How to put together a posh planter: a step-by-step guide
The plantsman and gardener Alexander Hoyle moves in rarified circles: he creates gardens for both smart city homes and historic country houses, and floral displays for high-end clients including the interior design shops along London's Pimlico Road. His love for plants was born during his childhood in the Cotswolds, and his style, which he describes as 'modern English country garden', was honed during his training at Aberglasney in Carmarthenshire and Kew Gardens in London. Yet despite this pedigree, he is down to earth and informal, with a relaxed and naturalistic aesthetic that is, he says, is 'a little wild and fanciful'. His work can currently be seen at the entrance garden of the WOW!house decorator showcase at Design Centre Chelsea Harbour until July 3, where he has created a display of hundreds of planters filled with a variety of seasonal flowers and greenery. Here, he offers a step-by-step guide to putting together a beautiful planter in a similar romantic style. Plant list: 1 x foxglove 1 x Orlaya grandiflora 1 x Euphorbia pithyusa 1 x Centranthus ruber 'Albus' 5 x Lysimachia atropurpurea 'Beaujolais' 5 x Erigeron karvinskianus 1 x Helianthemum 'Wisley Primrose' Top tip Alexander likes to use odd numbers of plants, to give a more natural effect, and he uses a mix of perennials and annuals. Step one Select a large planter – Alexander collects antique and vintage pots and planters, and in this case he is using a vintage copper pot that was originally the inside of a washing machine, with a verdigris patina. Fill your pot with peat-free compost, leaving enough room at the top for the rootball of the largest of your plants. Step two Start with your first anchor plant – here, the foxglove – and place it towards the front of the pot (Alexander points out that even if you place your planter in a spot where it can be seen from all sides, there is often a natural 'front' to an arrangement). Step three Continue to add your anchor plants – here, the orlaya, euphorbia and centranthus – and space them out a little within the planter, in a way that looks as if they have grown there naturally. Try to ensure there is a gentle gradation in the height of your plants, to give your arrangement some movement. Step four Fill in the body of your arrangement with the lysimachia plants. Alexander has split his five plants into a group of two and a group of three, and placed them among the anchor plants, so that it looks as though the latter are growing up through the lysimachia, as they would in nature. Step five Add the helianthemum towards the front of the arrangement, so that it spills over the edge of the pot. Alexander acknowledges that yellow can be a controversial colour for some, but here it adds an accent of colour that contrasts with the verdigris finish of the planter. Step six Fill in the edge of your arrangement around the rim of the pot with the erigeron plants, again placing them at a slight angle so that they trail over the edge of the planter and soften the edges of the pot. Step seven

Cheap £10 product from The Range can elevate your garden's privacy – it also adds a ‘touch of style'
A BUDGET buy can help to level up your garden's privacy ahead of the summer. And if you're worried about your outdoor aesthetic, don't because this decor will also add a "touch of style" to your space. 2 If you're looking to level up your garden's privacy without adding an eyesore privacy fence, there are other options available. Gardening experts suggest getting creative with your green fingers and adding natural barriers to your space. And if the idea of tending to hedges of climbing plants is a little overwhelming, this budget buy may be a more suitable option. In fact, it's also ideal for outdoor spaces that don't have any grass at all. The Large Egg Cup Planter Glazed Plant Pot is available from The Range for just £9.51. Measuring 33 centimetres in diameter and 31 centimetres in height, this oversized planter is described as "strong and durable". It has six drainage holes on the base and is said to give your garden an "elegant" look. The glazed planter is available in green, blue, red, or grey. According to the experts at Good Build Superstore, this addition can help to make your garden feel more private. "Introducing oversized potted plants is another creative way to boost your garden privacy while adding a touch of greenery and style," they said. I made a DIY fence for £68 with pallets from Facebook Marketplace - it gives more privacy & people say it's 'fantastic' "Screening your garden with tall and dense foliage plants in large pots can make instant privacy screens on patios, decks or even directly on the ground." And they pointed out that this step is ideal for those renting their space. "By placing oversized potted plants along the perimeter of your outdoor space or in areas where you would like privacy, you can infuse a sense of seclusion without the need for permanent structures or extensive landscaping," they added. The experts also highlighted a major advantage to this form of DIY privacy in your garden. "Plus, the versatility of potted plants allows you to rearrange them as necessary, making it easy to adapt your privacy solutions to changing seasons or preferences," they explained. How to create privacy in your garden CREATING privacy in your garden can be achieved in a number of ways depending on your budget, and the size of your space. Here are some effective ways to enhance privacy in your garden: 1. Fencing Install a tall, solid wooden or vinyl fence. This is one of the most straightforward ways to gain immediate privacy. Or use lattice panels, trellis, or slatted fencing to add a decorative touch while still offering privacy. 2. Hedges and Plants Fast-growing evergreen shrubs or trees like Leylandii, Thuja, or Bamboo along the boundary of your garden can help with privacy. Grow a dense hedge using plants like Boxwood, Privet, or Laurel. It may take time to grow, but it provides a natural and green privacy screen. Use climbers like Ivy, Clematis, or Wisteria on fences or trellises to create a lush, green privacy barrier. 3. Outdoor Curtains Hang outdoor curtains around pergolas, gazebos, or patios for an easy-to-adjust privacy solution. 4. Sound Barriers A water fountain or small waterfall can help drown out noise, adding to the sense of privacy. Or install fencing designed to reduce noise if privacy from sound is also a concern. Or you can add a stylish touch to your privacy fence with a B&M buy. And another B&M item can help shield you from nosy neighbours and the sun. Meanwhile, a Home Bargains buy is said to add a touch of glamour to your garden. And a £10 B&M product adds inches to your fence, elevating your garden's privacy. You can also add a stylish touch to your privacy fence with another B&M buy.
