The Next Casualty Of AI: The Lost Art Of Brainstorming

Latin American woman making a business presentation in a meeting at a creative office and pointing ... More to her team her business plan AI will not only kill jobs. It will kill critical functions, too. In 2024, I wrote about the first unintended consequence of AI: fundamental communication skills, the ones, when developed, become part of the foundation of great companies. In essence, AI is now doing what our new employees should be doing. Once the window for that has passed, it doesn't return. This, by the way, holds true for entry-level jobs in computer science like programming and coding; legal services like paralegals and assistants; and graphic arts like animation, preproduction, and post-production. Where has all the brainstorming gone? Serious enough, but so far, it's been about skills. Now, though, AI has shown it also kills - or at least has the power to kill – critical functions in the process. For instance, when was the last time you were part of a brainstorming session or long-term program? That question is rhetorical. We already know the answer. The reason for this is simple and obvious. Brainstorming is hard work (at least in the beginning) and AI is more than easy; brainstorming requires patience and AI is instant gratification; in brainstorming, the truth that there could always be more than one good answer is evident and in AI we tend to accept what shows up. There's an old saying – Never let a conclusion be where you got tired of thinking – and that just about sums it up. Bring back brainstorming – And Make It Succeed As it's been a while since you've brainstormed (don't BS me; yes, it has), here's a guide – and a most basic one – to help bring it all back home. Let this be where we start . The Five Commandments of Brainstorming 1. Make it cultural. It's not an event; it's an ingrained process to be done in frequent intervals. Sometimes a surprise brainstorming get together is highly productive. No one is a spectator – young and old, senior and junior, new or long-term, admin and executive. All in the same meeting. Diversity is a strength. Jack Welch used to say, 'Listen to the new guy.' 2. Brainstorming shoud be short. Short time spans – no more than 45 minutes – and small groups of people – 6-8, optimally. Let it get personal when necessary. Pizza lunches or bagel breakfasts are brainstorming hot houses. 3. No judgment. Ever. Encourage everyone's contribution. You never know where the next great idea will come from. There's no such thing as a bad idea, just ideas that may not work right now. Allow no negative reactions as ideas are generated. This is a time for dimension building. 4. Build on the ideas of others. This is a real source of power. Creativity doesn't exist in a vacuum. Whenever the word 'but' is used, replace it with 'and.' Watch the enormous effect of that change. 5. Do not discard any ideas. Ever. Record and post all ideas as they're offered. Reduce list to a small number of key ideas. This is where you find the diamonds. Refer to your archives from time to time. More diamonds. Brainstorming Sum and Substance We must not let brainstorming recede into the dust of history. If we do, then we're next.

Masu Spring 2026 Menswear Collection

What happens when a brand stages a fashion presentation not for the press and buyers but for its fans? On a sweaty June evening, Masu's Shinpei Goto did just that. The tiniest handful of editors were invited to the designer's spring presentation at a warehouse in Tokyo Bay, along with more than 300 Masu Boys, the nickname that the brand's fans—of all ages and genders—have adopted. These well-dressed fans, more than a few of them students from Bunka Fashion College (Goto's alma mater), were mostly clad in Masu staples—spiky popcorn tops, rhinestoned denim, distressed baseball caps—as they queued up excitedly in the balmy twilight. Inside the space lay the felled tree trunk of a 200-year-old Yamanashi cedar, which served as the runway. (Goto had asked a furniture-maker friend to source it for him; it will later be made into a table.) The idea was to show guests the inner workings of how Masu put this season's look book together, in the place it had been shot just hours earlier. The crowd, supping cans of beer and whiskey highballs, gathered around the timber runway as the crew dressed the models and called out directives like 'Walk a little faster!' or 'Next model, please!' over the speakers. It was a look-book shoot as a meta performance and Goto's way of bringing his fans into his world. 'Even if young people get to see fashion shows, they don't often get to know about the world behind it,' he said. His theme this season was 'in the raw,' a rebellion against the boring bog of algorithms and corporate priorities that fashion creatives are mired in. 'Everything these days has become about numbers, not about whether it's cool or not,' said Goto. 'I think that's really creepy and no fun.' His idea manifested in intentionally loose threads, frayed edges, and unfinished embroidery and in the labels that were sewn on both sides of striped shirts. 'I thought that it would be good if the person who wears it decides which way it goes,' he said. 'There is no right answer.' Beyond a rebellious flavor, Masu has a distinct note of anachronism. The designer can take menswear references from seemingly disparate eras—Ivy League or Victoriana—and mash them together into something fresh and convincing for the moment. This time he printed a photograph of the yellowing, tattered lining of an antique jacket onto sheer mesh fabric, which was itself layered over a T-shirt. He made fringed jodhpurs into baggy trousers and transformed MA1 bombers into faded gilets decorated with numerous buttons. Most innovative of all were jeans and hoodies held together with cable ties, which will be sold deconstructed with an instruction manual detailing how to assemble them. A bit like IKEA? 'Yeah, exactly!' Goto grinned. Midway through the presentation, the designer got up on the wooden runway, working the crowd like an emcee and handing out Masu items to the audience; their tickets had each been printed with a raffle prize number. The effect was of an authentic gathering of like-minded individuals with stars in their eyes, marveling at how the Masu magic happens. It was also a show of community that most brands would kill for.

Save The Best For Last In Your Presentation Narrative

Businesswoman giving a presentation in front of a bored distracted colleagues, EPS 8 vector ... More illustration getty McKinsey is a prestigious management consulting companies with a well-deserved sterling reputation for helping corporations deal with complex business problems. They also offer their clients advice on presentations, which is where they fall short, particularly with their recommendations for the composition of slide titles. 'Most McKinsey slides follow this simple but effective format: Action title: The title is written as a sentence that tells the viewer the conclusion of the slide,' explains PlusAI, a U.S. company offering to 'Supercharge your slides.' And Slideworks, a Danish-U.S. presentation design company started and run by former employees of McKinsey and other management consulting companies, recommends that 'the title of a slide should always be an 'action title' that articulates the key takeaway or 'so-what' of the slide.' Inexperienced boxers, in an effort to create momentum and force, wind up or rear back before throwing a punch. This is known as 'telegraphing.' The phrase, meaning a premature revelation of intentions, has taken on wider application in other sports and even in other contexts such as business, politics, and even writing. In all cases, the impact of the revelation is diffused or lost—an unwise strategy. Instead, as in boxing, the best advice is to withhold rather than signal intentions. This advice is also a perfect metaphor for the title of a slide. If a company called Acme Widget were to show a bar or a pie chart of their competitive landscape with their figures being the greatest, an action title would be 'Acme Widget Leads the Market.' If instead, the title were to be 'Acme Widget Competitive Landscape' with all the same information, the presenter could discuss the landscape, comparing and contrasting all the players and their offerings, and then conclude, 'Acme Widget's superior solution makes it the market leader' either verbally or as an animated text box—at the bottom of the slide. Furthermore, if the presentation were to be given to a customer, using the identical chart, the presenter could go beyond the conclusion to add, 'That's why the Acme Widget is the perfect solution for you.' And if the presentation were to be given to an investor, still with the identical chart, the presenter could go on to add, 'Acme Widget's superior performance makes it an attractive investment opportunity.' There are four important benefits of the above approach: Benefit One Logic: 'Action titles' jump to a conclusion before presenting the evidence. Only when the evidence is presented has the presenter earned to right to make a conclusion. Efficiency: No need to reinvent the wheel. Slides can be repurposed and used for diverse audiences, delegating the message to the presenter's narrative. Benefit Three Customization: Every audience has its unique requirements and benefits. One size does not fit all. Tailor every presentation to every audience. Benefit Four Focus: The presenter—and not the slide—delivers the message and provides the value. It can be no other way. 'Action titles' are actually quite passive. They assume that the audience will read the message and get the point on their own. Instead, the presenter actively leads the audience to a conclusion. That's called persuasion. To conclude, we turn to another metaphor: comedians save the punch line until the end of the joke.

SanDisk Extreme PRO 512GB Dual Drive Review: Fast, versatile USB-C & USB-A flash storage

In a world where cloud computing dominates the digital landscape, you might wonder if flash drives still have a place. After all, with the ability to store, sync, and access files from virtually anywhere, the cloud seems like the obvious choice. But flash drives—those small, unassuming devices—continue to prove their worth in ways that cloud storage can't always match. Picture this: you're preparing for a presentation in a location with spotty or no internet access. Your slides, videos, and documents are all stored safely on a flash drive in your pocket. No need to worry about Wi-Fi passwords or cloud syncing delays—your files are ready the moment you plug in. Speed is another area where flash drives shine. Transferring large files like HD videos or software packages can be painfully slow over the cloud, especially on a weak connection. But with a modern USB 3.2 or USB-C flash drive, those same files can move in seconds. It's fast, efficient, and doesn't depend on bandwidth. Then there's the matter of privacy. When you store something in the cloud, you're trusting a third party with your data. But a flash drive? That's yours alone. Many even come with built-in encryption, giving you full control over who sees what. Flash drives are also incredibly portable. They're small enough to fit on a keychain, yet powerful enough to carry entire libraries of documents, media, or software. And unlike cloud services, they don't come with monthly fees. Once you buy one, it's yours to use as much as you like. They're also perfect for quick, one-time transfers. Need to hand off a project to a colleague or share a video with a friend? A flash drive is often the fastest and simplest way to do it—no logins, no uploads, no waiting. So while the cloud offers convenience and scalability, flash drives continue to thrive in the spaces where speed, security, and simplicity matter most. SanDisk's Extreme PRO 512GB Dual Drive seeks to address this market. This is a high-speed, versatile flash drive designed for users who frequently transfer files between devices. With dual USB-C and USB-A connectors, it offers seamless compatibility across modern laptops, smartphones, and older desktops. Performance Equipped with USB 3.2 Gen 2 technology, this drive delivers read speeds up to 1,000MB/s and write speeds up to 900MB/s. While real-world speeds may vary, it remains one of the fastest flash drives available, making it ideal for large file transfers, 4K video storage, and quick backups. Design and build SanDisk has crafted a durable metal enclosure that enhances longevity and heat dissipation. The compact size (3.15 x 0.72 x 0.42 inches) and lightweight build (23g) make it portable and easy to carry. However, some users may find it slightly bulkier than standard flash drives. Compatibility and features This drive supports Windows 10+, macOS v12+, and various USB Type-A and Type-C devices. It also includes 128-bit AES encryption for secure file storage and integrates with the SanDisk app for automatic backups. Additionally, SanDisk provides a lifetime limited warranty. Pros Blazing-fast speeds (up to 1,000MB/s) Dual USB-C & USB-A connectors for broad compatibility Durable metal design 128-bit AES encryption for security Lifetime limited warranty Cons Real-world speeds may be lower than advertised Slightly bulkier than standard flash drives Premium price compared to basic USB drives Final verdict The SanDisk Extreme PRO 512GB Dual Drive is a powerful, high-speed flash drive that caters to professionals and tech enthusiasts. Its dual-interface design, fast performance, and durable build make it a worthy investment for those who need reliable portable storage. While it comes at a higher price point, its speed, security, and versatility justify the cost.
