Table no-confidence vote in Parliament if you dare, Anwar tells critics
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said political stability must be preserved to safeguard economic growth. (Bernama pic) SEBERANG PERAI : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has challenged his critics to table a vote of no confidence in the Dewan Rakyat if they wish to take over Putrajaya. He said building a nation takes time, but 'tearing it down is easy'. 'I know there are those who want to bring down the government. That is your right, but follow the proper process. 'Table a vote of no confidence in Parliament. If you don't have enough support, wait for the general election. Don't resort to street demonstrations or inciting the public,' he said at the National Unity Week celebration at Stadium Batu Kawan here today. Present were national unity minister Aaron Ago Dagang and Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow. Perikatan Nasional has planned a 'Turun Anwar' mass rally for July 26 to push for Anwar's resignation. The organisers claim they expect up to 300,000 participants, although a similar protest in Shah Alam earlier this month drew just over 300. Anwar also called for caution in responding to voices of hatred, including those from a handful of religious figures. He, however, did not name them. 'Many religious scholars are sincere. Just yesterday, I met with scholars from Indonesia, Morocco, Syria and India, all of whom offered wise counsel. 'Tonight, from Penang, I will head to Masjid Putra in Putrajaya for a gathering of religious teachers. I want to hear their advice as well,' he said. Earlier, Anwar said Malaysia has been recognised as a peaceful nation in the region, adding that this is not his achievement alone but the result of cooperation between ministries, civil servants, and corporate leaders. 'Political stability attracts investment, and investment drives economic growth. That is why many world leaders are choosing Malaysia as a venue for dialogue,' he said. He pointed out that foreign ministers from the US, China, Russia, as well as leaders from the Gulf countries, Brazil and South Africa have expressed their intention to attend the Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur in October. Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli has also said that Anwar should remain as prime minister until the end of his term to ensure political stability amid economic uncertainty.

Anwar's position unshaken, AMK says rally won't dent support in Parliament
IPOH, July 14 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's position as Prime Minister is strong and will not be affected by any efforts to undermine him, including through 'Himpunan Turun Anwar' rally scheduled to be held in the federal capital on July 26. Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim said the Prime Minister continues to command the support of the majority of Members of Parliament in the Unity Government. 'Attempts to challenge the prime minister's position through rallies have no impact on the current political stability and lack clear direction. 'It is merely an effort to stir unrest, causing public anxiety without offering any constructive solutions,' he told a press conference after opening the Tambun Parliamentary Constituency Islamic Arts Carnival and Mahabbah MADANI Night at the Al-Amin Mosque compound here, last night. Muhammad Kamil, who is also the Political Secretary to the Minister of Finance, said he remains confident the people are now more discerning in their judgment and will not be easily swayed by rallies orchestrated by opposition leaders. 'However, we continue to uphold the principles of democracy and do not obstruct their right to assemble as guaranteed by the Constitution,' he said. He said the government is now focused on efforts to stabilise the cost of living, boost investor confidence and ensure more effective policy delivery for the benefit of the people. Regarding the carnival, Muhammad Kamil said that the two-day event, which began last Saturday, attracted over 10,000 visitors. He said the main objective of the event was to strengthen the role of agencies in promoting Islamic and spiritual activities in the community, while fostering the spirit of 'hijrah'. — Bernama

Perhaps even one that might benefit from US President Donald Trump's deglobalization agenda? Then you should be looking at Latin America. On this week's Merryn Talks Money, Jose Manuel Silva, chief investment officer and partner of LarrainVial Asset Management, joins host Merryn Somerset Webb to explain why investors should be thinking more actively about the region. The pair discuss how Trump's change in economic policy—retreating from the wider world and focusing more on the US—could benefit Latin American markets; why Latin American economies sometimes fail to properly monetize their natural resources; why low debt-to-GDP ratios in the big Latin American countries should get much more attention; and finally, the companies you might want to look at for your portfolio.

Pressure on Turkey Opposition Grows With Probe Into Party Leader
Turkey launched an investigation into the main opposition party's leader and arrested more of its mayors, in a widening crackdown that's likely to stoke investor anxiety over risks to the rule of law and political stability. Prosecutors started the probe into Republican People's Party Chairman Ozgur Ozel late Sunday on allegations of insulting the president and threating public officials in a speech in which he criticized the detention of the three of the party's mayors, according to the state-run Anadolu Agency.

Penang Umno man moots cooling-off period before govt parties accept defectors
Penang Umno information chief Noor Ahmad said the unity government should set up a disciplinary committee to investigate cases of 'member poaching' in tandem with an improved MoU. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A Penang Umno leader has proposed a cooling-off period among parties in the unity government before the acceptance of defectors, following the exit of Supreme Council member Tengku Zafrul Aziz from the party. Noor Ahmad, the Penang Umno information chief, said Umno should strengthen its memorandum of understanding (MoU) with other government component parties to ensure political stability. 'The MoU should include clear provisions for a 'cooling-off period' before any party accepts new members from another component party – especially high-ranking ones – to ensure mutual stability and fairness,' he said in a statement. Noor also said the unity government should set up a disciplinary committee to investigate cases of 'member poaching', in tandem with an improved MoU. 'Component parties should also consider amending their constitutions to prohibit any defecting member from holding coalition positions if they switch to another party within the alliance,' he added. Yesterday, the Umno Supreme Council reaffirmed its position that it is inappropriate for parties within the unity government to recruit members from other component parties. Although no names were explicitly mentioned, the statement is widely believed to refer to the move by Tengku Zafrul, the former Kota Raja Umno chief. 'Constitutionally, there is little to prevent such ethically questionable moves,' Noor said. He said that Article 10 of the Federal Constitution guarantees freedom of association, including the right to join any political party. He also said that the anti-party hopping provisions in the Federal Constitution do not apply to Tengku Zafrul, who was appointed as a senator and subsequently made the investment, trade and industry minister. 'Let me be clear – I am neither opposing Umno's Supreme Council decision nor defending Tengku Zafrul's actions. 'Instead, Umno would do well to strengthen its MoU with other component parties in the unity coalition,' he said. Tengku Zafrul, whose Senate term ends in December, announced his decision to resign as an Umno member and to step down from all party posts on May 30. He also expressed his intention to join PKR.
