been deteriorating for quite some time, saying the weather was a large factor in its structural integrity. Only on News 19: Family shares experience with daughter's rare genetic disorder 'I couldn't believe it finally came down. It looked like it was on its way out, but it kind of sucks to see it go,' Weber said. 'The wood was in bad shape. The creek floods a lot, so over the years, there was a lot of water damage to it.' Governor Ivey awarded the HMCR a $1 million grant in 2024, dedicated to repairing railroads, including the Aldridge Creek bridge. In a press release from The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, Ivey speaks of the railroad's industrial importance. 'The Huntsville and Madison County Railroad Authority has been an important short-line railroad that for years has dutifully served multiple industries. I am pleased to announce this funding for the upgrades that will help the rail system continue providing vital service for area industries for years to come.' Governor Kay Ivey Mark Lumb with the HMCR said those funds will be available in October, and repairs to the bridge and railroad could start around then. Although there is no start date or plan in place without the funding. Those repairs will now take several months and could cost more than the grant. The greenway area surrounding the bridge will be closed while the investigation continues, and will likely remain closed after its completion for repairs. It is unclear if industries that receive materials due to this train's operation will be impacted. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Must-Have Summer Essentials for Parents, as Recommended by the Mom of a 2-Year-Old
If you're an active parent who easily gets cabin fever, a jogging stroller is a great way to get out of the house with your toddler. The Guava Roam Stroller is a jogging stroller on the smaller side, and according to the website, it's 50% smaller than other jogging strollers. It folds up easily, so it works if you have limited space in your home. I've been using this stroller for part of the summer and love how it's made it easier for me to go out for a run while also bringing my toddler along with me. The Guava is sturdy and can hold a 6-month-old infant up to a 60-pound child. It has airless rubber bike tires that always run smoothly and can handle all terrains. I've pushed it through pavement, grass, even trails with rocky areas. You can adjust the handles based on your preferred height, which is a plus if caretakers of different heights will be using it. My alternative stroller is the UPPAbaby Vista V3, and it's noticeable how much smoother the Guava is in comparison, even when I load up the stroller with my toddler's diaper bag and other accessories. Storing it is even easier; all you have to do is lock the stroller, adjust the handle to the lowest setting and pull the handle under the seat to fold it in half.
