3 Steps To Repair Trust In Any Relationship, By A Psychologist

Many people believe that once trust is broken, it cannot be repaired, and that one shouldn't stay in relationships where the trust is gone. Despite polarizing beliefs on the matter, many partners still choose to stay and work together to rebuild trust. One of the major causes of broken trust between partners is infidelity, but breaches of trust can happen for many other reasons. These can include inconsistency between words and actions, one too many white lies or omissions of important information to appear favorable and even subtle manipulation (whether intentional or unintentional) to maintain control of the relationship's outcomes. Here are three stages all couples must go through to successfully repair broken trust in any relationship. 1. Understanding The Why A 2022 review of research suggests that rebuilding trust is a slow process but generally progresses in three stages: attributional, social equilibrium and structural mechanisms. Attribution focuses on why the trust was broken in the first place. When a partner feels betrayed, they often want to understand whether the betrayal was intentional or unintentional. Betrayal in one's control looks like emotional or physical cheating, hiding debts or lying about major issues concerning the relationship itself. Betrayal beyond one's control may involve situations like forgetting an important date due to stress or feeling overwhelmed, hurting others' feelings unintentionally by making careless comments or blunders made out of misunderstanding rather than malice. This stage also involves assessing whether one or both partners want to move forward from the incident. That means having an open and non-defensive conversation about whether the situation is salvageable for them. This is where the betrayed party asks themselves questions like: When you understand and attribute the betrayal to a forgivable cause, rather than a core character flaw, it becomes the critical first step toward potential repair. The difference lies in whether this is something your partner can change or if it's fundamental to who they are. 2. Restoring The Balance In a 2013 study published in PNAS found that when a breach of trust occurs early in a relationship, people are more likely to engage in conscious skeptical thinking and are less likely to give the other person 'second chances.' But when the same occurs in established relationships, people may consider it a one-off mistake and are more inclined to forgive and trust again. It appears that timing and context can shape our emotional responses in a relationship. When a partner feels betrayed, the relationship can feel unbalanced. One person feels deeply hurt, confused and angry while the other may get defensive, feel guilty or even ashamed. These strong feelings lead to reactivity, which gets in the way of open, clear communication. The goal of this stage is to reestablish a sense of equality and mutual respect as a cornerstone for rebuilding trust. It's also when the person who broke the trust must show up with full accountability, show genuine remorse and offer complete transparency about what happened. But it's equally important for the other partner to also fully express how they feel regarding the incident and the emotional fallout they're experiencing because of it. Restoring fairness involves apologies, but is supported through consistent effort and meaningful actions. It's necessary that both partners feel heard while making amends. This can look like: Repairing broken trust is a gradual process. Progress may appear slow, but it's important to be patient with yourself and focus on small wins along the way. 3. Committing To Transparent Change This stage is all about proving to your partner that you are committed to real change and reassuring them that you won't be repeating past mistakes. Rebuilding safety in the relationship starts with assuaging your partner's doubts and fears. A 2025 review published in the Journal of Family Therapy found that 'fidelity trust' is the most important kind of trust in any romantic relationship, and suggested five recurring elements for rebuilding it: Everyone has a different threshold for trust based on their past experiences, attachment patterns and childhood. For some individuals, trusting again comes more easily, while for others it is more difficult. Regardless of where you fall on this spectrum, rebuilding trust is possible with consistent effort and patience from both partners. Curious where your relationship really stands? 1 Underrated Skill That Uplifts Your Relationship, By A Psychologist

There are days when your self-belief runs dry. Your motivation flickers. The future feels foggy. You know there's something ahead, but you just can't see it clearly. And in romantic relationships, these moments can feel even more fragile. You might question yourself, your partner's intentions or even the relationship's future. A 2022 study published in Social and Personality Psychology Compass offers a powerful lens through which to understand these moments, as invitations to lean into something called 'relational hope.' Unlike the traditional view of hope as an internal, individual trait, new findings suggest that hope also thrives 'between' people, particularly in close relationships. This emerging model of relational hope proposes that couples can build and borrow hope through three key facets: the wills (relational agency), the ways (relational pathways) and the wishes (relational aspirations) that partners co-create over time. In other words, even when you can't summon belief on your own, your relationship can become a vessel for it. Hope doesn't have to begin within you, it can actually be sparked by someone beside you. Here's how relational hope works, and how you can gently lean into it when your self-belief is struggling. 1. Relational Agency Relational agency is the shared energy you and your partner bring to pursue relationship goals, from rebuilding trust and resolving conflict to simply reconnecting after experiencing emotional distance. In long-term relationships, motivation naturally waxes and wanes. Sometimes you'll feel hopeful and driven. Other times your partner will carry that load. And that's a skill you want to embrace. In a 2014 study of 795 married couples, researchers found that each partner's effort directly influenced not only their own relationship satisfaction, but also their spouse's. For example, when one partner reported putting effort into the relationship through care, time or emotional investment, the other partner reported higher satisfaction and lower divorce proneness. This suggests that your partner's motivation can measurably improve your sense of relational security. The study confirms what many couples sense intuitively. Sometimes, it's enough for just one person to believe. To act. To try. That energy is easily contagious, and relationship effort does not work in isolation. So, when you're depleted or doubting yourself constantly, remember that letting your partner 'hold the vision' is a form of co-regulation; a temporary transfer of belief that sustains both people. Your willingness to receive that kind of support says more about your emotional strength than pretending you want to do it all alone. Letting someone believe in you, and in the relationship when you can't, is one of the most courageous relational acts. 2. Relational Pathways Hope is not just about wishing. It's also about knowing how exactly you'll get through something together. In strong relationships, couples don't rely solely on emotion to get them through. They develop strategies or relational pathways that they can return to when things feel heavy. Perhaps a walk around the block, a rule to pause before arguing, a check-in every Friday night. These aren't random habits. They're rituals of regulation. In a 2012 study, researchers found that dyadic coping (managing stress together as a couple) is a stronger predictor of relationship satisfaction than how they cope individually. More interestingly, pragmatic coping, or practical teamwork (like planning, problem-solving and helping each other through action) had mutual benefits for both partners. Emotional support alone didn't show the same effect. So, when one of you says 'We'll get through this,' 'Let's do what always helps us,' or 'This is tough, but we've been here before and now we have better tools to navigate this,' remember that it's not just words of comfort. These are the rays of hope you've built together. They lower stress, improve communication and remind you that you have a way through, and you've walked it before. Perhaps the next time you feel stuck, try asking: 'What's something that has worked for us before when things felt off? Can we try that again?' And remember, you don't need to reinvent hope. Sometimes, all you need is just a reminder of where your experience has helped you store it. 3. Relational Aspirations When the present feels uncertain or strained, talking about the future that you're building together can reignite passion and connection. These relational aspirations, consisting of your desire of growing old side by side, planning a trip or imagining your future home, serve as emotional anchors during difficult times. Additionally, this also affirms your commitment out loud. A 2023 study, for instance, shows that committed partners tend to offer more verbal assurances about the relationship's future and spend more time being physically present with their partner. These small, everyday behaviors like saying 'we'll figure this out' or choosing to sit together after a long day are signs that you're in for a truly shared, supportive future. The 2023 study also shows that these verbal and behavioral investments actually mediate the link between commitment and time spent together, suggesting that the future lives in daily action. When couples engage in conversations, even if casually, perhaps about the life they're creating, it reinforces commitment and builds a sense of continuity that makes it easier to navigate the present. So, next time things feel uncertain, don't be shy to bring up your shared 'why.' Get curious about 'Where do you see us five years from now?' or daydream out loud. Sometimes doing something corny or silly is just what it takes to reaffirm the future you're already investing in today. Remember, however, that blind optimism in unhealthy or completely stagnant relationships can delay necessary change or mask deeper issues. Healthy relational hope is active, not passive. If, at any point, you feel off, reflect on whether: Curious whether your relationship has the hope to carry you through? Take the research-backed Relationship Satisfaction Scale to find out.

If you want to lose fat — I'm a personal trainer, and this is why body fat percentage and mass matter

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Body fat percentage and body fat mass aren't the same thing, so if your goal is to lose fat and look more sculpted or defined, you'll need to know the difference. As a personal trainer, I've spent years helping clients build muscle and strength while losing fat — it's a process called body recomposition. It's a bit like the Holy Grail of fitness goals. But when it comes to the fat loss part, I'm surprised by how many people aren't aware of their body fat percentage and their mass. I recently caught up with some experts who shared their insight into fat mass and fat percentage, the difference and why both matter if your goal is to hone your physique. Here's what they told me. What is body fat mass? Dr. Asim Cheema, an internal medicine and cardiology specialist, explains that body fat mass is the amount of fat tissue in the body, and how much it weighs (measured in pounds or kilograms). 'It represents the total weight of fat in the body, which includes both essential fat and storage fat,' he says. 'Reducing body fat mass involves losing actual fat weight through various lifestyle changes like diet and exercise.' What is body fat percentage? 'Body fat percentage is the proportion of your total body weight that is composed of fat,' Dr. Cheema says. 'For example, a 150-pound person with 30% body fat has 45 pounds of fat mass. This percentage is often used as a measure of overall body composition.' What's the difference? Dr. Cheema says that while body fat mass refers to the actual weight of fat in your body, body fat percentage represents how much of your total weight is fat. 'For instance, someone who weighs 180 pounds and has 15% body fat has a lower fat percentage than someone who weighs 180 pounds with 30% body fat, even though both individuals have the same body fat mass,' he says. Daniel Herman, NASM nutritionist and SAQ coach, adds that body fat mass is made up of essential fat needed for vital functions like hormone regulation and organ protection, and storage fat, which is an excess that your body keeps for energy reserves. He explains body fat percentage slightly differently: 'If you weigh 80kg and have 20kg of fat, your body fat percentage is 25%. But if you gain 5kg of muscle while maintaining 20kg of fat, your percentage will decrease because the fat makes up a smaller proportion of your total weight. 'Body fat mass tells you how much fat you've lost. Body fat percentage shows whether you're becoming leaner — even if your weight doesn't change,' he says. Pros of reducing body fat mass By reducing your overall body fat mass, you can improve various health markers, such as reducing the risk of chronic health conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Dr. Cheema says lower body fat mass can improve physical performance and lead to better muscle definition, increased strength and higher endurance. Then, there's the day-to-day, which includes better mobility and reduced strain on your joints, which can improve pain. Pros of reducing body fat percentage Focusing on reducing body fat percentage primarily improves body composition, resulting in a leaner, more toned appearance. In short, you build or maintain muscle mass while losing fat. Win-Win. 'It can lead to improvements in metabolic health, better insulin sensitivity and a more aesthetic physique,' says Dr. Cheema. 'For athletes or individuals focused on strength training, reducing body fat percentage improves muscle-to-fat ratio, optimizing performance.' Because lean muscle is more metabolically active, you may find your resting metabolic rate also improves. When lean muscle mass increases and fat comes down, this can have a positive impact on functional strength and bone health, not just energy expenditure. This is particularly important as you age and bone and muscle strength begin to decline. Plus, you should feel generally healthier and more able to carry out daily activities. Which is better to focus on? According to Dr. Cheema, it's better to focus on reducing body fat percentage, 'as this not only enhances physical appearance but also signifies improvements in muscle mass and overall fitness.' Yes, body fat mass is important, but Dr. Cheema says tracking body fat percentage is what gives a 'clearer picture of your health and physical progress.' That said, if you need to reduce a number of kilos for medical reasons, this should be the priority to begin with. You can focus on the rest later. If you want to reduce both, Dr. Cheema recommends combining cardio with strength training and a balanced diet. Think high protein and calorie-controlled (here's why I don't recommend counting calories, but for a short time, sure). This should help you reduce fat and build muscle at the same time, plus cardio exercises like running or cycling can help raise your heart rate, step count and energy expenditure. Getting about and completing more steps also improves energy burn outside of exercise. 'If your primary concern is health, focus on reducing body fat mass. If your goal is to look leaner or improve athletic performance, aim to reduce body fat percentage by maintaining or gaining muscle while losing fat,' recommends Herman. Herman agrees that there are a few steps to follow. Nutrition: Eat in a caloric deficit to promote fat loss, prioritizing high amounts of protein, roughly 1.5-2 grams of protein per kg of bodyweight. Of course, balance is key, but during a deficit, it is better to steer clear of excessive sugar and alcohol. Strength training: Resistance training anywhere from two to five sessions per week, depending on your goals and lifestyle. Herman says to include compound exercises like squats, deadlifts and push-ups, which I agree with wholeheartedly. Cardio: 'Walking is underrated — daily steps matter,' says Herman. Moderate-intensity cardio or HIIT are great options, but if you don't enjoy cardio, just focus on your steps. Here's the real minimum number of steps you should take daily. Lifestyle: Herman recommends between seven and nine hours of quality sleep. Stress can elevate cortisol levels and contribute to fat storage, so managing this and keeping energy high is important.
