Most shocking court cases in 2025 including puppy thief and paedo Bromley teacher
At the halfway point of 2025 we're looking back at six of the most shocking court cases the News Shopper has covered this year. They include a paedophile Bromley teacher, a prison guard who had a relationship with an evil murderer and a puppy thief. Prison workshop officer Hayley Jones (right) admitted having an inappropriate relationship with killer Jordan McSweeney (left) (Image: Met Police/PA) A HMP Belmarsh prison officer accused of having sex with evil murderer Jordan McSweeney for 10 months was jailed. Hayley Jones, 34, was a prison workshop officer at the high security prison in Thamesmead when CCTV footage caught her kissing, touching and playing with McSweeney – who was serving a life sentence for the brutal sexual assault and murder of 35-year-old Zara Aleena in Ilford. Footage also showed the pair leaving rooms which had no CCTV whilst adjusting their clothes. In a letter which was intercepted by guards, McSweeney told another prisoner that he had been 'f***ing the fat thing from the workshop' for 10 months. He also claimed she had been providing him with contraband such as a phone, 'man was living good' McSweeney wrote. Jones admitted kissing and touching took place between her and McSweeney but denies having sex with him or providing him with contraband. She was jailed for nine months. Read the full story here. Paedophile drama teacher Shaun Baker (Image: Met Police) A Bromley drama teacher who raped and sexually abused a pupil from the age of 12 was jailed. Shaun Baker was head of drama at Ravens Wood School in Keston when he groomed a student, made him engage in sexual activity, and raped him multiple times. Baker, now 50, committed the offences in the 2000s but he continued to teach until his arrest in 2021. A jury found Baker guilty of 14 offences including three rapes following a two-week trial at Croydon Crown Court. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison. Read the full story here. British bulldog puppy Spot was stolen from his owner by Francis Zeta (Image: Met Police/Newsquest) A man who stole a puppy in Orpington while threatening the owner 'stop me and I'll do you' finally admitted the crime five years on. On March 3, 2020, a man in his 30s was walking his weeks-old British bulldog puppy Spot when he noticed two men watching him from a white Mercedes. The dog walker ran away when the men got out of the car, one of them wielding something shiny which looked like a knife, but the men caught up and threatened him before driving off with Spot. Spot was later found wandering a street in Harlow, Essex, on his own and was returned to his owner relatively unharmed, albeit traumatised. Francis Zeta, 38, of Muir Road in Hackney, was arrested two later after being identified as the owner of the Mercedes, but he told police a man who looked just like him had taken his car and committed this dognapping. But in April, Zeta finally pleaded guilty to the robbery - the second man has never been identified. Zeta avoided prison due to his ill health. Read the full story. Shammah Nicholas (pictured) armed himself with two kitchen knives before carrying out a frenzied attack on shopkeepers at Burnt Ash Food and Wine Two Bromley shopkeepers were stabbed in a frenzied attack by a man angered that he was being watched to make sure he didn't steal. Shammah Nicholas' behaviour was described as 'depraved' by his own barrister. The court heard that 22-year-old Nicholas entered Burnt Ash Food and Wine with his sister at around 3.30pm on September 11, 2023. He took exception to that fact that two shopkeepers – men aged 49 and 55 – were observing them to ensure they didn't steal. After a violent confrontation instigated by Nicholas, he left the shop then returned minutes later armed with two large knives. CCTV played in court showed a shirtless Nicholas re-entering the shop just minutes after he left. He chased the shopkeepers around the off-licence in a frenzy, stabbing each of them multiple times before leaving. One shopkeeper was stabbed in the shoulder and still had the knife lodged in him when police arrived. The other was stabbed once in the arm and multiple times in the abdomen area - he said he thought he was going to die as blood was pouring out of him. 'I've lived in England for nearly 40 years and never experienced anything like this,' he said. Read the full story here. Carol Cue, 75, stole £21,000 of jewellery from one of her closest friends, including a ring which had belonged to her friend's dead brother (Image: Met Police) An Eltham pensioner stole £21,000 worth of precious jewellery from one of her closest friends and pawned it to fund a holiday. Elaine Peat, from Welling, had been friends with Carol Cue for over 50 years and said she treated her 'like a sister'. Elaine said she felt 'numb' when she discovered that Cue had been stealing priceless keepsakes from her jewellery box including a ring which had belonged to her dead brother. Cue then revealed she had pawned many of the items and had spent the money whilst staying at Elaine's holiday home in France. Cue, 75, pleaded guilty to theft and narrowly avoided being sent to prison by a judge who described her actions as 'mean and despicable'. Read the full story here. Fatih Hassan (Image: Met Police) A thug was jailed for repeatedly stabbing a dad in front of his eight-month-old baby at the Chislehurst War Memorial. Mekseb Eyobraya had arranged to meet his ex-partner at the memorial at 3pm on June 8 last year to pick up the baby. But her new man, Fatih Hassan, also turned up carrying a knife which he used to stab Mekseb in the thigh and back. There was no animosity between any of the parties prior to this meeting and lawyers were at a loss to explain what provoked Hassan to carry out the near-fatal attack. Hassan, 31, of Avalon Road in Orpington, was jailed for 14 years.

Paedophile Gary Glitter told hospital worker his Asia holiday to abuse girls was 'the time of his life'
Paedophile Gary Glitter boasted that a holiday to Asia where he abused girls was 'the time of his life', a health worker has revealed. The woman in her 30s, who cared for the shamed singer while he was having a knee operation at a hospital in Dorset in 2022, said he showed no remorse. She also said the 80-year-old was really 'pervy' with the female staff who were caring for him while he was handcuffed to the bed. Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was first jailed in 1999 for possessing thousands of indecent images of children. He then was locked up again for 16 years in 2015 for sexually abusing three schoolgirls between 1975 and 1980. Glitter was also expelled from Cambodia in 2002 amid reports of sex crime allegations. Speaking about the time she spent with Glitter, the woman told The Mirror: 'He tried to make friends with the nurses, talking about being in Cambodia and what a wonderful place it was and how he spent the time of his life there. 'I felt sick when I found he had been accused of abusing children there.' 'You would of thought he would have felt guilty about it but he was saying it was the best time of his life. It was chilling,' she added. Four years after he was kicked Cambodia, Glitter was convicted of sexually abusing two girls, aged ten and 11, in Vietnam and spent two and a half years in jail. He escaped serious charges of child rape — which carried a death sentence — and returned to the UK in 2008. The offences for which he was jailed in 2015 came to light as part of Operation Yewtree - the Metropolitan Police investigation launched in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal. He was forced to sign the sex offenders' register, but he was arrested once again in 2012 at his multi-million-pound home in Westminster. Police would later describe him as a 'habitual sexual predator who took advantage of the star status afforded to him'. In 2015 he was convicted of attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and one of having sex with a girl under 13 in the 1970s and 1980s. The 80-year-old was automatically released from HMP The Verne - a low-security prison in Portland, Dorset - in February 2023 after serving half of his sentence. But just six weeks after walking free, he was dramatically taken back for breaching his licence conditions by allegedly viewing downloaded images of children. And he's remained inside since March 2023, having been refused bail in February 2024 when it was determined he remains a risk to children, who he had a 'sexual interest in'. Earlier this month it was revealed that Glitter will stay in jail for another two years after being told that his application to be released from prison had been rejected. Glitter's career grew at exponential rate in the early 1970s after releasing singles including Do You Wanna Touch Me, Rock and Roll, and I'm the Leader of the Gang. Rock and Roll was Glitter's breakout song, becoming one of the biggest hits of 1972, reaching number two in the UK charts and in the top ten in the US. He spent much of the next of the 12 months dominating the top ten, with singles I Didn't Know I Loved You (Till I Saw You Rock and Roll), Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah), and Hello Hello, I'm Back Again all charting, according to a biography. Glitter's first number one came as 'Glittermania' peaked in the Summer of 1973 with the release of I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am). He then hit number one again in the autumn with I Love You Love Me Love. By the time Glitter appeared on the charts again in 1984 with Another Rock and Roll Christmas and Dance Me Up, Glitter was playing more than 80 shows a year. Glitter no longer owns the master rights to his songs — meaning he no longer receives any royalties. In 2019, his song Rock and Roll Part 2 featured in hit movie The Joker, but rights holders insisted he would not receive any earnings.

Disneyland fake-wedding paedophile staged series of stunts involving girls
A convicted paedophile who faked a Disneyland wedding to a nine-year-old had previously staged a series of lavish stunts with young girls, a court has heard. Jaskarn Singh Jhaj posed as a producer to turn a National Trust property into a film set, hired the Odeon Leicester Square for a fake premiere and set up a dance school for eight to 14-year-old girls at which he turned up in a Bugatti supercar to greet them. On Friday, Isleworth Crown Court heard that 39-year-old Jhaj staged the events in order to meet young girls and underage teenagers in the hope of engaging in sexual activity with them. Earlier, this week it emerged that Jahj had travelled to France, where he was arrested by the French police after staging a fake wedding to a nine-year-old girl from Ukraine at Disneyland Paris on Saturday. French prosecutors said Jhaj faces several counts of fraud, abuse of trust, money laundering and identity theft after his arrest at the theme park in Marne-la-Vallee. The nine-year-old Ukrainian girl had arrived in France with her 41-year-old mother two days before the mock ceremony. Police were called by a 'guest' who later claimed he was hired for the wedding – which cost a total of £110,000 to stage – to play the father of the bride, only to realise 'at the last minute that she was nine years old'. 'He poses a risk of sexual harm to female children' The Metropolitan Police obtained a 10-year extension from the court to an existing Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) imposed on Jhaj in 2016 after he was convicted of sexual activity with two 15-year-old girls he had picked up after driving around Hounslow. Jhaj gave the girls a lift in his Range Rover, bought them meals, alcohol and gifts and pretended to be a famous film producer. He was sentenced to four years in prison and placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely. Following his release from Brixton Prison in October 2017, the Met applied for a SHPO against him. This week, the Met Commissioner went to court to obtain an extension to the order after evidence emerged that Jhaj had gone on to stage a series of stunts with the aim of attracting young girls. Benedict Scantlebury, prosecuting, told the court: 'The 2016 convictions for sexual activity with two females under the age of 16, and the seriousness of the underlying facts of those offences demonstrates that the Respondent [Jhaj] poses a risk of sexual harm to the public, namely to female children. '[Jhaj] has gone to great lengths and significant financial expense to engineer situations in which he is able to have contact with female children, including those under the age of 16. 'He has organised large-scale filming events in ways to avoid a breach of SHPO due to the presence of adult supervision, but which evince the efforts he is willing to go to in order to have contact with female children and which could readily escalate into grooming.' Fake film set and premiere Isleworth Crown Court heard that in August 2021, Jhaj had turned the National Trust's Waddesdon Manor, in Buckinghamshire, into a set where he was filmed firing a machine gun from the turret of one of several armoured vehicles. Cast and crew for the production grew so concerned over his behaviour towards a 16-year-old actress that they stopped filming and called police. In October 2023, Jhaj hired the Odeon Leicester Square to stage a fake premiere at which 100 children aged seven to 14 were told to act like fans, reaching out and touching him. The court heard that Jhaj – who changed his name by deed poll to London JA – had used other aliases to make these bookings 'such that the casting agencies were not aware he was a registered sex offender'. Other stunts followed, including a fake funeral at Brompton Cemetery and the London Oratory, using young female actors. In June last year, Jhaj, who also used prosthetics to alter his appearance, went on to hire a choreographer to attend a dance school in Tower Hamlets, where a group of girls aged eight to 14 were led outside as he pulled up in the Bugatti. Mr Scantlebury told the court: 'The respondent [Jhaj] interacted with the group of children and handed them gifts. The families were not aware that he was a registered sex offender.' Isleworth Crown Court was shown a number of films posted to social media by Jhaj in which he appeared with several young women, including schoolgirls. In one, posted on YouTube in May 2020, under the title 'Dangerous Sexual Predator, Jacky Jhaj of West London', he is seen sitting bare-chested in the front seat of a car with a number of girls in the back, including one wearing a school uniform. DC Andy Hawse, of Hounslow public protection unit, told the court: '[Jhaj] gets in with her. The film cuts before what is assumed to be some form of sexual activity.' In other footage, a group of young girls are filmed screaming and touching Jhaj as he supposedly leaves prison escorted by his security staff. Another video from 2020 shows a young woman lying on the back seat of a car, with her bare legs in the air. 'Absurd grandiose thinking' The court heard that it was unclear where Jhaj, from Feltham, west London, had obtained the funds to pay for these stunts. He registered multiple companies with Companies House, along with the names of fake directors, to arrange and pay for the events. His sister-in-law told police officers, who recently attended the family home looking for him, that she had not seen him for months. UK police officers have been in contact with French authorities following Jhaj's arrest across the Channel, where he had travelled in breach of his requirement to notify police of his movements. He has been remanded in custody by the French authorities for four months. Following a half day hearing, Judge Martin Edmunds KC, the recorder of Kensington and Chelsea, ruled that Jhaj 'is at risk of further sexual offending'. Granting an extension of the SHPO until November 2034 in his absence, Judge Edmunds stated: 'The stunts show absurd, grandiose thinking. They feed and illustrate his dangerous sexual preoccupation with young children, and also his defiance of controls. 'The total absence of any evidence showing that the defendant is seeking to address appropriately his preoccupation with children means a lengthy order is necessary.'
