Mexico's top court orders release of 43 missing Ayotzinapa students case file

Mexico's Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the attorney general's office to release a public version of its investigation file into the 2014 disappearance of 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers College, one of the country's worst human rights atrocities. The case has been marred by missteps and interference, with Mexico's former top prosecutor arrested in 2022 in relation to the case. The court ruling, prompted by a request from a private citizen, requires the file to be made available on the prosecutor's website with confidential data redacted. For more than a decade, the government has promised action in finding those responsible, with investigations publishing varying accounts of what happened to the students from the southern state of Guerrero. In 2022, investigators acknowledged that local, state and federal officials had played a role in covering up their disappearance. International probes have ruled they were likely kidnapped and killed by organized crime members in cahoots with police. The attorney general's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ruling. The Supreme Court did not specify a deadline for compliance.

French woman who burned grandfather alive handed five-year sentence

Warning: This article contains graphic information. Bourg-en-Bresse, France -- A French woman who burned her bedridden grandfather alive by setting his mattress on fire was given a five-year prison term on Wednesday, with four years suspended, after prosecutors appealed a previous sentence they deemed too lenient. In October 2024, a court handed Emilie G., 33, a five-year suspended sentence after she admitted to killing her grandfather, describing it as 'an act of love' to end his suffering. Prosecutors appealed the ruling, arguing she killed the 95-year-old as frustrations piled up in her personal life and requested a 15-year jail term -- the same sentence sought in the first trial. But the court stopped short on Wednesday, sentencing her this time to five years in prison, with four years suspended. The remaining year will be served under house arrest with an electronic tag rather than in prison. During the trial, prosecutor Eric Mazaud argued that killing her grandfather was 'not an act of love,' as she described it. 'When you love someone, you don't burn them,' he said at the court in the eastern town of Bourg-en-Bresse. The victim was found dead from severe burns and smoke inhalation in his bed in August 2020. His granddaughter expressed regret during the appeal hearings which opened on Monday but was unable to explain why she chose to burn him alive. 'He did not have a death worthy of his life... fire is atrocious, it is inhuman,' she said on Tuesday. During the first trial, Emilie G., who experts said suffered from depression, said she was overwhelmed by caring for her grandfather while raising her children and dealing with a faltering romantic relationship. On the day her partner revealed he had been unfaithful, she poured gasoline on her grandfather's mattress and threw a burning sheet of paper on the bed before fleeing the room. Prosecutor Romain Ducrocq during the first trial argued that Emilie G. killed her grandfather to 'exorcise her frustration and multiple failures.' But the defendant said that she acted to end her grandfather's suffering, someone she had cared for and viewed as a father figure. She insisted her grandfather asked her to kill him several times including in the month before his death after she found him lying in his own excrement. She said she did not tell other family members. The court said it acknowledged the man's 'weariness,' but concluded that at no point 'did he express an explicit request for active assistance in dying.' The presiding judge Raphael Vincent said he considered the 'extremely serious' acts to be 'in no way a reasoned act of euthanasia.' According to a psychiatric report, she was in a 'dissociative state' at the time, which was said to 'impair her judgment.'

German prosecutor seeks arrest on terror charges of a Syrian man who allegedly stabbed 4

BERLIN: Germany's top prosecutor on Wednesday submitted a new arrest warrant based on terrorism allegations for a Syrian man who stabbed and critically injured four men outside a restaurant in the western city of Bielefeld last month. The federal prosecutor's office said in a statement that the accused, who has only been identified as Mahmoud M. in line with German privacy rules, 'is urgently suspected of membership of a foreign terrorist organization, attempted murder and dangerous bodily harm.' Last month, the defendant attacked several people with a knife outside a restaurant in downtown Bielefeld in the early morning. Four men were seriously injured. Prosecutors allege that the suspect follows an Islamist-jihadist ideology. He joined the Daesh group in Syria in December 2014 at the latest in the city of Raqqa in Syria, they said. After entering Germany, prosecutors said the accused decided to kill as many randomly selected people in Germany as possible. He did so 'in the name of a global 'holy war' and on behalf of Islamic State,' they added. 'To this end, in the early morning of May 18, 2025, he stabbed guests with knives in front of a restaurant in Bielefeld, critically injuring four people,' the prosecutors said. The newly submitted arrest warrant replaces an arrest warrant issued by a Bielefeld local court on May 20, which had been obtained by the Bielefeld public prosecutor's office. M. was arrested on May 19, and has been in custody since then. On May 20, the federal prosecutor's office had taken over the investigation. Among other things, the federal prosecutor's office takes over terrorism-related cases from local prosecutors in Germany.
