San Diego Police urge peace at ‘No Kings Day' protest

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Thousands of demonstrators are expected to march through the streets of San Diego County on Saturday as part of the nationwide 'No Kings Day' protests opposing the Trump administration's policies. The demonstrations, which are taking place across the country, are intended to be a show of peaceful resistance against what organizers describe as the administration's 'strong-armed tactics' on immigration enforcement, mass deportations, and sweeping federal budget cuts. Protesters are also voicing concern over impacts on veterans, education, and healthcare access. Nationwide 'No Kings' protests set for this weekend, including across San Diego At a press conference held Friday at the historic Calvary Baptist Church, San Diego faith leaders and activists urged participants to follow the example of civil rights leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and César Chávez by remaining peaceful. 'Society is boiling over. Tensions are high, and when tensions are high like this it causes people to act in ways that are violent, to act in ways that hurt others,' said civil rights activist Shane Harris. San Diego Police Department urges peace, warns against violence in anti-ICE protests 'Do not destroy people's property. Do not destroy businesses or cars. Send a message in a positive way,' added activist Jesse Navarro. Bishop Jody Crawford, a South Bay pastor, echoed the call for unity: 'We just want to come together and stand together in unity.' Oceanside Police won't assist immigration enforcement due to state law Local law enforcement echoed those sentiments, encouraging lawful demonstration while warning of potential consequences for violence or vandalism. 'If those who attend choose to engage in illegal activity, they will be held accountable,' said San Diego Police Lt. Travis Easter. 'If you see something, say something.' The San Diego Police Department says officers will be monitoring the marches and watching for agitators who may attempt to disrupt the events. Organizers say their goal is to protect the integrity of the protest while amplifying voices calling for justice and change. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Palestinian VP says peaceful resistance is path to statehood, urges Hamas to disarm

The best path to achieving a Palestinian state is through peaceful resistance, not armed struggle, Palestinian Authority Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh said on Sunday, urging Hamas to lay down its arms. In an interview with Al Arabiya, al-Sheikh noted that internal divisions have politicized the issue of weapons. The Palestinian Authority 'is in contact with Hamas… and we are currently having a dialogue with the movement,' al-Sheikh said referring to the militant group that is currently at war with Israel in the Gaza Strip. 'Hamas should let go of its arms and agree to a single authority,' he added. Last month, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appointed al-Sheikh, a close aide, as the first ever vice president of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). Founded in 1964, the PLO is empowered to negotiate and sign international treaties on behalf of the Palestinian people, while the PA is responsible for governance in parts of the Palestinian territories. The PLO is an umbrella organization comprising several Palestinian factions, but not the militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad, which are currently at war with Israeli forces in Gaza. Al-Sheikh, 64, is a veteran leader of Abbas's Fatah movement, which dominates the PA, and is considered close to the president. 'Hamas is part of the people and cannot be eliminated from the political life [but] Hamas has to change its policies to become part of our political system,' the newly appointed VP said. As for the future of Gaza, al-Sheikh said that the US was the 'only side' capable of forcing Israel to stop the war in Gaza, while expressing hope that Hamas would also take action that would lead to stopping the war. Al-Sheikh, who met with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman last week, hailed the Saudi position towards the Palestinian plight. He said that MBS affirmed his support to the Palestinian people until they achieve their rights.
