Tyler, The Creator to Alex G: July's hits, headlines, and new releases
News24's Weekender playlist looks at the month that was through music, with Joel Ontong reflecting on the headlines and new releases. July saw top-notch releases from artists such as Tyler, The Creator; Alex G; and Tyla. Tyler, The Creator's somewhat surprise release DON'T TAP THE GLASS takes a more straightforward approach compared to his previous records. The rapper explicitly told his fans that he wasn't trying to make a concept album and just wanted to give them a collection of quality songs. Alex G's remarkably consistent discography continues with his new record, Headlights, which is stuffed with well written and produced indie-folk songs, injected with his signature quirk. Tyla has been teasing her mixtape We Wanna Party all month, releasing the singles IS IT and BLISS. She also made an appearance on Travis Scott's poorly received JackBoys 2. Coldplay were in the headlines, but not for their music. During one of their concerts, Chris Martin joked about a couple hiding their faces after being caught on the kiss cam, asking if they are having an affair. And, allegedly, they were. Hip hop veteran Lauryn Hill has been announced as a headliner of the DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival, while the Hey Neighbour festival (which previously announced Doja Cat and Leon Thomas) has been postponed to December. Beyoncé has potentially joined the lost albums club, after her unreleased music was stolen. AI band The Velvet Sundowns also got more than a million listeners on Spotify, a first for a completely digitally generated band. We have not included any of their songs in our playlist and instead added the real thing, like Tame Impala and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Oasis made their grand comeback after a 15 year hiatus, kicking off their tour with a concert in Cardiff, Wales, on 4 July. The music world also said goodbye to a true giant of rock, Ozzy Osbourne. His legendary band Black Sabbath are one of the key pioneers of metal music, and you could even be forgiven for saying they basically invented it. Pretty Little Baby achieved online virality.

Tobi's high-energy motivational anthem, and 3 more songs you need to hear this week
Scroll down to discover the songs our producers are loving right now. For even more new music, check out our SYNTH playlist on Youtube. He's So Good, Tobi When Nova Scotia hip-hop producer and rapper Classified sent Tobi a pack of beats, the Toronto rapper said that what's now the backbone of He's So Good immediately stood out to him. "It was high-energy, positive, very confident," Tobi explained via email, and recorded his lyrics, freestyle, right away. The result is an affirmation song heavy with swagger, as compliments tumble out verse after verse over bright horn samples and a Classified Easter egg: that tongue-in-cheek "you gonna find out" is a sample from his 2006 song Find Out, as he told Exclaim!. "My mission with this song was to create something that I could say to myself in the morning before tackling the day," wrote Tobi, and it's a fitting chapter from his new album, Elements, Vol. 2, which braids Tobi's vulnerabilities with the award-winning rapper's well-earned confidence. — Holly Gordon Wheel, Living Hour On Oct. 17, Winnipeg band Living Hour will return with their fourth studio album, Internal Drone Infinity. Its lead single, Wheel, is a powerful jolt of shoegaze-inspired rock full of dreamy vocals, but punctuated by a palpable angst. The track was inspired by an experience singer Sam Sarty went through buying a car off of Facebook Marketplace that turned out to be junk. "I was driving through the mountains, and the headlights were so dim, and for a stretch there was nowhere to turn off," she explained in a press release. "It felt like a weird, horrific video game – navigating the road and dodging danger and trying not to die. I also felt so deeply betrayed by all the men involved in the whole thing." Wheel finds Sarty reclaiming that experience and turning the tables on those men, putting them in the same danger they put her in, posing the scenario: "What happened/ When I went/ Falling off the wheel." — Melody Lau Nothing to Do, Emmett Jerome Country singer-songwriter Emmett Jerome has crafted a sunny ode to growing up in a small town with his latest track, Nothing to Do. Over shimmering pedal steel and a warm harmonica riff, he looks back on fond memories of Bragg Creek, Alta., defined by moonlit nights, red dirt roads and stolen cases of beer. The intoxicating hold of nostalgia keeps Jerome in its grip as he sings, "I can walk into any liquor store and lay my money down, it just don't feel the same." A warm synchronicity flows through the song, which can be attributed to the track being recorded live off the floor: "We wanted to use the same technology our favourite classic records were made with. Real analog gear and real musicians," he said in a press release. Next up, he'll be dropping a new song every few weeks throughout the summer. — Natalie Harmsen Colorado, TX, Mah Moud It's been a fair while since we've heard new music from Mah Moud. The Toronto artist's last release was 2022's abdalla, an explorative and spellbinding debut album that made CBC Music's best albums list that year. In November, he teased some new music while opening for Mustafa at Roy Thomson Hall, and now, eight months later, it's finally here. Colarado, TX is the first single from Mah Moud's upcoming album, Alexander Mure's songs in the key of C-minus. After witnessing the effects of gentrification on his life-long neighbourhood of Leslieville, Mah Moud created the character of Alexander Mure to symbolize the heartbreak, rage and anxiety that come with feeling pushed out of your home. Colorado, TX is the introduction to Mure, a vigilante outlaw, who after being gentrified out of his home takes a journey back, only to find the Toronto he returns to is unrecognizable. The country-folk road song is anchored by Mah Moud's soaring, impassioned vocals and a meandering pedal steel that mimics the nomadic journey Mure has embarked on. — Kelsey Adams

The winner takes it all but Leah Williamson won't ‘banish Abba' for Sweden clash
England captain Leah Williamson joked she will not 'banish Abba' in the dressing room ahead of Thursday's Euro 2025 quarter-final clash with Sweden in Zurich. The Swedish band's 'Does Your Mother Know' became a key track on the Williamson-curated dressing room playlist during England's triumphant Euro 2022 campaign, where they beat Sweden 4-0 in the last four – a defeat made 'easier to bear' by the use of the song, according to Abba's own Bjorn Ulvaeus. It was a closer affair when they met in the qualifiers for this tournament, drawing twice, including the goalless July 2024 stalemate that was enough for England to book a direct place in the finals. Hearing some Swedish fans had claimed Abba were better than the Beatles, and therefore Sweden would beat England, Williamson replied: 'I don't (agree with that) I'm afraid. One might be easier to dance to, but no. 'I don't think that will be on the playlist, but it worked in 2022 so I don't want to banish Abba completely.' The England centre-back is gearing up for a battle with Arsenal team-mate Stina Blackstenius. In May, the Swedish forward struck in the winning goal in Lisbon, where the Gunners lifted the Champions League trophy with a 1-0 victory over heavy favourites Barcelona. Blackstenius has already contributed two goals at these Euros for Group C winners Sweden, but is just one of the threats on what Williamson feels is a 'very organised team' that 'work for each other' and 'deserve a bit more recognition'. 'Stina is an incredibly powerful footballer,' said Williamson. 'I think she's very intelligent with her runs, she's a hard player to play against in that respect. I was celebrating her success at Arsenal, and not so much now. 'So we'll see, but she's a great player and she has been for many years now, so her experience speaks for itself.' Despite their familiarity, an international tournament is a rare chance for the club-mates to properly battle it out. 'It's different,' explained Williamson. 'Obviously playing against each other in training (it's) maybe in a drill with restrictions, but it's very rare that I'll play against her in this setting. 'So I enjoy it. I like Stina, so it's tough to just remove all that to then just go at it, and you don't want to focus too much (on it). 'There's loads of different things that come into play when you play against a team-mate, but I think I've know Stina long enough now that it's kind of fun. 'I know who she is, and it's time for us to focus on us.' Williamson captained England to the trophy at Wembley in 2022 but missed the World Cup after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury in April 2023, just months before the tournament. She added: 'I was part of that squad, and I will forever be proud to have been part of that squad, but we don't want it to be the only one. 'It's a constant driver. You want to do more. You always want to do more, and I'd like to say that on that day I felt as happy as I ever felt, and that probably would have been enough for me, but the next day it creeps around and everybody wants more all the time.'

Justin Bieber Surprises With ‘Swag,' and 10 More New Songs
Every Friday, pop critics for The New York Times weigh in on the week's most notable new tracks. Listen to the Playlist on Spotify here (or find our profile: nytimes) and at Apple Music here, and sign up for The Amplifier, a twice-weekly guide to new and old songs. Justin Bieber, 'Daisies' Justin Bieber has surprise-released a 21-song album, 'Swag,' full of lo-fi experiments and unexpected collaborators. The singer has always been a savvy talent scout, and he concocted 'Daisies' with the quick-fingered guitarist and the producer Dijon. 'Daisies' is a bare-bones track: a lone electric guitar, drums and Bieber's vocals, mostly using a vintage doo-wop chord progression (I-VI-IV-V) and juxtaposing vulnerability and strength. Bieber sounds needy but sure of his legitimacy: 'Whatever it is,' he sings, 'You know I can take it.' Syd, 'Die for This' Syd (formerly Syd tha Kid from the band the Internet) ardently embraces the pleasures of the moment in 'Die for This.' A drum machine and plush vocal harmonies buoy her through sentiments like 'We can have forever tonight' and 'It feels like heaven with you tonight.' She's absolutely all in; has she convinced her partner? Tyla, 'Is It' 'Am I coming on a little strong?' Tyla teases in 'Is It,' a dance-floor flirtation that's both a come-on and an assertion of power. 'Is it the idea that I like, or do I really wanna make you mine?' Tyla asks herself, then advances further. The beat is spartan — often just percussion and a few distorted bass notes — but a chorus of male voices joins her as she takes charge. Flo and Kaytranada, 'The Mood' The British R&B trio Flo juggles a tricky situation in 'The Mood': saying no for one night, promising future sensual kicks and soothing a partner's perhaps fragile ego. With a purring bass line and a subdued four-on-the-floor beat provided by Kaytranada's production, they apologize, 'It's just that I ain't in the mood tonight.' But they hasten to add, 'I swear you're the only one who does it right.' They also slyly pay homage to their R&B role models by slipping some old song titles into the lyrics. Danny L Harle featuring PinkPantheress, 'Starlight' The hyperpop producer Danny L Harle has kept busy as a collaborator, but 'Starlight' is his first song since 2021 to claim top billing, and it's just swarming with ideas. With her piping voice run through all sorts of gizmos, PinkPantheress sings about misplaced longings: 'I've met someone like you / They don't love me back.' Around her, Harle's production accelerates from wistful electronic lament to manic, pounding electro-pop, strewing countermelodies all over the place. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
