Stellantis plans $388M parts distribution ‘Megahub' in metro Detroit
This story was originally published on Automotive Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Automotive Dive newsletter. Stellantis is building a $388 million automotive parts 'Megahub' in metro Detroit, the automaker announced in a May 21 press release. The new facility in Van Buren Township is set to be operational by 2027, 'further advancing the efficiency and sustainability' of Stellantis' Mopar service parts distribution network, according to the release. The facility will be key in the automaker's 'long-term plan to modernize and centralize its service parts distribution network', the company said. The 2023 collective bargaining agreement between Stellantis and the United Auto Workers included the automaker's plan to overhaul its parts distribution centers. Consolidation is a major component of Stellantis' plan. The automaker recently sold its Michigan sites in Center Line and Marysville as well as its Milwaukee, Wisconsin parts distribution facility. The centers will continue operating under a sale-leaseback agreement until the metro Detroit Megahub opens, according to the release. Meanwhile, the Warren Sherwood center will be revamped as an e-coat upfitting facility, and Marysville workers will transition to Stellantis' two other nearby Warren facilities until construction of the metro Detroit Megahub is complete. The metro Detroit Megahub will be staffed by 488 UAW-represented workers from the Center Line, Warren, Warren Sherwood and Milwaukee parts distribution center locations, the company said. The metro Detroit Megahub will utilize 'AutoStore' technology, which Stellantis introduced in April at its new East Fishkill, New York parts distribution center, which itself a merger of the former Tappan, New York and Boston parts facilities. The AutoStore system automates parts storage and retrieval by relegating these tasks to robots. Humans then process the parts for shipment. 'With the Metro Detroit Megahub, we're building a faster, smarter and more reliable parts distribution network that puts [customer] needs first,' Darren Bradshaw, senior vice president and head of Mopar North America, said in a statement. 'This investment reflects our commitment to innovation, sustainability and operational excellence, while also creating a modern, high-tech workplace for our employees.' New Ellesmere Port car parts mecca to make life easier for Vauxhall, Citroen, Fiat and Peugeot owners
The owner of Vauxhall, Peugeot and several other car brands is set to open up a multi-million pound parts distribution centre in the UK, which will stock roughly four million parts per year for dozens of models aged up to 10 years old. Stellantis' new parts mecca in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, will sit next to its pre-existing electric van manufacturing plant which currently builds the Vauxhall Combo Life Electric, Peugeot E-Rifter and Citroën ë-Berlingo people carriers. Advertisement - Article continues below Equivalent in size to roughly nine football pitches, the new warehouse occupies a colossal 60,000 square metres and, thanks to 14-metre-high shelving units, can cater for as many as 140,000 different parts. As well as catering for Stellantis stalwarts like Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroen and Fiat, the new distribution centre will also stock parts for the likes of Leapmotor – a new Chinese brand which has recently fallen under the conglomerate's umbrella – in an effort to give customers peace of mind when it comes to parts availability. Yet despite its gigantic size, Stellantis' new site is the first UK warehouse to receive BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology) accreditation. This evaluates the way a building is constructed, what materials are used and how it will be operated in order to determine how environmentally sustainable it is. Manager of the new parts distribution centre, Diane Miller, said the new location 'ensures a more efficient process by bringing all Stellantis brands under one roof. Thanks to the more central location afforded by Ellesmere Port, we also benefit from better transport links for distribution to our 19 regional hubs across the UK and Ireland.' All of this comes shortly after Stellantis pulled the shutters on Vauxhall's iconic Luton manufacturing plant, which resulted in 1,100 job losses. Stellantis had previously threatened to pull out of the UK manufacturing sector altogether due to the tough conditions placed upon brands under the ZEV Mandate, however, investment in the Ellesmere Port plant suggest that Stellantis is here to stay – for now, at least. Stellantis invests $388 million in Metro Detroit Megahub to enhance service
Stellantis has confirmed it will invest $388 million for a new Metro Detroit Megahub location in Van Buren Township, Mich. The company said this is to further advance efficiency and sustainability of its Mopar service parts distribution network. The new facility is expected to open in 2027. 'Our customers count on us to deliver the right part, at the right time, every time,' said Darren Bradshaw, senior vice president and head of Mopar North America. A feature of the Megahub will be AutoStore automated storage and retrieval system. It uses robots that navigate tracks above storage bins, grabbing parts and delivering them as they are needed. AutoStore will help speed up the process in the facility, while maximizing storage and giving more accurate delivery times for customers and dealers. Stellantis recently sold its Michigan parts distribution centre in Center Line and Marysville, and one in Milwaukee, Wis. Operations will continue under a sale-leaseback agreement, giving service until the Metro Detroit Megahub and Warren Sherwood e-coat upfitting facility are finished. Staff from the Center Line, Warren, Warren Sherwood, and Milwaukee parts distribution centres will be part of the Megahub's workforce.

Stellantis announces $388 million investment for hub in Metro Detroit
Stellantis announced on Wednesday a $388 million plan to develop a megahub in Wayne County, Michigan. The company confirmed that the facility will be in Van Buren Township and will launch in 2027. The building will include an automated storage system called AutoStore and a retrieval system. Officials say AutoStore uses robots to retrieve and deliver parts to workstations while employees process the final shipments to enhance speed and accuracy. The facility will have about 488 employees represented by the United Auto Workers union, the company said in a news release. Stellantis said the latest investment is part of a "broader consolidation strategy" and builds upon the automaker's 2023 UAW contract agreements, according to a news release. The company said that under the contract agreement, it has invested $120 million to "strengthen parts and services operations." Those other investments included a new facility in East Fishkill, New York, and improvements to existing distribution centers. The investment comes after Stellantis sold its parts distribution centers in Center Line and Marysville, Michigan, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as part of the consolidation plan. Those locations will serve under a sale-leaseback agreement amid the construction of the megahub. Employees from the Center Line, Warren, Warren Sherwood and Milwaukee parts centers will be shifted to the new Metro Detroit hub. Meanwhile, workers from the Marysville center will be moved to the Warren and Warren Sherwood locations. Stellantis says the Warren Sherwood center will be an e-coating upfitting facility. "Our customers count on us to deliver the right part, at the right time, every time," said Darren Bradshaw, senior vice president and head of Mopar North America, in a statement. "With the Metro Detroit Megahub, we're building a faster, smarter and more reliable parts distribution network that puts their needs first. This investment reflects our commitment to innovation, sustainability and operational excellence, while also creating a modern, high-tech workplace for our employees."
