Search underway for missing woman last seen on ferry from N.S. to N.L.

An air and water search is underway for a woman who is believed to have fallen overboard from the MV Blue Puttees ferry as it travelled from North Sydney, N.S., to Port aux Basques, N.L., early Wednesday morning. RCMP say a 41-year-old woman was seen on surveillance footage at 3:26 a.m. NDT on July 16, and has since been reported missing. "As we are not sure of her current location, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and Coast Guard have been engaged to support a search by water," an RCMP spokesperson wrote in an email. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax confirmed to CBC News the woman is suspected to have fallen overboard. "The RCMP have searched the vessel extensively upon arrival in Port aux Basques, N.L., and did not locate the individual," Lt.-Cmdr. Len Hickey, a spokesperson for the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax, said in an email. Hickey said a Hercules aircraft, a Cormorant helicopter and a Provincial Airlines aircraft were deployed Wednesday to search the water south of Port aux Basques. Weather making search 'increasingly difficult' As of Thursday, Hickey said one Hercules aircraft remains on scene, as well as CCGS La Poile Bay. Another coast guard ship, the Cape Roger, will retrace the ferry's route between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. "Weather is becoming a concern," Hickey wrote. "Although the sea state remains calm at one meter, visibility is quickly decreasing and the ceiling continues to drop, making the search increasingly difficult." A spokesperson for Marine Atlantic, which operates the MV Blue Puttees ferry, declined comment.

Police reveal exactly how little girl fell from Disney Dream cruise ship before her heroic father saved her

The Florida Sheriff's Office has revealed just how a young girl managed to fall from a Disney cruise ship and into the ocean during a family vacation. The officials have stated that during the June 29 incident, the five-year-old had been sitting on a railing when she lost her balance and fell into the ocean from the fourth deck of the ship. According to their investigation, the father didn't see the incident that Sunday at all, and only learned that his daughter had fallen after his wife alerted him to the situation. The report debunks online speculation that she'd been placed on the railing by her dad so that he could take photos of her. Once notified that his daughter had gone overboard, the heroic dad jumped into the swift ocean water, saving her from certain death. People were horrified to hear that a little girl had gone overboard on Disney's $900 million luxury cruise ship as it sailed between the Bahamas and Fort Lauderdale. Clearing up the vicious accusations about the father's alleged negligence, the Broward Sheriff's Office said that the girl had lost her balance and fallen 'backwards through a porthole' all on her own. 'After the girl's mother alerted her husband, who didn't see the incident, he jumped into the ocean to save his daughter,' the Sheriff's Office said. Onlookers said they heard the mother screaming in terror and saying 'she's five and can't swim,' and alerting her husband. Fellow passenger Monica Shannon told the Daily Mail that, 'the parents were playing shuffleboard and the girl was climbing on the railings... and as she went to climb up again she flew off.' She said that it was a very windy day and the small child could have easily been blown from the ship with a large gust of wind. Detectives said the 37-year-old quickly dove overboard, found his daughter, and tread water for 20 minutes as hundreds of passengers watched. Both the father and the daughter were successfully rescued and brought back on board. The captain later made an announcement to inform passengers of the incident. Disney Cruise Lines commended the rescue team for their bravery and hard work: 'The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water. We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes. 'We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.' Daily Mail reached out to the Broward Sheriff's Office for comment.

5-Year-Old Girl Who Fell from Disney Cruise Ship Was Not Placed on Railing by Dad, Sheriff Says

The 5-year-old girl who fell overboard on a Disney Cruise ship was not placed on a balcony railing by her dad, authorities tell PEOPLE The Broward County Sheriff's Office is investigating the circumstances leading up to the fall Both the father and daughter were rescued and safely returned to the ship on June 29The father who saved his 5-year-old daughter after she fell overboard on a Disney Cruise did not place his child on the railing, as online rumors previously speculated. On Sunday, June 29, the Disney Dream cruise ship was returning to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. from a four-night cruise in the Bahamas when the little girl fell overboard from the ship's fourth deck. Her father jumped in after her and both were subsequently pulled from the water and returned to the boat by a Disney rescue team. The Broward Sheriff's Office confirmed to PEOPLE on Wednesday morning that the little girl was not being held by her father on the railing at the time of the fall. They acknowledged to CBS News that the information was "erroneously reported on some social media sites." On Wednesday evening, PIO Veda Coleman-Wright shared additional details from the ongoing investigation, including that the girl "lost her balance while sitting on a railing and [fell] backward through a porthole." She added, "After the girl's mother alerted her husband, who didn't see the incident, he jumped into the ocean to save his daughter." The father, 37, who has not been named, was transported to an area hospital after the ship docked in Port Everglades, Fla. Monday morning and treated for an unspecified injury. The Sheriff's Office applauded the rescue efforts. In a statement to PEOPLE on Tuesday night, a representative wrote, 'The Disney crew was well prepared. Clearly, their training and readiness paid off because they executed a successful ocean rescue.''While there doesn't appear to be anything suspicious, Broward Sheriff's Office detectives are investigating the circumstances that led up to the child falling overboard,' the statement continued. A passenger onboard the ship named Chandler, who asked to be identified only by her first name, recalled the events for PEOPLE. 'There was some kind of commotion,' the passenger said. 'Then this awful scream from what I assume is the mother and then this massive splash.' Chandler noted the events occurred while traveling between Nassau and Grand Bahama Island: 'It sounded like hitting pavement, nothing like if you jump into a pool, it was so loud.'She and her family went to the balcony to get a better look and 15 seconds later, what appeared to be a life vest was dropped into the water. Over the loudspeaker the family heard someone call 'MOB [Man overboard] port side,' and three more flotation devices were thrown in. Within minutes, a crew of four dropped off the ship and into a rescue boat. Chandler's TikTok footage shows rescue workers reaching the father and daughter, pulling them out of the water and safely bringing them back to the ship. Chandler claimed that the incident began at 11:15 a.m. and the duo was pulled up at 11:47 a.m. local time. 'I didn't think they'd find them,' she candidly told PEOPLE. 'I had to tell my own 9-year-old daughter Harper they were probably gone [because] they usually can't find people who fall.' What happens when a passenger falls overboard on a cruise ship?

When some ships stand 70m above the waterline, you wouldn't want to imagine falling off one. Yet on rare occasions, people do. If you're ever enjoying a nightcap or stroll on deck after dinner and hear a Code Oscar — 'Oscar, Oscar, Oscar' — then keep calm. It's a broadcast from the bridge over the ship's public address system, alerting the crew that someone has gone overboard. The situation is frightening for other passengers and crew, alarming for the cruise line and also expensive. It might not be a case of merely chucking a lifebuoy either — complex search and rescue operations can involve coastguards, nearby ships and drones or June 2025, a young girl fell overboard from the fourth deck of the Disney Dream cruise ship, which was off the port of Fort Lauderdale. The child's father jumped in after her and both were quickly rescued by the crew. Earlier in 2025, Kimberly Burch, the fiancée of Taime Downe, lead singer of American rock band Faster Pussycat, went overboard and is presumed dead — her body has not been recovered. The group were on deck to perform on an Eighties-themed Royal Caribbean cruise. One passenger who went overboard in June 2023 survived a fall from the tenth deck of Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas, off the coast of the Dominican Republic. The 42-year-old woman recovered and was in good health, the coastguard said following the incident. Provided you behave sensibly on a ship, it's unlikely that you're going to topple off it. Keep an eye on your children and know where they are. Follow the crew's instructions in rough weather. And however much hospitality you've enjoyed on board, stay off those railings. I've been on board when a Code Oscar has been announced. Several years ago, I was on a Carnival ship, some distance out of Mykonos. The call went out. While the crew are thoroughly trained in dealing with 'man overboard' emergencies and leapt into action, it was a different story among the passengers for the simple reason that you don't know who has fallen off the ship. School holidays were in full swing and there were hundreds of children and teenagers on board, many of whom were in the kids' club, or otherwise away from their parents. Ashen-faced mums and dads were racing all over the ship, trying to find their offspring. The drama unfolded as the captain slowed right down and started circling the area where the sighting of the 'person' had been reported. Rescue boats were lowered, spotlights focused on the water, and the coastguard summoned. I was in the dining room with my kids at the time and everybody rushed to one side of the room to watch. It turned out that the alarm was a false one. Some passengers, after a liquid lunch, had spotted an air bed floating in the water and had taken it for a person and raised the alarm, the captain later told me through gritted teeth. However spurious the apparent sighting of a person overboard, every alarm has to be taken with the utmost seriousness. The crew will always operate to the same protocols; stop the ship, turn around to the spot where the incident happened, inform the coastguard and put down rescue boats. The idea of falling off a cruise ship is a chilling one but is also extremely rare. According to trade body Cruise Lines International Association (Clia), between 2009 and 2019, 212 people, representing just 0.00004 per cent of passengers and crew, went overboard. It's near-impossible to fall off a ship by accident. People who fall off ships are likely either drunk, high, suicidal, or are pushed. In the Clia report, every case that had been investigated was the result of 'an intentional or reckless act'. That's not to say it couldn't happen — but really, worrying about falling off the ship shouldn't even feature on your list of potential disaster-at-sea scenarios. 'Railings are designed to prevent people from going overboard,' says a spokesperson for Clia. 'Cruise ships have safety barriers in all public areas that are regulated by the US Coast Guard. By law, railings must be 42 inches tall. This height governs the railing of ships sailing not only in the US but elsewhere in the world.' Every balcony has either several railings or a plexiglass or steel panel so that no person can accidentally slide underneath. Cabins with a private balcony have locks high up on the doors, out of the reach of young children, so if you do leave your kids alone in the cabin for a while (which is not advised), they shouldn't be able to open the door. Ships carrying more than 250 passengers sailing in and out of US ports are also governed by the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act, which requires them to have video monitoring — meaning any unsafe behaviour or person overboard can quickly be spotted. In the event of rough weather that is potentially dangerous, the captain will close the outside decks to avoid anybody being flung around. Ships are built to the highest possible safety standards — and many use cutting-edge technology, too. For example, Ambassador Cruise Line has installed Zelim's intelligent man overboard detection system, ZOE, onboard Ambition. The system uses infrared and daylight cameras, sensors and software to detect and track anyone entering the water unexpectedly. Passengers have a responsibility for their own safety, too. You're told very clearly at the mandatory safety briefing never to climb on the railings. In more than 20 years of writing about cruising, I've only seen one person sitting on the railing, an influencer posing for Instagram. Good luck with that. • What should you do if you lose your passport?• Travel insurance guide: everything you need to know• How safe is a cruise ship in a storm? Authorities investigating after father jumps off Disney cruise ship to save daughter who fell overboard

A Disney Cruise Line vacation descended into chaos on Sunday after a child fell overboard, prompting her father to jump in after her. According to Disney officials, both individuals were rescued "within minutes" and reported no injuries. Here's how the incident unfolded. The incident happened aboard the Disney Dream as it sailed between the Bahamas and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It took place on the last day of the cruise. We don't know yet. But what we do know is that the 5-year-old girl fell overboard from the ship's fourth deck, which has a jogging track surrounded by railings and plexiglas. After she fell overboard, witnesses say her father jumped in after her and trod water for more than 10 minutes. This prompted a man overboard alert of "Mr MOB … port side" to be broadcast on the ship. One passenger, Laura Amador, described how she witnessed the two enter the ocean and nearly disappear into the horizon. "The ship was moving quickly, so quickly, it's crazy how quickly the people became tiny dots in the sea, and then you lost sight of them," Ms Amador told CBS News. "The captain slowed the ship and turned it around, and then they deployed a tender ship with people on it to go get them, and we saw them rescue the dad and daughter." Speaking with NBC News, James Tackett said he felt the ship make a really sharp turn. "When they did officially get the people, everyone cheered. It was a good moment." According to a statement from the Broward County Sheriff's Office, there "doesn't appear to be anything suspicious" about the incident. However, investigations are ongoing. "This family is so blessed," the statement read. "It's great to be able to respond to good news rather than what could have been a tragic outcome." The statement also praised the Disney crew, noting they "executed a successful ocean rescue". The identities of the father and daughter have not been publicly released. Social media posts from cruisers praised the rapid reaction from crew members and the overboard detection system that triggered an alert broadcast over the ship's loudspeakers. In a Facebook post on the Disney Dream Cruise Ship Group, one passenger, Kevin Furuta, said: "A girl fell overboard from the 4th deck & her dad went in after her…Thankfully the DCL rescue team was on it immediately and both were saved!" Disney confirmed in a statement that two passengers were rescued, but offered little detail about what occurred. "We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes," a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson said. The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 requires cruise lines to have man-overboard detection technology. According to 2019 data from the Cruise Lines International Association, 25 people fell overboard that year from cruise ships. Only nine were saved from the water.
