Driver arrested over Dubai hit-and-run incident
A Dubai driver has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run incident that has left a pedestrian severely injured, the emirate's police force said on Thursday. The motorist ran over the victim on July 20 in the Hor Al Anz area of Deira, east Dubai, and fled the scene, said officers. Within two days, a 33-year-old Indian driver was held in connection with the incident. It is also alleged that he took his car to a garage in a bid to have the damage repaired and hide any evidence of the collision. Counsellor Salah Bu Farousha Al Felasi, senior advocate general and head of traffic prosecution, said the driver and the Pakistani garage owner have both been arrested and are currently under investigation. They were apprehended within 48 hours of the incident, Mr Al Felasi added. 'The victim sustained severe injuries and is receiving treatment in hospital. The driver didn't pay attention to the road and escaped the scene,' said in a statement. The two suspects will be referred to the legal prosecutor soon, he added, and Dubai Police will ask for the toughest penalty. The authority didn't disclose any details about the victim. A word of warning Mr Al Felasi urged drivers to stay vigilant and follow traffic rules to prevent accidents. 'Don't escape a traffic accident scene, it is a serious offence,' he added. 'Drivers must report such incidents to the police within three hours, in line with the latest amendments to the traffic law as of March 29 this year.' Drivers who flee the scene of traffic accidents can be jailed for up to one year and/or fined between Dh50,000 ($13,600) to Dh100,000. 'Any attempt to escape responsibility will be faced with strict legal action,' Mr Al Felasi added.

Horror moment sleeping driver ploughs BMW into man after his foot ‘slipped onto accelerator' in busy street
THIS is the moment a dozing driver ploughed into a stranger when his foot slipped onto the accelerator. Abdelrahman Awadalla was catching up on sleep after a weekend at Boomtown music festival, when he accidentally jerked the BMW forward. 4 4 4 Shocking CCTV footage captured the 27-year-old's saloon speed across Victoria Road, North Acton, and into the path of passing pedestrian Martin Gartlan. The incident took place during a busy rush hour period last August. The project manager was carried on the bonnet before the car crashed into two poles and a tree. Meanwhile, sleep-deprived raver Awadalla emerged from the smash unscathed. He can be seen putting something beneath his victim's head before retrieving his belongings from the boot of his BMW. Then, he can be seen fleeing when he hears sirens. Mr Gartlan broke almost every single rib and suffered a fractured neck and leg. Even worse, his heart stopped when he was being treated by medics - forcing them to place him in an induced coma for ten days. Martin later spent five weeks in the intensive care unit at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington. Another pedestrian - Imdadul Kader - was also hit by the speeding car, but escaped with light injuries. He can be seen being struck in the video too, highlighted in green. At Southwark crown court yesterday (FRI), former psychology and criminology uni student Abdelrahman wiped away tears as his victim said he held 'no animosity' towards the driver who nearly killed him. In an impact statement read aloud to the judge by prosecutor Steven Molloy, Mr Gartlan said: 'I have worked my whole life. "I cannot understand why I couldn't get to work safely that morning without something like this happening.' Awadalla pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and causing actual bodily harm. He was handed a 27 month sentence by Judge Sally-Ann Hales KC. While sentencing him, Judge Kanes said: 'On August 13, you drove back from a festival having had little or no sleep for the previous three days and probably still affected by the alcohol and cannabis you had taken the previous night. 'You parked in a side road because you no doubt appreciated you were not fit to drive. 4 'But the state you were in meant you fell asleep at the wheel without safely securing the car. 'As a consequence, you injured two people - one of them very seriously. 'Those offences - combined - are so serious the only appropriate sentence is one of immediate custody.' Awadalla, from Acton, only spoke once in court, saying 'yes boss' when asked his name by the court clerk. But he told of his remorse in a letter to the judge, writing: "I will take any sentence you will give me but just know my time in custody has changed me a lot." Defence barrister Kane Sharpe described Awadalla as genuinely remorseful. According to him, Awadalla had asked after the victim's condition at every single meeting they had had together. The former uni student, who has 16 previous convictions including for drug dealing, was banned from driving for three years.

More than 70,000 RAF claims filed by young South Africans in 5 years
Young people are more vulnerable on the roads with 43.5% of personal claims submitted to the Road Accident Fund (RAF) in the past five years from individuals aged 15-35. The number of claims submitted by individuals in this age group totalled 70,743. Claimants under 15 years filed 15,227 claims. RAF head of corporate communications McIntosh Polela said the high number of young people injured and killed on the roads was 'deeply troubling'. 'Human error is a major factor, and South Africans, especially the youth, must reflect on their behaviour and make better choices,' he said. Polela said longer winter nights increase the risk of accidents, emphasising the need for vigilance. According to the fund, road accidents are a leading cause of death for young people, contributing to about 41% of all road fatalities, averaging 4,620 deaths annually. It said young people are often injured or killed as pedestrians (38%) or passengers (35%). About 24,098 young people in the 15—34 age group were killed on South African roads from 2019 to 2023. Singapore driver charged over City Gate mall crash that injured three pedestrians after taxi mounts pavement
SINGAPORE, June 25 — A 38-year-old man was charged today over a road accident near City Gate mall last December that left three pedestrians injured. Darryl Angus Tan Lingyi faces two charges, including one for allegedly driving without due care and attention at the junction of Jalan Sultan and Minto Road around noon on December 21, 2023, according to a report in The Straits Times published today. Court documents state Tan allegedly caused grievous hurt to a 58-year-old female pedestrian, and also injured two male pedestrians aged 32 and 42 in the same incident. According to the charges, Tan failed to keep a proper lookout while making a discretionary right turn into Minto Road, resulting in a collision with a taxi. The impact caused the taxi to veer left, mount the pavement outside City Gate shopping mall, and hit the three pedestrians. ComfortDelGro, the taxi operator, said in 2023 that the driver sustained minor injuries and there were no passengers in the vehicle at the time. Tan is scheduled to return to court on July 23. If convicted of causing grievous hurt by driving without due care, he faces up to two years' jail, a fine of up to S$5,000 (RM16,570), or both. For causing hurt under similar circumstances, a first-time offender can be jailed for up to a year, fined up to S$2,500, or both.
