I Spent a Week in Europe With Just a Carry-on—and This $20 Flight Attendant-approved Hack Made It Possible

As someone who typically prefers to travel with just a carry-on bag, I've tried pretty much every packing hack to fit as much as possible into my suitcase. A glance inside will uncover shirts wound around hair tools, socks stuffed into shoes, and dresses tightly rolled into every crevice. I've become so confident in my ability to stuff a suitcase that I've typically been skeptical of packing cubes—that is, until my last Europe trip. You see, when I was recently packing for a near-week-long London trip, my usual methods weren't cutting it. Despite planning out my outfits for every day and night of the trip, my carry-on suitcase was overflowing. I decided to try packing with the Gonex Compression Packing Cubes, which are flight attendant-approved and on sale, and much to my delight, everything that I'd laid out to pack now fit in my carry-on. Apart from their space-saving magic, I'm impressed by how easy Gonex packing cubes are to use. They open from the top, allowing you to stuff in as many clothes as possible (which, trust me, I did), and close it like a pouch. Then, you simply push down on the cubes and use an extra zipper to manually compress them. All together, it's extremely satisfying to witness in action. I have the pink packing cubes, but this four-piece set comes in 19 styles total, including more neutral colors and a fun floral pattern that I'm tempted to order myself. They're sold in three sets depending on your packing needs: A four-piece packing cubes set, a five-piece set, and a six-piece set that includes four packing cubes, a toiletry bag, and a shoe bag. I opted for the four-piece set that includes one 17.3-inch by 13-inch extra-large pouch, plus the large, medium, and small packing cubes. The brand recommends that you pack larger items like jeans and sweaters into the larger cubes, while the smaller sizes can be used for socks and underwear. All four cubes are designed to fit together into your carry-on like a puzzle. However, my personal favorite way to use them is to start with the extra-large cube and work my way down if I feel I need more space. I've found that the largest cube fits perfectly into one side of my go-to Away Bigger Carry-on. The Gonex packing cubes have close to 1,500 five-star ratings at Amazon, with reviewers praising their high quality and durability. They're made with waterproof, lightweight nylon to alleviate some of your common travel conundrums: if liquid leaks into your bag, you don't have to worry about it getting on your clothes, and the cubes won't make your suitcase heavier. Each pouch also has a durable handle to make it easier to pull in and out of your suitcase. I was also excited to discover that my clothes didn't wrinkle any more than usual inside the packing cubes, since they are packed so tightly together. I recently put the packing cubes to the test once again—here's what my suitcase looked like before using them: Travel + Leisure / Rebecca Shinners But, once I packed everything into the Gonex packing cubes, I was left with more empty space. This ended up being the perfect spot to tuck my shoes so I wouldn't have to worry about them getting dirt on my clothes. And just imagine how much more I was able to fit into my suitcase once I convinced my puppy to move. Travel + Leisure / Rebecca Shinners I was so impressed with the packing cubes that I raved about them to my family and friends, and my brother already ordered them in blue for his next trip. Amazon reviewers have called them everything from their 'favorite packing necessity' to 'rockstars," and many of their fans are flight attendants. One wrote, "They are great space savers and make it possible for me to pack for a four-day trip to frigid destinations without having to bring an extra bag." Chiming in, a second flight attendant shared, "I routinely pack for a week in the medium bag only. If I used all four bags, I could pack enough to last months." Another reviewer said the cubes were 'worth every penny' after using them to pack everything they needed for two weeks in Europe in a carry-on bag, and a traveler added, 'The compression feature allowed me to overpack and still get everything neatly tucked into my suitcase." They made sure to note that the zippers still worked smoothly, no matter how much they overstuffed the pouches. It's safe to say that I'm no longer a packing cube skeptic. After my London trip, I'm now more confident than ever in my ability to pack just a carry-on for my upcoming trips. I even just booked an economy ticket to Paris to avoid checked bag fees. Whether you're looking to skip checking a bag like me or just want to fit more into your suitcase, you won't regret ordering the Gonex Compression Packing Cubes for your next trip. Read on for more carry-on packing essentials from Amazon. At the time of publishing, the price started at $20. Love a great deal? Best packing cubes for 2025 UK

It's a pain not being able to find what you need from your case when you're on holiday. The best packing cubes remove the need to fling everything out onto the bed. 2 They keep clothes separate so you know what's what, and more importantly, what's where. Available in a range of sizes, they can be purchased individually or as sets, which is often the most economical way to buy them. The tiny ones are great for jewellery, while the larger ones are suitable for dresses, jeans, shirts, jackets and more. Use them to keep shoes away from clothing, or pack in entire outfits so you don't need to even think about what to wear while you're away. They also come as compression cubes. You fill these as normal, but there's an extra zip that squashes everything down, so you can fit more in your case. Brilliant! I'm definitely a fan. My suitcase just looks so civilised when I open it and everything is fitted perfectly inside; it would make anyone think I was organised. Read on for my thoughts on the best packing cubes available for summer 2025. How I tested the best packing cubes When testing the packing cubes I looked at a number of factors. I wanted to know how much I could fit into each one, whether there's different sizes available to suit a variety of garments, how well-made they are and how secure the fastening. Design and colour are also important as they have to look good as well as being functional. And if you can have packing cubes that match the colour of your case why wouldn't you? Or is that just me. I also considered special features and price. Some versions are more expensive than others but there are options available to suit all budgets. IT Luggage Packing Cube Set IT Luggage Packing Cube Set, £20 from It Luggage Cons: None Rating: 9/10 Luggage expert IT knows a thing or two about packing, and it shows. Its packing cubes can be packed as they are, or compressed after filling to save space in your suitcase. The set contains three cubes — each a different size — in Pearled Ivory (cream and grey). They're made from polyester and have mesh fronts so you can see what's inside at a glance. The zips seem strong and fasten smoothly, and there's a grab handle on each cube so they're easy to carry and hang in the wardrobe or bathroom. At £20 for three, you can't go wrong. Kathmandu Anti-Odour Cells 2 BUY HERE Pros: Anti-odour fabric, made from recycled bottles, good range of sizes and shapes, strong zips Cons: You have to buy each product separately, so can work out expensive Rating: 9/10 Outdoor specialists Kathmandu are serious about travel and its packing cubes incorporate several useful features. I received the Expander Small – Medium Cell, Large Cell and the Footwear Cell. The Expander has a second zip, which when opened doubles the depth of the packing cube, while the Large is big enough for trousers, jeans and jumpers. The footwear cell has a thicker, reinforced base that will hold your shoes and trainers securely and a grab handle so you can hang it up. It depends on the size of your feet, of course, but it's easily big enough for two pairs of my shoes. All three are made with odour-absorbing fabric – something I've not seen in other packing cubes – and they're made from recycled plastic bottles. The company has impressive environmental credentials. It's a B-Corp, has a responsible down and wool standard certification, and is a member of the Better Cotton initiative. Material: 100% polyester; Weight: 114g (footwear cell), 98g (large cell), 77g (expander cell); Size: L 33cm x D 13cm x W 26cm (footwear cell), L 38cm x D 12cm x W 33cm (large cell), L 26cm x D 10cm x W 16.5cm (expander cell); Colours: Black and surf blue Mountain Warehouse Travel Organiser Set of 3 Travel Organiser Set of 3, £22.99 £12.99 from Mountain Warehouse BUY HERE Rating: 8.5/10 These packing cubes are currently on offer for £12.99, almost half the regular price of £22.99. They're made from polyester, which has a canvas-like feel. The fronts are mesh, so you can easily see what's inside, and the zips seem pretty robust. I also like that the zip pulls thread through each other for extra security. The two larger cubes are ideal for t-shirts, shirts and trousers or jeans, and the smaller cube is a handy size for underwear and socks. If you're new to packing cubes and don't want to spend too much trying them out, then these are a safe bet. They're a really good price at the moment and look like they will last a while. Katie Loxton Travel Packing Organisers Katie Loxton Travel Packing Organisers, £39.99 from Katie Loxton Cons: Expensive Rating: 8.5/10 These travel cubes from Katie Loxton feel substantial and look great. They come in black, featuring gold zip pulls and a gold logo on the front of each cube. Made from polyester, the fabric is thick, and the fronts are made from a fine mesh. The zips themselves run the smoothest of all the packing cubes I tested. The smallest size is ideal for make-up and toiletries because it looks so good. The medium size is large enough for underwear and socks, while t-shirts, shorts and other lightweight garments will fit into the large. None of the cubes are massive, though, so these may not suit you if you're looking to pack jeans or jumpers. These would make a lovely gift for a frequent traveller, as you can have the largest cube embroidered with the recipient's initials. Personalisation costs an extra £5, and there's a range of embroidery colours to choose from. Away The Insider Packing Cubes The Insider Packing Cubes, £35 from Away BUY HERE Cons: Expensive Rating: 8/10 I'm a big fan of Away suitcases, so I was excited to get my hands on its packing cubes. I received the green colourway, but they're available in lots of other shades, so you can match them to your luggage. There are four sizes in the pack, so they're suitable for a range of clothes; however, the largest size isn't that large. It's fine for t-shirts and light trousers, but I struggled to fit in heavier items like jeans. On the plus side, these look like they'll last a while. The zip pulls are chunky, and the zips themselves move freely without sticking. They're a little expensive, but they're well-made, and if you're an Away fan, they'll certainly appeal to you. Material: Nylon; Weight: 230g; Size: 25.5cm x 10.5cm x 21cm (small wide), 25.5cm x 10.5cm x 11cm (medium slim), 3 cm x 10.5cm x25.5 cm (medium wide), 33cm x 10.5cm x 17.5cm (large slim); Colours: 11, including sea green, coast blue, jet black and sorbet orange Cipway Compression Cubes Cipway Compression Cubes, £21.99 £18.69 from Amazon BUY HERE Pros: Full cover for more protection, each has a carry handle, very lightweight, good price Cons: The large one isn't very large, and the smaller cube isn't very small Rating: 7/10 These are compression cubes, which means they pack thinner than standard cubes. There's a second zip that you close after filling them with clothes, and this then squashes the cube down, removing some of the air. The effect is a little like that of vacuum bags but without the extreme suction effect. It means you have more space in your case and can pack more in for your trip. I like how lightweight these are, and the zips are pretty smooth, though you have to be careful they don't get caught when compressing. The front of the cubes is made from fabric, rather than mesh, which prevents dirt from, say, shoes, getting onto your clothes. It's a shame there's no smaller cube, though. Geediar Packing Cubes BUY HERE Pros: Large range of sizes, all of the cubes except the smallest have luggage straps inside, good range of colours Cons: Flimsy zips, heavy as a set, smell a little plasticky, not just packing cubes Rating: 6/10 When these are all together, they are rather heavy, and you have to think about weight limits when packing a case. They might suit a couple or family, as you could split them up. There's a great range of sizes, and all except the small have packing straps to keep your clothes in place. However, the set includes extras you won't necessarily need — a toothbrush holder, wash bag, drawstring bag, shoe bag and a zipped pouch. The zip fasteners look flimsy, and I'm not convinced about their longevity. For the price, though, they're a good way to try packing cubes without spending a fortune. OHS Travel Packing Cube And Bags Set Travel Packing Cube And Bags Set 10 Piece, £22 £7 from OHS BUY HERE Cons: Thin fabric, zips don't look that strong, not just packing cubes Rating: 5/10 You're not going to find cheaper than these packing cubes from the Online Home Shop. If you've never tried packing cubes before and want to see what they're like without spending a lot, then these could be the ones for you. There are 10 pieces in the set, but only four of them are packing cubes. The rest are bags – six of them. One would work for toiletries, but the rest are a waste, at least for me, as I won't use them. All of them are very thin, so I'm not convinced how long they will last. The zips don't look that strong, and the pulls are small. Each packing cube has a grab handle, though, so that's handy.

We Did the Digging: These Are the 10 Best New Travel Items to Hit Amazon This Month—From $6

Amazon is known for having major deals on travel essentials, but the online retailer also drops new, genius items daily. Whether you're traveling solo or going on a family vacation, you can find everything you need for your trips in its fresh selection of travel gear Amazon has a huge batch of new products that are already climbing its Hot New Releases chart, including compression packing cubes, crossbody bags, and more. To help you stock up on the most important gear, we put together a list of the 10 must-haves that are actually worth bringing on vacation. Keep reading to shop the best picks for as little as $6. Solo travelers can have peace of mind with the help of this handy hidden camera detector. Simply turn on the device, then sweep your hotel room or Airbnb, and if there are any hidden cameras in the space, an alarm will sound and the LED signal will light up. One traveler said it's about the size of a smartphone and can easily fit inside a jacket pocket. Featuring a paisley pattern and pretty tassel zipper, this toiletry bag will carry your skincare and makeup essentials in style. It has a smaller pocket inside to help organize your belongings, and even though it looks compact, shoppers confirm that the roomy pouch can hold a lot of stuff. Overpackers will appreciate how the compression technology of these packing cubes helps optimize suitcase space. The set comes with eight different-sized pieces, including a separate shoe bag to keep them separate from your clothes. Each bag is made from a waterproof material that'll help keep your clothes and accessories dry (even if your toiletries leak). If you're traveling internationally, you'll need a solid plug adapter, like this one from Epika, to make sure you keep your phone and earbuds juiced up. You can charge up to five devices at once (so you don't have to hunt for more than one outlet), and you can use it in several countries, including China, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. These carabiner clips can help protect your purse, suitcase, travel backpack, sling bag, and other double-zipper bags from pickpockets. They come in a set of 24 with two sizes to choose from. Just attach a carabiner to your bag's zippers, making it difficult to pull them apart. Whether you're going backpacking in another country or trekking up a local mountain, you need this packable hiking backpack. It's foldable and comes with a small phone pocket and water bottle pocket, so you don't have to take the backpack off every time you need to hydrate or check your texts. I personally don't own wired headphones, and not every airline offers free ones to watch in-flight entertainment. Thankfully, AirFly has this compact transmitter and receiver adapter that will connect to up to two wireless headphones. Plug it into a headphone jack and enjoy a movie on your long flight without worrying about tangled wires. These Bluetooth tags give Android users the ability to track checked bags, wallets, purses, and more. It comes in a four-pack and easily pairs with the Google 'Find My' app on your phone, so you can check the location of your bags with just a glance. This sling bag is compact in size, but has plenty of pockets for storing all of your in-flight and sightseeing essentials. It has three front pockets and a main compartment that's large enough to hold a 12-inch tablet, your phone, portable charger, wallet, airplane snacks, and more. Plus, the two side mesh pockets can hold your umbrella and water bottle, so you can stay hands-free. It's risky to pack your shoes and clothes without a layer of protection, especially if they're a pair of gym shoes. Rather than open your suitcase up to smelly clothes, use these travel shoe bags to make sure your sneakers or sandals are separated from your outfits, to help keep them clean. The bags are made with a waterproof material that's also transparent, which makes it easy to grab shoes without having to unzip each bag. Love a great deal? Best Packing Cubes for Every Kind of Trip (2025), Tested and Reviewed

Other Packing Cubes We Tried GoRuck Packing Cube for $25 (for 1, 10L flat): I loved the 15 x 10 x 3-inch size I tested of this rugged, 200-denier nylon cube with a mesh front. It fit almost anything I needed for any occasion, with a convenient carry handle and signature GoRuck American flag patch on the front. However, they are pricey, and unless you need them to match your GoRuck gear, there's nothing about them that stands out above comparably priced cubes. Amazon Basics for $16 (set of 4): This four-pack of cubes with sturdy-mesh windows and ripstop-like fabric was comparable in quality to brands four times the price. However, Bagsmart's cubes were the same price and even sturdier, so they just edged these out for the top budget slot. Away the Insider Packing Cubes for $45 (set of 4): I like that these come in 10 trendy colors, many of which match Away's luggage. However, after testing over 20 different brands and types at various price points, these cubes just didn't stand out. The material was very thin and was indistinguishable from those of some of the cheaper Amazon brands, and the zippers were small. Shacke Pak Packing Cubes for $25 (set of 6): These were pretty good quality for an Amazon brand; there's a sturdy handle and the material is slightly thicker than other packing cubes at this price point. I like the mix of mesh for breathability and opaque fabric for privacy. They come in nine colors, but the colors are clownishly bright and the four-paneled mesh design reminds me of a jock strap. Shacke says it uses YKK zippers on all its packing cubes, but I peeled back the cord covering the zipper and could not find a YKK insignia anywhere. Gorilla Grip Packing Cubes for $22 (set of 8): These were the least expensive packing cubes I tested, and unfortunately, it showed. The material was very thin, and the zippers were janky. I do like that they come with a shoe and laundry bag, however, and when not being used they fold down quite small. They come in a range of colors, with a nice mesh window while not being totally see-through. Hand wash only. Other Travel Accessories We Like Courtesy of Calpak Calpak Luka Zippered Passport Wallet for $35: Whether you're traveling internationally or just neglected to update your driver's license before the US Real ID deadline (guilty), a passport wallet is a must. This stylish, puffy number from Calpak holds not only your passport, but cash, cards, and even your phone in a pocket on the front. The only down side is that it is quite large, about the size of a contemporary paperback book, and it doesn't have a handle or loop, so it is awkward to carry if you don't have a purse large enough to accommodate it. Gorilla Grip Luggage Straps for $15 (set of 4): If you tend to travel with your hard-sided checked bag while it's expanded, you might have noticed the somewhat alarming lack of structure. Both hard sides contain their own strapped-down loads, flopping around while connected only by a thin fabric zipper. I rely on these straps to hold my precariously packed suitcase together when it's being launched off the scale onto the conveyor belt or thrown around on the tarmac. And as a bonus, the bright color (the company has nine to choose from) makes your bag easy to spot on the baggage claim carousel. Kusshi Travel Jewelry Organizer for $49 (medium): I don't know how I lived so long just throwing jewelry willy-nilly into a toiletry bag, but I don't advise this unless you want to spend your first night on vacation untangling necklaces. For the ultimate in space-saving organization, you can't top this hanging model that folds down to be perfectly flat. The medium size features three tiers of soft-lined, PVC-fronted zippered pockets for earrings rings, bracelets, watches, and whatever else you might need, plus a nifty necklace holder with loops and snaps. The large size has the same, but with twice as many sections. When closed, it folds up flat about the size of an iPad. Photograph: Kat Merck How I Tested I've been testing toiletry bags and adjacent accessories for the past seven months, using them daily in my bathroom and taking them on trips every few months. For the initial testing round for packing cubes, I inspected each cube or set of cubes for features and materials. I tested how smoothly the zippers zipped open and closed, and how easy it was to use any compression feature. I packed various cubes with bulky sweatshirts and sweatpants to see how many pieces I could fit in the largest cube. Then, at the end of the testing period, I packed a cube from each set in three suitcases and took them on a weeklong cross-country trip, assessing how easy they would be to pack or unpack, or if anything bothered me or my family amid the stress and unpredictability of travel. Why Not Just Use a Ziplock Bag? This is the question I see most from travelers suspicious of using packing cubes. Ziplock bags are inexpensive, and you can see everything inside. Why would one spend $25 or even $100 on a set of packing cubes when a box of 2.5-gallon bags costs $5? It's a valid question, and one I set out to investigate by packing a couple of slide-lock Hefty bags along with my packing cubes for a weeklong trip. I discovered few things. • Packing cubes are breathable. This is especially helpful on the way back home when most or all of your laundry is dirty. If your clothes smell like anything—anything at all—you will be hit in the face with that smell after they've been sitting in an airtight plastic bag. • Packing cubes are durable. Unlike a plastic bag, packing cubes won't rip, burst, or develop unexpected holes. • (Some) packing cubes are compressible. Can you fit five days' worth of pants and shirts in a plastic bag? Probably not. But you definitely can in a compressible packing cube, like some of the options above.

My Mom Has Traveled for 40+ Years With Just a Carry-on—These 8 Genius Packing Tips Let Her Fit 100 Items in Her Bag

My mom has traveled throughout the world for nearly 42 years and prides herself on never checking a bag. Whether she's traveling for work or taking a trip to New York City to visit me, she has nailed packing a carry-on down to a science and can fit 100 items into her compact luggage for a weeklong trip. With more than four decades of travel experience, she has mastered how to survive long travel days through her own trial and error as well as tips she picked up from colleagues. Now, she can easily identify the biggest packing mistakes most travelers make. She shared her personal packing hacks with Travel + Leisure , plus the must-have items that help her fit everything she needs for a weeklong trip into a carry-on (like her skincare routine, makeup, an extra pair of shoes, and a mini hair straightener). They can all be found at Amazon's travel store, starting at $6. A handy set of packing cubes, like this set of eight, will help you organize your suitcase by outfit or article of clothing (my mom prefers to do the latter). Plus, you won't have to dig around and ruin your precious folding just to find a shirt. Bonus tip: My mom recommends creating a capsule wardrobe, so you can mix and match a few core pieces into many outfits, which minimizes the amount of clothes you pack. For weeklong summer trips, she sticks to four bottoms, five tops, two dresses, a bathing suit, a sweater, a skirt, two pairs of pajamas, and a pair of underwear for each day. 'I can turn that into 20 different outfits,' she said. And if you want to bring any extra layers, she recommends wearing those on the plane. Vitamin bottles are bulky, and several will fill up your luggage fast. That's why my mom stopped packing separate containers and opted for a slim travel pill organizer. It's small enough to slip into a pocket of your carry-on and has eight slots for your medicine and supplements. If you want to organize it further, you can use the included labels. Having traveled with family and coworkers for decades, my mom has noticed that one area people always go wrong with packing is shoes. While it's nice to have options, shoes take up the most space, especially if they're bulky. She recommends wearing your sneakers or walking shoes on the plane, and packing a flat, versatile option that you can squeeze into the side of your suitcase. One of her favorite pairs is Chaco sandals because the shoes are flexible enough to pack, have arch support, and can easily be paired with shorts, summer dresses, and flowy pants. This is one of the most handy tips my mom has passed down to me. Unlike a steamer, Bounce's spray is tiny enough to go inside your toiletry bag, which saves so much room in your carry-on. It also quickly smooths out any travel clothes that aren't wrinkle-free, so you can avoid whipping out the hotel iron. All you have to do is spray the wrinkled area and smooth it out with your hands. Plus, the clean scent helps keep your clothes smelling fresh when there isn't a nearby laundry room. A hanging toiletry bag gives you the ability to see everything inside without having to dig around and lay everything out on the bathroom counter. This one is made with clear pockets and slots to put your bottles into. The built-in hanger can go over the bathroom door or on a hook, so everything is on display. Bonus tip: Avoid taking your entire beauty routine with you when you travel—you only need the absolute necessities. For skincare that includes a good cleanser and moisturizer, but if you want to cut down what you pack even more, my mom suggests bringing a tinted moisturizer with SPF. The only shower toiletry my mom packs is Ouai's multipurpose hair oil. It acts as a heat protectant, makes her hair 'smooth like silk,' and minimizes frizz, which is especially important in tropical climates. If you're wondering why shampoo and conditioner aren't on her list, it goes back to her secret to fitting more things into a carry-on. You must reduce the amount of bulky items you pack and use things the hotel provides you, which include hair care items and body wash. Most hotels have a blow dryer, which means you can skip packing your own and use that extra space for more important things, like a packable pair of shoes. For days when she wants to give her hair a soft wave or straighten it, my mom's go-to is a mini straightener. It's compact and acts as a three-in-one styler that she said 'can make my hair wavy, add a light curl, or just [smooth] some spots.' My mom has racked up more than 2,000 hotel stays, so she knows that having a lot of outlets is a luxury you don't have in all rooms. Instead of bringing more than one charging cord, my mom prefers a folding charging station because it gives her three chargers in one, packing-friendly device. It also keeps her phone, smartwatch, and wireless earbuds together, so she doesn't have to remember where everything's plugged in and risk forgetting to pack anything. Love a great deal?
