Josef Newgarden, Alex Palou Win Poles at Iowa

INDYCAR Josef Newgarden and Alex Palou will be the polesitters for this weekend's Sukup INDYCAR Race Weekend at Iowa Speedway. In qualifying, Team Penske driver Newgarden earned the top spot for today's Synk 275 powered by Sukup with a lap of 183.999 mph. Palou, the NTT INDYCAR SERIES points leader who drives for Chip Ganassi Racing, grabbed the No. 1 starting spot for Sunday's Farm to Finish 275 powered by Sukup with a session-best 184.014. Today's race (5 p.m. ET, FOX, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network) will be the 11th race of the season. Sunday's race will be at 1 p.m. on the same broadcast outlets. Coincidentally, Newgarden and Palou will each start fourth in the race where they aren't the polesitter. Qualifying was based on two-lap runs, with the first lap setting the table for Race 1 and the second lap determining where the driver will start in Race 2. Newgarden is a six-time series race winner at this short oval. Newgarden's pole was his first of the season and the 19th of his career. That ties him with Danny Sullivan for 16th place on the sport's all-time list. Palou earned his fourth pole of the season and the 10th of his career. He became the 42nd driver to score double-digit poles in INDYCAR. His other poles this season came at Barber Motorsports Park, on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course and last weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. He has a series-high six race wins and leads Andretti Global's Kyle Kirkwood by 113 points with a pole point earned here. Juncos Hollinger Racing's Conor Daly will join Newgarden on the front row for today's race; Felix Rosenqvist of Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb-Agajanian will be alongside Palou when the green flag drops Sunday. Scott McLaughlin and Will Power won last year's races at this .894-mile oval. McLaughlin will start at the tail end of both fields this weekend after crashing in Turn 1 on his first lap. He was not injured. recommended Item 1 of 2

Inside Line: Most Underrated Driver This Season?

INDYCAR Today's question: We're just past the halfway point of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES season, as there are seven races remaining on the 17-race schedule. Who is the most underrated driver in the series so far this season? Curt Cavin: I'm going to throw everyone for a loop and choose Kyle Kirkwood, and here's why: We have been so fascinated by Alex Palou's domination that we haven't considered that in any recent year we would be standing on chairs to applaud what Kirkwood has accomplished. He already has three race wins this season, which ties the most by any driver last year. The Andretti Global driver scored his third win of this season in the eighth race. Last year, it took 14 races for a driver to win three races, and Palou, the series champion, wasn't one of them. Two years ago, it took nine races for Palou to get his third of the year. In fact, other than Palou this year, no driver has won three races quicker since Scott Dixon won the first three of the 2020 season. Additionally, Kirkwood already has a short oval victory – last month at World Wide Technology Raceway -- making him one of the leading candidates to reach victory at least once this weekend in Iowa Speedway's doubleheader. Blame Palou for this overshadowing; Kirkwood has done his part to earn the spotlight. Eric Smith: Rinus VeeKay is the driver that comes to my mind. Dale Coyne Racing had no top-10 finishes all last season, but VeeKay, who was the 27th and final full-time driver signed for this year, has six this season, including three straight. He's 13th in the standings, 19 points shy of 10th, and has a top-10 finish on every discipline of track the series offers. He's my pick for an underrated driver. Arni Sribhen: Quite a few drivers, including some mentioned by my colleagues here, have had their moments in the spotlight this season, but Marcus Armstrong just consistently delivers strong results for Meyer Shank Racing w/ Curb-Agajanian. In just his third NTT INDYCAR SERIES season, the 2023 NTT INDYCAR SERIES Rookie of the Year sits a career-best eighth in the point standings. And while he has yet to finish better than fifth this season, Armstrong has scored top-10 finishes five times in the last six races. His only blemish since May is an 18th-place finish at the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, but even there, he overcame a crash in pre-qualifying practice to have a solid points day. There's a reason Chip Ganassi Racing signed the speedy Kiwi to a multiyear deal and kept him in the family through its technical partnership with Meyer Shank Racing. Armstrong is just a breakthrough result away from being considered a regular contender and leaving this conversation. Paul Kelly: Kyffin Simpson. Look, it's no secret that Simpson brought and continues to bring significant funding to Chip Ganassi Racing since he joined the team for his NTT INDYCAR SERIES debut in 2024. And Kyff Dawg didn't exactly smash the competition in INDY NXT by Firestone, where he produced no wins, one pole and two podium finishes over two seasons. His best finish last season as a rookie in the top series was 12th. But Cayman Islands resident Simpson has evolved into more than just a ride-buyer this season, as his progress is one of the best under-the-radar stories of 2025. He has four top-10 finishes this season, including three in his last four starts. He earned his first Firestone Fast Six appearance last weekend at Mid-Ohio, qualifying third. He was running third in the race on legitimate pace before being assessed a drive-through penalty for clipping the foot of Dale Coyne Racing crew member Nico Don while exiting a pit stop. In fact, after the race, winner Scott Dixon said he was surprised Simpson didn't round out a 1-2-3 finish for CGR. Here's the most telling stat about Simpson's improvement: He finished a fairly anonymous 21st in points last season. This year, he's up to 15th, ahead of Indianapolis 500 winners Marcus Ericsson and Josef Newgarden among full-timers in the series. recommended Item 1 of 2

Gearing Up: Time for Team Penske To Step Up at Iowa Playground

INDYCAR It's Team Penske time, or so it would seem. Iowa Speedway is the next venue on tap for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, and this weekend's short oval is where Roger Penske's organization has won eight of the past nine races, sweeping the doubleheaders each of the past two years with three different drivers. Scott McLaughlin and Will Power won last year's races; Josef Newgarden captured the two in 2023 as part of his five wins for Penske at Iowa since 2017. This track couldn't arrive on the schedule soon enough for Team Penske, which is riding its longest winless drought since the one Ryan Briscoe ended at Milwaukee in 2008. The team and the aforementioned drivers have not been to victory lane this season and have gone 11 races since McLaughlin won the second race of last year's September visit to The Milwaukee Mile. Team Penske failed to win in the last 10 races of the 2007 season and the first five of 2008 to produce a 15-race drought. This year's troubles run deep, too. Power is the highest-ranked Team Penske driver in the standings in ninth place. McLaughlin is 11th, Newgarden is 19th. Their seasons can be summed up by Sunday's The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio presented by the All-New 2026 Passport when they finished 23rd (McLaughlin), 26th (Power) and 27th (Newgarden) in the 27-car field. For the first time in Newgarden's career dating to 2012, his car has been involved in an accident in three consecutive races. The most recent occurred Sunday just past the starting line when the rear brakes locked on his No. 2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet, leading to a spin that collected Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing's Graham Rahal. Both cars ended up in the gravel pit at Turn 4. Minutes later, Power's No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet was on pit road with a mechanical issue that led to his exit after just 11 laps. McLaughlin also failed to complete all 90 laps. Newgarden was leading last month's Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline at World Wide Technology Raceway and was about to lap NTT INDYCAR SERIES points leader Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing when the car of RLL rookie Louis Foster spun in front of him, collecting Newgarden. The impact was one of the fiercest of Newgarden's career. He also spun into a barrier last month in the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America. The NTT INDYCAR SERIES has staged 21 races at Iowa Speedway since 2007, but only four drivers in this field have gone to victory lane: Newgarden (six times, including once in 2016 with CFH Racing), Arrow McLaren's Pato O'Ward (2022), McLaughlin and Power. If ever Team Penske was going to get back to its winning ways, it feels like now. In last year's second race, Palou had the best short-oval performance of his career, finishing second to Power. He crashed out of the weekend's first race with an uncharacteristic spin on the front straightaway. He enters this race, the 11th of the season, with a 113-point lead over Andretti Global's Kyle Kirkwood, the winner of the only short-oval race held so far this season (at WWTR). The first practice of the Sukup INDYCAR Race Weekend is set for Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET (FS2, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network). The lineups for both races will be set in qualifying Saturday at noon (FS1). The Synk 275 powered by Sukup is at 5 p.m. ET Saturday, the Farm to Finish 275 powered by Sukup is at 1 p.m. Sunday. Both races will air live on FOX, the FOX Sports app and the INDYCAR Radio Network. recommended
