Overnight accident traps three miners in Northern B.C. mine

An overnight accident has trapped three miners underground in a Northern B.C. mine. According to Premier David Eby, the three miners were working in B.C.'s Red Chris copper and gold mine when the accident took place. Eby shared the news during closing remarks at the premier's gathering in Huntsville, Ont. 'We're facing a bit of a situation in British Columbia right now,' he began. At this time, the workers — two of which are from B.C. and one from Ontario — are believed to be uninjured and in a refuge area. 'The company is co-ordinating with the top mining rescue teams, including B.C.'s renowned experts, to ensure their safe return. 'The incident is deeply concerning for the miners' families, the mining community and all Canadians.' Eby is currently in Ontario for the summer meeting of Canada's premiers. The summit ends on Wednesday. More to come. sip@

North Vancouver traffic alert: Main Street on-ramp to Ironworkers bridge closed three nights

An on-ramp in North Vancouver from Main Street to Highway 1 at the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge will be closed for three nights this week for repaving. From Wednesday, July 23, to Friday, July 25, the eastbound on-ramp of Main Street is being resurfaced and crews will be on site from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning. A nearby section of Main Street eastbound will then be closed for repaving from Saturday, July 26, to Wednesday, July 29. Those closures, between Harbour Avenue and Mountain Highway, will be from 7 p.m. each evening until 5 a.m. the following morning. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. Drivers headed toward Highway 1 should use the Dollarton Highway on-ramp during the closures. Those travelling east on Main Street will be directed north onto Mountain Highway, then detoured to eastbound Keith Road. During the closures, travellers should expect delays. There is the potential for heavy traffic during busier hours and during planned events along Main Street near the construction zone. Drivers are encouraged to plan alternative routes or avoid the area if possible. The work is contingent on good weather, so drivers should check before heading out. jruttle@

Vancouver council to decide whether to ban sale of gun-shaped lighters in the city

Vancouver city staff are recommending council ban the sale of gun-shaped lighters in the city. On Wednesday, council will vote on the proposal from the city's chief licence inspector after the matter was raised in a motion from councillor Mike Klassen. A ban would come with a $1,000 fine for non compliance. Staff are also asking that a letter be sent to the provincial government calling for legislative amendments to make the ban provincewide. 'Staff recommend amending the licence bylaw to prohibit the retail sale of gun-shaped lighters as a measure to increase public safety and limit an increase in the number of devices in circulation,' the report to council states. 'Staff propose an amendment to the Ticket Offences bylaw to make the sale of GSLs a ticketable offence with a fine of $1,000. Staff also propose that the mayor, on behalf of council, write a letter to the provincial government requesting legislative amendments to prohibit the sale, distribution, and possession of GSLs in British Columbia, as well as consider legislative changes to empower law enforcement to seize these devices proactively and prevent their continued proliferation in communities across the province.' A gun-shaped lighter is defined as a hand-held device that produces a flame, resembles a firearm, and includes an igniter or trigger, barrel and stock. This includes torch style lighters that look like a firearm due to the shape of the barrel and/or handle. There were 162 police calls about the lighters last year, more than half of which were classified as 'priority weapons calls' — meaning they led to a response involving several officers armed with Tasers, less-lethal beanbag shotguns and Arwen riot guns. 'Serious incident' under investigation in Vancouver's Robson Square: VPD

Police are investigating a 'serious incident' on Sunday in the area of Robson Square. There were indications of a violent altercation at the scene late Sunday morning, but police are not yet confirming the nature of the investigation. 'I have only limited information to provide at this time about the incident at Robson Square,' said Vancouver police spokesman Sgt. Steve Addison in response to questions. 'It's a serious incident that is under investigation by our major crime section and we will have additional officers in the area throughout the day to collect evidence.' Addison said a more detailed update might be available later Sunday or early Monday, as well as more on an unrelated incident at Burrard Street and Cornwall Avenue in Kitsilano. Neither police investigation is related to Saturday night's Celebration of Light fireworks show. Addison said 'there were no major public safety incidents at the fireworks last night.' jruttle@
