Six Flags plans to close this 49-year-old California park in 2027. Is the Illinois one next?
Six Flags is likely to close its California's Great America park in Santa Clara, California, at the end of the 2027 season. The park's lease is coming to an end, and the company's chief financial officer, Brian Witherow, told investors in May that there were no current plans to extend the lease. 'Unless we decide to extend, and exercise one of our options to extend that lease, that park's last year without that extension would be after the '27 season,' he said during a question and answer session at the company's investor day this spring. The remarks were first reported by People. California's Great America was originally opened in 1976 by the Marriott Corporation and traded hands multiple times before coming under ownership by Cedar Fair in 2006. Cedar Fair and Six Flags merged in 2024. Cedar Fair had previously announced plans to close the park by 2033 after the operator sold the land to a logistics company, CBS News reported in 2022, but Six Flags decided to move up the closure date with the lease expiring. There are no plans to shutter the Six Flags Great America located in Gurnee, Illinois, about 40 miles north of Chicago. According to reports from NBC Chicago, even though the park has merged with Cedar Fair and plans to close another park in Maryland, the Illinois park is slated to stay open. The Six Flags in Gurnee originally opened in 1976 as Marriott's Great America before Six Flags took it over. Six Flags also announced in May that it would close Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor in Maryland at the end of this season. The final day of operation for both of these parks will be Nov. 2, 2025. Zach Wichter is a travel reporter and writes the Cruising Altitude column for USA TODAY. B.C. Parks closes part of Stawamus Chief Park due to 'food-conditioned' bear
B.C. Parks says sections of Stawamus Chief Park near Squamish will be closed until July 16 due to the presence of a "food-conditioned" bear. The park, a little more than 40 kilometres north of Vancouver, is an international destination for rock climbers. The closures largely affect certain bouldering areas at the base of the iconic 700-metre granite monolith. According to a statement from B.C. Parks, the closure is meant to "give the bear some space and a chance to move on," as well as ensure public safety. The agency did not respond to an interview request. Closures in the North Wall area of the park affect the bouldering areas from 0 to 1.4 kilometres on the Mamquam River Forest Service Road. Closures in the Grand Wall boulders include areas from Titanic South to the Apron Descent Trail. In both affected areas, the trails remain open, but B.C. Parks has asked visitors to use caution and not stop along the trail. The statement posted on the B.C. Parks website says visitors to all areas of the park must securely store all items that could attract bears, such as food, in a vehicle, hard-sided trailer or bear-proof locker. Failure to do so could result in eviction from the park and a violation ticket under the B.C. Wildlife Act. According to the local government, District of Squamish, the region is " prime bear habitat," with bears actively seeking food between March and December. In the summer months they feed on local berries, ants and grubs. The district, as well as the B.C. Conservation Officers Service, declined CBC News' interview requests to discuss both how the bear had been behaving leading up to the closure and how officials are tracking or managing it.

Wildfire risk remains high despite long weekend rain: Manitoba
A 'Park Closed' sign at the turn off to Falcon Lake on May 15, 2025. (Danton Unger/CTV News) The province is warning Manitobans that the risk remains high for several wildfires despite the rain and cooler weather over the long weekend. In a fire bulletin issued on Monday evening, the government said the Manitoba Wildfire Service is still responding to 13 active wildfires across the province, adding that fires in Nopiming and Whitehsell remain out of control. It says that a state of local emergency at Whiteshell and Nopiming provincial parks, as well as the associated park closures, remain in place. The government notes these closures are to ensure everyone's safety and to allow fire crews to do their work. Fire and travel restrictions persist in parts of central and southeastern Manitoba. More information, including a fire restriction map, can be found online.

Wildfires force closure of Manitoba's Whiteshell Provincial park

With the closure coming only days before the start of the May long weekend, some business owners say the decision could come with a heavy financial cost.
