French fishing trawler came ‘face to face' with Russian sub

A French fishing trawler came face to face with a Russian attack submarine when it surfaced in the English Channel off the coast of Brittany. The crew of the 25 metre Belenos trawler were shocked to see the Kilo-class vessel break the surface of the water just metres away from their boat as they were fishing near the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey. One image, taken by a crew member, appears to show a figure emerging from the front of the conning tower, the raised structure that acts as the command centre. Reports of the Russian craft's presence came as a French admiral on Wednesday revealed that a shadow fleet of 'around 900' ghost ships run by Russia, North Korea and Iran, ply the waves, with 'a dozen' passing through the Channel every day. According to data from MarineTraffic, a ship tracking tool, the Belenos left Roscoff in Brittany at about 9am on Saturday. It then fished north of Roscoff, approaching the west coast of the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey when the encounter took place. Ouest-France, the regional paper that broke the story, cited the Atlantic Maritime Prefecture, based in Brest, as playing down the incident. It said: 'It's a submarine that had been tracked for some time; it was simply in transit.' However, the paper said it was 'very unusual for such a vessel to surface so close to a fishing boat'. The prefecture said: 'A French frigate accompanied it as it headed south to enter the Mediterranean or sail along the African coast, as Russian units from the Northern Fleet [based in Severomorsk] or the Baltic Fleet [in Kaliningrad] regularly do. 'In general, Russian submarines do not hide because they know [we] are aware of their presence.' 'Only France dispatched a ship, but the information 'was passed on to allies', as required by protocol.' The name of the submarine has not been disclosed but it appears to be a conventional diesel-electric attack submarine, such as those of the Kilo-class, which are produced in large numbers by Russia. Breton fishermen are wary of clashing with submarines since the sinking of the Bugaled Breizh trawler on Jan 15 2004, which caused the death of all five crew members. For years, the cause of the sinking was thought to be a collision with a Western submarine, but an inquest in 2021 found that the vessel was likely to have sunk because of a snagging of its equipment on the seabed, which forced it to stop and take on water. The trawler sank in the waters off Lizard Point, not far from the area where the Belenos was operating on June 28. The incident came as a French admiral told MPs that a ghost fleet of boats used to transport petrol in circumvention of sanctions may number 'around 900 ships'. Admiral Benoit de Guibert, the maritime prefect for the Channel and the North Sea, said: 'The state's action is primarily to keep a particularly close watch on this fleet, which is estimated to consist of around 900 ships, including a dozen that are tracked daily in the English Channel.' The clandestine fleet 'does not only concern Russian interests, but also those of other countries such as Iran and North Korea', he told MPs. His assessment came after it emerged that a Russian warship disguised itself using a fake ID signal while travelling through the English Channel with two sanctioned oil tankers. The Boikiy – a corvette armed with guided missiles – broadcast the fake ID code as it passed through the Channel earlier this month, according to the BBC. It travelled alongside two vessels known to be part of Russia's 'shadow fleet' – a network of tankers whose ownership can be obscured and are used to transport sanctioned oil products. It is thought that recent Western moves against the shadow fleet may have prompted Moscow to use its military to protect the tankers. Last month, a Russian Su-35 fighter jet flew past a shadow fleet vessel and entered Estonian airspace after the country attempted to intercept the ship, which was suspected of carrying sanctioned oil. Dmitry Gorenburg, a senior research scientist at the Centre for Naval Analyses, told the BBC: 'The action seems designed to deter the UK and other Nato states from attempting to board and, or, seize these vessels, since the presence of a military escort heightens the risk of confrontation and further escalation.' BIG blow: Kaizer Chiefs to miss out on Bafana Bafana youngster!

Kaizer Chiefs are on the verge of missing out on a free transfer for a Bafana Bafana youngster this window. Chiefs were rumoured to be finalising a deal to sign SuperSport United defender Ime Okon on a free transfer. Okon is set to be a free agent in a week's time, this after the conclusion of his contract with SuperSport. Having recently played for Bafana in the COSAFA Cup, rumours swirled that he was signing for Chiefs . Then more reports came out of arch rivals Orlando Pirates also joining the race for his signature. Now that he is done with international duty, the player and his camp are finalising his future. According to iDiski Times , his future doesn't lie with either Chiefs or Pirates. According to the publication, Okon is on his way to Germany to conclude a deal with an unnamed side. 'SuperSport United defender Ime Okon is on the verge of joining an unnamed German side on a free transfer. Okon has been heavily linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs in the past few weeks with the 21-year-old centre-back having been impressive since making his debut for Matsatsantsa in August 2023. This publication has it in good authority that an unnamed German side is on the verge of agreeing personal terms with Okon and will sign him on a free transfer. Should Okon's camp reach an agreement with the German side, he will fly over for medicals.' Wrote the publication. It now remains to be seen which German club he will be signing for and at which level do they ply their trade. Okon was rumoured to be on the verge of joining a Ukrainian side in Dynamo Kyiv just in January. It now seems that his destiny is abroad, a big blow to Chiefs if they, indeed, tried to sign him. Chiefs fans will it hurt to see Okon move elsewhere and miss out on him for free? Let us know by clicking on the comment tab. Or by emailing info@ or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Cadastral map of the lake mentioned in MLAs' petition vanishes from the HMDA website

Four Congress party legislators approached the High Court on Monday (June 16) with a public interest litigation, alleging encroachment and fraudulent deals on a land parcel in Khajaguda village which they contend as belonging to government, and where a reputed builder is raising an expensive condominium complex. In the petition, the legislators — Janampalli Anirudh Reddy, Yennam Srinivas Reddy, Murali Naik Bhukya and Kuchkulla Rajesh Reddy — alleged that the venture encroached upon a lake in Khajaguda, apart from the government land. The satellite images from April this year show that a large portion of the lake's FTL area has been cleared and levelled and a path has been made through the lake for the heavy vehicles to ply to the construction site. A compound wall and temporary structures can be seen encroaching into the buffer area, as demarcated in the Irrigation department maps. The lake in question is mentioned as Nanakram Kunta in Nanakramguda village of the Rangareddy district in the records of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, with the lake id, 3712. Final notification for the lake was issued in May, 2016, two years after the preliminary notification. Since all the lakes within the Outer Ring Road have been brought under the lake protection committee constituted with the chief of the Hyderabad Disaster Response & Asset Protection Agency Mr. Anirudh Reddy also brought the issue to Mr. Ranganath's notice through a letter in March this year. In the petition to the High Court, the petitioners alleged manipulation of the survey numbers by the Revenue department leading to the fraudulent transactions. Arousing suspicions on that front, the cadastral map of the lake has vanished from the HMDA's website, where the survey numbers and their locations within the lake's boundaries and outside are to be found. Instead, a document with merely the survey numbers in FTL & buffer areas is uploaded, where the government land within the lake's FTL is mentioned as 6 acres and 17 guntas, and within buffer, as 34 guntas. The FTL (full tank level) map of the lake mentions the area of the water body as 6.52 acres. The water spread area, through remaining below 50% during the past 15 years, could have been much higher as can be seen from the historical satellite images from Google Earth. An image from October 2022 shows water spread even in the area outside the FTL map, which is corroborated by the contours shown by an elevation path. The sprawling campus of Maulana Azad National Urdu University serves as the catchment for Nanakram Kunta as do the open lands in the surrounding areas which sustain several lakes such as Bhageerathamma Cheruvu, Khajaguda Pedda Cheruvu and Yellamma Cheruvu in the vicinity. The project has been registered with the Real Estate Regulatory Authority, with a building permission by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. An online realty portal mentions the price of the luxury apartments ranging between ₹6.5 crore and ₹19 crore. Interestingly enough, a pictorial representation of the venture on the builder's website shows several surrounding lakes, including Bhageerathamma Cheruvu, Khajaguda Pedda Cheruvu, Yellamma Cheruvu, and other minor water bodies too, but not the lake on the banks of which it is coming up.

Rory McIlroy walks the talk as he prepares to clock air miles to grow golf globally

Rory McIlroy tees off on the third hole during the third round of the PGA Championship golf tournament at Quail Hollow. PHOTO: IMAGN IMAGES Even before he became only the sixth man to complete golf's career Grand Slam with a win for the ages at the Masters Tournament in April, Rory McIlroy already had a voice in the game, and a big one too. He often spoke with candour, boldness and purpose on issues that mattered especially during his time as a policy board member on the PGA Tour, and along with Tiger Woods, he is among a rare few who is highly respected by his peers and the sport's administrators. The main thing is – McIlroy walks the talk. When LIV Golf, backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, emerged on to the scene a few years ago and lured some big stars with millions, the world No. 2 from Northern Ireland stayed loyal to the PGA Tour and backed it up with his reasons. 'It's not for me,' McIlroy said candidly. 'I'm too much of a traditionalist. I love winning golf tournaments and looking at the trophy and seeing that Sam Snead won this trophy or Ben Hogan or Gene Sarazen or Jack Nicklaus or Gary Player, Tiger Woods, Nick (Faldo), whoever it is. The people that came before me.' While the United States is now his second home and primary playground, the 36-year-old is sticking true to his word about the need for him and other stars to ply their trade internationally and reach out to new fans. At the start of 2024, he spoke passionately about the importance for golfers to broaden their horizons and help maintain the momentum of golf's growth and participation data around the world, which picked up pace following Covid-19. 'If everyone is talking about growing the game,' McIlroy said in 2024, 'especially if these investors are going to come into our game and they want a return on their capital, I think everyone needs to start thinking more globally around it.' He will live up to those very words, with three big overseas trips confirmed for the end of the year. The five-time major champion has committed to the Australian Open in 2025 and 2026, and he will tee up in the inaugural DP World India Championship in October. Earlier this week, McIlroy confirmed a return to November's Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, with all three tournaments sanctioned by the DP World Tour. The announcements are massive boosts for local organisers, with Kapil Dev, an Indian cricket legend turned golf administrator, saying it is 'a landmark moment for Indian golf and its fans'. McIlroy will become the first reigning Masters champion to tee up at historic Delhi Golf Club from October 16 to 19 and will no doubt be a crowd-puller, as was reigning US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau who proved to be a hit at the International Series India on the Asian Tour earlier this season. Such is McIlroy's mega appeal that it was reported Golf Australia pulled off the biggest single day of ticket sales in the event's 121-year history a day after it was announced he would play at Royal Melbourne from December 4 to 7. He won the Australian Open in 2013, a tournament where past champions include Sarazen, Arnold Palmer, Nicklaus and Player. The Australian Open has always been regarded by McIlroy as one of golf's jewels, and he hopes his two-year commitment will deliver new impetus for golf in the sports-mad nation. 'The success of the Australian Open is important for the global game, and I'm incredibly confident it will thrive again this year,' he said. Melbourne has previously staged the Presidents Cup in 1998, 2011 and 2019, with all three events generating a combined economic impact of more than A$121 million (S$100.8 million), and over 315,000 spectators, including 47,000 visitors to the state of Victoria. Throughout his career, McIlroy has traversed the international airways to compete on golf's finest fairways and has triumphed in places like Hong Kong, Shanghai and Dubai, and made appearances in countries like Japan and even Malaysia. Not only will he showcase his extraordinary talent which has earned him 29 wins on the PGA Tour and 19 titles on the DP World Tour, he is expected to spend some valuable time with junior golfers. 'I'm excited to not only tee it up in India for the first time but also visit a country that I've always wanted to explore,' said McIlroy. 'I've always enjoyed playing a global schedule and as I have previously said, there is tremendous potential to grow golf further in the country. This is a great opportunity, and I can't wait to play in front of Indian golf fans.' With McIlroy walking the talk, the impact of his appearances in India, Abu Dhabi and Australia will be astronomical. Heavy vehicles ignore ban, jam Ghodbunder highway

Thane: Motorists faced major inconvenience as hundreds of heavy freight vehicles clogged the Ghodbunder Highway, defying restrictions imposed on their movement for four days to facilitate prompt repair work of the highway stretch at Gaimukh Ghat. The Thane traffic police banned all heavy and multi-axle freight vehicles from using the highway in both directions from Saturday to Monday midnight, as two lanes at the ghat were shut for repairs. However, many transporters — particularly from JNPT, Nashik, and Mumbai — apparently ignored the advisory, causing a massive pile-up at the mouth of the highway at Majiwada starting Friday night. This compelled the authorities to allow the trucks to ply toward Borivli, a move that backfired when these vehicles got stuck in the ghat section, leading to an 8-km tailback stretching to Kapurbawdi by morning. "The restriction for trucks was meant to prevent congestion at the repair site, as multi-axle trucks would struggle with frequent lane switching. But our plan failed," a senior traffic official admitted. "We deployed extra personnel and diverted stranded trucks from the Borivali-bound lanes to take U-turns at Manpada, Anand Nagar, and Waghbil junctions. We also tracked down truck owners and warned of legal action if vehicles weren't cleared." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo Despite fewer vehicles on Saturday morning, office-goers still faced delays. Hemant Gupta reported being stuck for hours, stating, "Heavy vehicles were supposed to be banned, but they were everywhere. No updates, no traffic cops advising commuters." Neha Thakker was stranded at Owala for 45 minutes and had to cancel a meeting in Borivali. While the city limits remained clear by evening, motorists Jayant Bhat and Keyur Gondalia complained of congestion at the repair site even by evening. Transporters, already frustrated by frequent delays, claimed they were given too little time to plan alternate routes. The Ghodbunder Highway is a crucial connector for traffic between Gujarat, Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, the Konkan region, and Nashik, with over one lakh vehicles using it daily.
