At the halfway point of 2025 we're looking back at six of the most shocking court cases the News Shopper has covered this year. They include a paedophile Bromley teacher, a prison guard who had a relationship with an evil murderer and a puppy thief. Hayley Jones, 34, was a prison workshop officer at the high security prison in Thamesmead when CCTV footage caught her kissing, touching and playing with McSweeney – who was serving a life sentence for the brutal sexual assault and murder of 35-year-old Zara Aleena in Ilford. Footage also showed the pair leaving rooms which had no CCTV whilst adjusting their clothes. In a letter which was intercepted by guards, McSweeney told another prisoner that he had been 'f***ing the fat thing from the workshop' for 10 months. He also claimed she had been providing him with contraband such as a phone, 'man was living good' McSweeney wrote. Jones admitted kissing and touching took place between her and McSweeney but denies having sex with him or providing him with contraband. She was jailed for nine months. Read the full story here. Paedophile drama teacher Shaun Baker (Image: Met Police) A Bromley drama teacher who raped and sexually abused a pupil from the age of 12 was jailed. Shaun Baker was head of drama at Ravens Wood School in Keston when he groomed a student, made him engage in sexual activity, and raped him multiple times. Baker, now 50, committed the offences in the 2000s but he continued to teach until his arrest in 2021. A jury found Baker guilty of 14 offences including three rapes following a two-week trial at Croydon Crown Court. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison. Read the full story here. British bulldog puppy Spot was stolen from his owner by Francis Zeta (Image: Met Police/Newsquest) A man who stole a puppy in Orpington while threatening the owner 'stop me and I'll do you' finally admitted the crime five years on. On March 3, 2020, a man in his 30s was walking his weeks-old British bulldog puppy Spot when he noticed two men watching him from a white Mercedes. The dog walker ran away when the men got out of the car, one of them wielding something shiny which looked like a knife, but the men caught up and threatened him before driving off with Spot. Spot was later found wandering a street in Harlow, Essex, on his own and was returned to his owner relatively unharmed, albeit traumatised. Francis Zeta, 38, of Muir Road in Hackney, was arrested two later after being identified as the owner of the Mercedes, but he told police a man who looked just like him had taken his car and committed this dognapping. But in April, Zeta finally pleaded guilty to the robbery - the second man has never been identified. Zeta avoided prison due to his ill health. Read the full story. Shammah Nicholas (pictured) armed himself with two kitchen knives before carrying out a frenzied attack on shopkeepers at Burnt Ash Food and Wine Two Bromley shopkeepers were stabbed in a frenzied attack by a man angered that he was being watched to make sure he didn't steal. Shammah Nicholas' behaviour was described as 'depraved' by his own barrister. The court heard that 22-year-old Nicholas entered Burnt Ash Food and Wine with his sister at around 3.30pm on September 11, 2023. He took exception to that fact that two shopkeepers – men aged 49 and 55 – were observing them to ensure they didn't steal. After a violent confrontation instigated by Nicholas, he left the shop then returned minutes later armed with two large knives. CCTV played in court showed a shirtless Nicholas re-entering the shop just minutes after he left. He chased the shopkeepers around the off-licence in a frenzy, stabbing each of them multiple times before leaving. One shopkeeper was stabbed in the shoulder and still had the knife lodged in him when police arrived. The other was stabbed once in the arm and multiple times in the abdomen area - he said he thought he was going to die as blood was pouring out of him. 'I've lived in England for nearly 40 years and never experienced anything like this,' he said. Read the full story here. Carol Cue, 75, stole £21,000 of jewellery from one of her closest friends, including a ring which had belonged to her friend's dead brother (Image: Met Police) An Eltham pensioner stole £21,000 worth of precious jewellery from one of her closest friends and pawned it to fund a holiday. Elaine Peat, from Welling, had been friends with Carol Cue for over 50 years and said she treated her 'like a sister'. Elaine said she felt 'numb' when she discovered that Cue had been stealing priceless keepsakes from her jewellery box including a ring which had belonged to her dead brother. Cue then revealed she had pawned many of the items and had spent the money whilst staying at Elaine's holiday home in France. Cue, 75, pleaded guilty to theft and narrowly avoided being sent to prison by a judge who described her actions as 'mean and despicable'. Read the full story here. Fatih Hassan (Image: Met Police) A thug was jailed for repeatedly stabbing a dad in front of his eight-month-old baby at the Chislehurst War Memorial. Mekseb Eyobraya had arranged to meet his ex-partner at the memorial at 3pm on June 8 last year to pick up the baby. But her new man, Fatih Hassan, also turned up carrying a knife which he used to stab Mekseb in the thigh and back. There was no animosity between any of the parties prior to this meeting and lawyers were at a loss to explain what provoked Hassan to carry out the near-fatal attack. Hassan, 31, of Avalon Road in Orpington, was jailed for 14 years.

Lucy Letby's life behind bars revealed – from £33-a-week to spend on chocolate & TWICE as many visits as other prisoners
LUCY Letby's enhanced prisoner status gives her a staggering £33 a week to spend on sweets and chocolate. The former nurse can also receive twice as many visits as other prisoners, after being fast-tracked from standard status. 5 5 5 Letby was convicted of killing seven babies and for attempting to murder another seven. She is now imprisoned in unit four of the only purpose-built private prison in the UK - HMP Bronzefield. Now an enhanced prisoner, Letby is given £33 a week to spend in the prison canteen where regular prisoners are only given £19.80. Some prisoners are bumped down to basic status as a punishment, which gives them only £5.50 per week. All prisoners are given status reviews every 28 days, but Letby has retained her enhanced position throughout her time at HMP Bronzefiled. A source told the MailOnline that the killer nurse was upgraded because of fears that she may be attacked by other inmates. The source said: ' Lucy is reserved and very quiet, she isn't really a problem with staff. 'It grates with officers though - she's committed the worst crimes possible and here she is on the enhanced unit with all the benefits that come with it. 'Again the real reason she is here is safety, she would be attacked on any other unit.' Letby reportedly has shared a cell with a former prison officer who was jailed after having sex with an inmate. Abreu worked at the famous prison HMP Wandsworth in London. Letby has been in police custody since November 2020 and was handed a 'whole life order' in August 2023. The inmate is the fourth woman in British history to be given no hope for parole after committing her string of chilling murders. Letby has been found to have targeted 17 babies whilst at large between June 2015 and June 2016. Her first confirmed victim was a boy born in June 2015, who, despite being born prematurely, was described as being "stable". Letby came on shift at 7.30pm that same day and, by 8.26pm, the boy's condition was "deteriorating rapidly". He died twenty minutes later after air was deliberately injected into his bloodstream. That boy's twin sister became ill just 28 hours later after "purple blotches" broke out across her body - symptoms shared with her brother. Thankfully, that baby survived. 5 However, another two babies died under the nurse's care that same month - one of which ingested air and the other being killed when air was injected into her bloodstream. More babies - including one in on 4 August and another on October 23 - died from incidents involving air while at Letby's hospital. Finally, Letby was found to have killed two more babies on June 23 and 24 2016. The killer nurse was arrested on July 3, 2018, and faced a three-year court battle before finally being jailed for life. She had been working at the Countess of Chester Hospital while at large. Despite her conviction, Letby insists that she is innocent and several high profile politicians have called for her case to be re-examined. Former health secretary Jeremy Hunt said that, although the victim's family must be at the 'forefront' of politician's minds, there is 'doubt on what actually happened'. He added: 'They are not conspiracy theories dredged up from far-flung reaches of the internet.' The former health secretary and Tory chancellor said that 14 paediatric specialists ruled that the deaths of the babies had been down to natural causes.

Buckinghamshire prison officer smuggled drugs even after arrest
A prison officer who continued to smuggle drugs into jail even after she had been arrested is now behind bars Kemp, 32, was sentenced at Aylesbury Crown Court to eight and a half years in from Torre Close, Bletchley, had worked with two men to smuggle drugs into HMP Spring Hill, HMP Woodhill and HMP pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office and conspiring to convey a prohibited article into a prison. Haydon Flavel, 27, and Omar Windross, 26, also pleaded guilty to conspiring to smuggle drugs into Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCU) said the crimes were carried out between September 2018 and June a prison officer at HMP Aylesbury, worked with inmate Windross to arrange the delivery of drugs and other contraband into HMP being arrested in July 2021, Kemp denied the offence and was released – and carried out offences for another year. Kemp also instructed Flavell to carry out "throw-overs" at Buckinghamshire prisons Woodhill and Spring Hill, as well as at HMP Erlestoke in ROCU said she would drive Flavell to those locations in her received "substantial payments" into her account from people with links to prison, with one person paying her £11, three pleaded guilty in February this of North Ninth Street, Milton Keynes, was sentenced to four years and six months in prison while Windross, of no fixed abode, was jailed for three years. 'Total disregard' Det Ch Supt Steve Boniface said Kemp "had a total disregard for the law". He added: "She was organising drugs and contraband to be thrown into prisons for financial gain and, despite being arrested and released, continued to engage in the same activity."Her conduct has betrayed public confidence and hindered [the Prison Service's] efforts to rehabilitate offenders, all whilst she was employed as a serving prison officer."I hope this sentence demonstrates that no-one is exempt from the law, and that anyone attempting to organise the supply of drugs into HMP establishments will be identified and prosecuted." A LOVESTRUCK prison officer had phone sex with an inmate then bombarded his mum with 900 messages to keep the fling going. Megann Gibson embarked on an illicit relationship with the lag while working at HM Prison Wealstun in West Yorkshire. The 26-year-old allowed the unnamed prisoner into restricted areas of the category C jail and visited him at his resettlement accommodation. Gibson also sent his mum more than 900 messages in an apparent bid to keep in touch with the inmate. The rookie officer is now facing jail after pleading guilty to misconduct in a public office. Gibson, who also admitted possession of cannabis, will be sentenced in August. The judge warned her: "You may well be serving a prison sentence." The charge states that she engaged in an "inappropriate relationship" with the serving prisoner. This includes having "sexual communications via telephone". Wealstun houses around 900 prisoners and offers training courses to help with rehabilitation. Gibson is the latest prison officer to become romantically entangled with an inmate. Last month, Morgan Farr Varney was locked up after she was caught sneaking into a cupboard with an inmate she fell in love with. Katie Evans, 26, was jailed earlier this year after performing a sex act with a convicted burglar and referring to herself as his "queen". While in February, Toni Cole admitted sending more than 4,000 sexual messages to an inmate. 2

A LAG who stabbed a prison officer using a flick-knife smuggled in by drone is a white Muslim convert who once said it 'felt good to hurt someone'. Callom Taylor, 22 — jailed for a string of stabbings — is often heard shouting 'Allahu Akbar' on the prison wing and carries a prayer mat, sources say. 3 3 He carried out his latest attack just after 8.30am on Friday, stabbing a 25-year-old officer in the stomach. He had to be airlifted from maximum-security Long Lartin jail, near Evesham, Worcs, to hospital for emergency surgery. Two weeks before, the prisons watchdog warned of drones being used to smuggle weapons and drugs into Long Lartin, with the jail's surveillance tech branded obsolete. A source said: 'The drone drops here are out of control. They fly in phones, knives and drugs.' He became even more paranoid and obsessive, constantly going on about people disrespecting him. He carries a prayer mat around and calls out Allahu Akbar. A source Taylor, of Sheffield, has a long history of violence. He was locked up in 2022 for a string of attacks including a three-month 'campaign of violence' in which he stabbed four people and assaulted a fifth with nunchucks. He was given a 23-year extended sentence, with a minimum of 18 years in custody, avoiding a life term due to his age. The judge told him: 'You have escaped a life sentence by the narrowest of margins.' The court heard a psychiatric report revealing Taylor admitted experiencing powerful urges to hurt people for no reason. When asked directly, he 'admitted that, in a way, it felt good to hurt someone else'. Jenrick: Give officers guns PRISON officers should be armed with lethal weapons to combat Islamist gangs, Robert Jenrick claims. The Shadow Justice Secretary said specialist teams in maximum security jails must have access to guns in exceptional circumstances as well as Tasers and stun grenades. It follows a spate of attacks on officers and Islamist gangs controlling prison wings across the UK. Jenrick said: 'Islamist gangs and violent prisoners are out of control. It's a national security emergency.' A Ministry of Justice source said: 'We are building new prisons and take a zero-tolerance approach to violence and extremism inside.'
