Don Bacon, House GOP lawmaker critical of Trump's handling of Ukraine war, won't seek re-election: reports
Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) will not seek re-election in his swing district in 2026 and instead retire from the House of Representatives, according to multiple reports. Bacon, who has served five terms in the lower chamber representing Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District, is expected to make a formal announcement on Monday, Punchbowl News and the New York Times reported on Friday. Bacon's district went for Kamala Harris over President Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Getty Images The congressman's office and campaign would not confirm reports of his imminent retirement, but Bacon has shared several messages thanking him for his service on Capitol Hill on X. Bacon's district, which encompasses Nebraska's largest city, Omaha, went for former Vice President Kamala Harris over President Trump in the 2024 election. The district also voted for former President Joe Biden over Trump in the 2020 presidential contest. Bacon himself narrowly won re-election last year, defeating his Democratic opponent by less than 2 percentage points. His departure opens the door for Democrats to pick up a seat in the House, which is narrowly controlled by Republicans, after the 2026 midterm elections. Bacon, 61, has been an outspoken critic of Trump's approach to negotiations aimed at ending Russia's three-year-long war against Ukraine. Bacon has been critical of Trump's handling of the war in Ukraine. Ron Sachs/CNP / Earlier this year, he told The Post he felt Trump was taking 'a pro-Russian view' of the conflict and that the president has been 'a bit of an appeaser to Russia.' Bacon slammed Trump's 'moral ambiguity' last month after the president took aim at Russian President Vladimir Putin – calling him 'crazy' – for allowing a massive airstrike targeting Ukrainian civilians, but went on to criticize Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the same post. 'The first half of this message is perfect, the rest is dumb,' Bacon said at the time. 'Trump is attacking President Zelensky while Putin bombs Ukrainian cities and it is misguided.' 'Moral ambiguity while one nation invades another is hurting Trump's credibility. Putin is making a mockery of Trump, and Trump keeps attacking Zelensky.'

The scandalous case that sank the Aussie Cossack revealed
A senior priest of the Russian church in Australia can be revealed as a paedophile after a court suppression order concealed his name from the public as he faced trial. Meanwhile, a devout Kremlin propagandist has chalked up 920 days hiding in Sydney's Russian consulate after flagrantly breaching the same suppression order, having played a bizarre part in the priest's downfall. Alexis Rosentool is a senior figure in the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, a branch of the church that went into exile during the rise of the Soviet Union in 1920. Last week he was found guilty of four charges related to his abuse of three males, the Herald can reveal. Two male victims were indecently assaulted in the 1980s, and Rosentool had an 'unlawful sexual relationship' with a child victim two decades later. Details of the crime are sparse because Rosentool's name has been suppressed by the courts for years. The order suppressing his name only lifted as the priest was taken into custody to await sentencing. An unusual twist to the saga involves a Sydney-born, pro-Russian YouTuber who calls himself the 'Aussie Cossack', whose collaboration with police contributed to Rosentool's arrest. However, Simeon Boikov's involvement has also resulted in him spending time in jail before he eventually fled to the Russian consulate in Woollahra to avoid rearrest weeks after being released. Boikov, 35, rose to prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic by organising and speaking at anti-lockdown, anti-vaccine rallies in Sydney.

Europe's support for Ukraine flags after three years of war
Although European leaders have regularly reiterated their support for Kyiv against Moscow, that support now seems less resolute. Faced with a war at Europe's borders that has dragged on since February 2022, the rise of nationalist parties across Europe, numerous uncertainties tied to Donald Trump's return to the White House and increased attention on the situation in the Middle East, Ukraine is no longer the absolute priority. Still, the European Union's 27 member states can't ignore the conflict, as Vladimir Putin's expansionist aims could one day affect them as well. On Thursday, June 26, during a meeting in Brussels, European leaders want to signal their unwavering commitment to Kyiv. But for the third time since early March, they have to do so as 26, without the pro-Russian Hungary, making it a symbolic – but empty – gesture. This highlights Budapest's increasingly rigid stance, as Hungary has for three years driven a hard bargain in return for joining Europe's consensus on helping Ukraine. With a year to go before Hungary's elections, Prime Minister Viktor Orban is becoming tougher in negotiations, with some at the table fearing the consequences.
